Silicone Softener Thickener

What is Silicone softener thickener

 The silicone softener thickener is also called silicone softener thickener, which can
 improve the viscosity of the matter,
 and keep the system in a steady state of suspension or a state of opacification, or
 forming a gel.
And it also widely used in food, coating, adhesive, cosmetics, detergent, printing and dyeing, rubber, medicine and other fields.

Silicone softener thickener Classification

Thickener mostly belongs to hydrophilic polymer.
It’s divided into
 animals,
 plants,
 minerals,
 synthetic or
 semisynthetic according to the sources.
And it also can be simply divided into two categories:
1. natural and
2. synthetic.
Most natural products are made from plants and seaweeds containing viscous substances, Such as
 starch,
 pectin,
 gelatin,
 agar,
 algae
 fat,
 carrageenan,
 dextrin,
 Astragalus gum,
 polysaccharide derivatives etc.
Synthetics are
 methyl cellulose,
 carboxymethyl cellulose,
 polyanionic cellulose cellulose derivatives,
 starch derivatives, casein,
 sodium polyacrylate,
 poly ethylene oxide,
 polyvinyl pyrrolidone,
 polyvinyl alcohol,
 low molecular polyethylene wax,

1
 polyacrylamide.

There are many kinds of silicone softener thickener, except for considering the product's
 fluidity,
 transparency,
 consistency,
 gel and aerosols,

attention should also be paid to water-soluble compounds, which is used less but good thickening effect. And also the water
soluble compound is compatible with the principal component and does not produce phase separation, and stores no mildew or
segregation.

Silicone softener thickener applied in textile industry

In pigment printing, the pigment printing paste is made by thickening agent, water, adhesive and pigment printing.
The shear force is taken to sharply reduce the viscosity of the printing paste under the mechanical action of printing machine.
When the shear force disappears, the original high viscosity is restored and the fabric prints are clear. The viscosity changes along
with the shear force is mainly achieved by thickening agents. In the emulsion paint, thickening agent play a coordinating role in
the thickening, stability and rheological properties of emulsion paint .
In the process of emulsion polymerization, it is used to protect the colloid and improve the stability of the emulsion. In the
dispersing process of pigment and packing, it improves the viscosity of dispersing material. In the process of restoring and
transportation, it improves the stability and resistance to freezing and thawing of coating to prevent pigment and packing from
sinking. In the process of construction, it adjusts the the viscosity of emulsion paint and presents the good thixotropy and so on.

According to uses, thickener is divided into

1. aqueous thickener,
2. oil thickener,
3. acid thickener,
4. alkaline thickener.

TRANSPERENT THICKENER

Carbopol® (Carbomer)
By George Nikolopoulos, Regional Sales Manager

Admix has been mixing Carbopol, a polymer used as a thickener, suspending agent and stabilizer, for decades. Carbopol is utilized in a wide
variety of cosmetic and personal care products, pharmaceuticals and household cleaners. Most Carbopol polymers are high molecular weight
acrylic acid chains usually crosslinked, and are available as powders or liquids.

In the cosmetic industry, Carbopol is used as a thickener in lotions, creams and gels. It is also used to stabilize, suspend, and control the release
of pharmaceutical products. At low concentrations, suspensions flow easily with a slippery feel. At higher concentrations, high viscosity
varieties form gels that are pseudoplastic. At rest, the batch has a very high viscosity and resistance to flow. When shear force is applied by a
mixer or pump, the apparent high viscosity is reduced.

The typical powder is very light and fluffy, forming clouds of airborne dust if not handled carefully. It tends to float on water, requiring a good
vortex to wet out. Once wet, it swells quickly creating high viscosity. Different varieties produce varying viscosities, but most are used below

7
1% concentration. The crosslinked polymers are not actually water soluble, but swell into hydrated spheres that give the product its rheological
properties.

As with gums, Carbopol form fisheyes if not mixed correctly. The Rotosolver is a top entry high shear mixer that is widely used to disperse these
materials quickly, eliminating clumps without damaging the polymer with overshear.

What is Carbopol made of?

1 Polyacrylic acid (carbomer; carbopol) Carbomers (Fig. 7.51) are synthetic high-molecular-weight polyacrylic acids cross-linked with allyl
sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol and contain between 56 and 68% w/w carboxylic acid groups.
What is the pH of Carbopol solution?
Carbopol® polymers must be neutralized in order to achieve maximum viscosity. Once a neutralizer is added to the dispersion, thickening
gradually occurs. Maximum viscosity is typically achieved at a pH of 6.0 - 7.0. The viscosity of Carbopol® polymers will begin to decrease at a
pH of 9.0 and higher.

Carbopol®* is a water soluble polymer, used as an emulsifying, stabilising, suspending, thickening in many industries and is also used as gelling
agent in hand sanitizer gels and other products. Carbopol is available in several different grades, which are widely used in manufacture of
cosmetics and toiletries, including gels, creams and lotions, detergents, and air fresheners. The gelling effect is activated in two stages, firstly the
dispersion and hydration of the Carbopol, and secondly “neutralizing” the solution by the addition of chemicals which increase the pH.
Neutralizing agents include triethanolamine (TEA), sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.

Carbopol® Polymer Products
Since their creation as the first commercial carbomers over 50 years ago, Lubrizol’s Carbopol ® polymers have continued to be the highest quality
carbomers on the market. Utilized in pharmaceutical products as rheology modifiers, tablet binders, suspension stabilizers, extended release
polymers, mucoadhesive aids, and bioavailability enhancers, Carbopol polymers are well known for their versatility and ease of use as
pharmaceutical excipients. Products within the Carbopol polymer family are chemically similar in that they are all high molecular weight,
crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymers. However, these gel forming polymers differ by their chemical crosslinking and can be grouped into the
following categories.
 Carbopol homopolymers: acrylic acid crosslinked with allyl sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol
 Carbopol copolymers: acrylic acid and C10-C30 alkyl acrylate crosslinked with allyl pentaerythritol
 Carbopol interpolymers: carbomer homopolymer or copolymer that contains a block copolymer of polyethylene glycol and a
long chain alkyl acid ester

We have made numerous enhancements to the Carbopol polymer family over time to help address regulatory demands, increase product
robustness, and improve product handling, including, when mixing or processing Carbopol, ease of polymer dispersion to cut down on
processing time. As part of these enhancements, our polyacrylic acid polymers are synthesized to meet the highest standards of safety.
“Traditional” carbomers are synthesized in benzene, a substance that is increasingly restricted for use in pharmaceutical excipient applications.
Our “toxicologically preferred” carbomers are synthesized in either ethyl acetate or a cosolvent mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane, which
are the products we now recommend for all new drug development projects.

In addition to our traditional excipients, LLS Health has added newer innovations to the Carbopol family in recent years, such as:
 Carbopol Ultrez polymers provide self-wetting capabilities for polymer dispersion that does not require mixing, enabling greater
ease of use in formulating and processing.
 Carbopol 71G NF is the only granular carbomer available for direct compression formulations, providing increased versatility in
the manufacture of oral solid dose products
 Carbopol ETD 2020 NF is designed to provide increased electrolyte tolerance in drug formulations.
