Theefficiencyofthecombustionistheratioof theeffectivehorsepowerdevelopedbythe engineandavailableonitscrankshafttothe heatconsumedduringthesametime HeatConsumption=(Fuelconsumptionrate, Kg/sec)*(Heatingvalue,Kcal/Kg)

Dieselenginemodel
Modeldescribesthefuelconsumptionrateas afunctionofspeedandmechanicalpower outputoftheengine. Thedieselengineisusuallymodelledbya simplefirstordermodelrelatingthefuel consumptiontotheenginemechanicalpower. Transferfunctionofareciprocatingengine involvesasmallbutsignificanttimedelay associatedwiththemeantimebetweenfiring.
