What is ETOPS?

ETOPS, which stands for Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards, is a set of
regulations established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety
Agency (EASA) to ensure the safe operation of twin-engine aircraft on long-haul flights.

The purpose of ETOPS is to provide a framework for the safe operation of twin-engine aircraft on routes
that are more than 60 minutes flying time from an adequate airport. This allows airlines to operate twin-
engine aircraft on longer routes, such as transoceanic flights, without the need for additional engines or
costly and less efficient four-engine aircraft.

To be certified for ETOPS, an aircraft must meet strict performance and safety standards. The aircraft
must be able to fly on one engine for a specific amount of time, called the "ETOPS rating," which is
determined by the FAA or EASA. Additionally, the aircraft must be equipped with redundant systems
and be able to handle emergency situations, such as engine failure or loss of cabin pressure.

The airlines must also have a comprehensive ETOPS program in place, including detailed procedures for
flight planning, maintenance, and emergency response. Pilots and crew must be trained to handle
ETOPS situations and the airline must have a system in place for monitoring and reporting ETOPS
performance.

ETOPS has greatly expanded the capabilities of twin-engine aircraft and has allowed airlines to operate
more efficiently and cost-effectively on long-haul routes. It has also improved safety by allowing for
better emergency planning and response.

In recent years, ETOPS has been extended to allow for even longer distances, with some aircraft now
able to fly up to 180 minutes from an adequate airport. This has opened up new possibilities for airlines
and passengers, making it possible to fly nonstop on routes that were previously not possible with twin-
engine aircraft.

ETOPS is an important aspect of aviation safety and efficiency. It has allowed airlines to operate more
efficiently and has expanded the capabilities of twin-engine aircraft. The continuing development and
advancements in technology are also helping to make ETOPS even more safe and reliable in the future.
