The group of UK scholars included in this email would like to express our enthusiasm to make the
most of Mr Alfredo Villar and Mr. Yeffry Huaman’s stay in Europe, by bringing them for two weeks
to share their knowledge and experience with our students and colleagues in the UK. We have
been successful in collaborating to get funding from our institutions, and in organising a series of
activities so that we can produce conversations that are relevant to our teaching and research
interests.
We want our teaching to be informed by our research. Therefore, we would be thrilled to give our
students the opportunity to meet an art curator, researcher, writer, and art critic such as Mr. Villar
to talk about the wide range of popular culture expressions he works on in Peru. He brings with
him a poster exhibit on street art, a recently published book on popular music, and his vast
experience as researcher, writer, and editor of important publications that we work with.
Mr. Huaman belongs to a thriving community of urban artists that have recently transformed the
face of Latin American cities. Through posters or mural paintings, the aesthetics of their work
reflect influences from the diverse local cultures, and in the design and execution processes they
engage the local communities to reflect their feelings and interests, offering an opportunity to
have public debates about their struggles or interests. Mr Huaman will run creative workshops
with diverse groups of students creating invaluable experiences to better understand current
cultural phenomena in the region.
These are the research profiles of the scholars supporting this visit and organising events involving
Mr. Alfredo Villar and/or Mr. Yeffry Huaman with our students and colleagues. Our teaching and
research engage mainly with contemporary cultural production in Latin America. We study the
visual arts, literature, comic and graphic arts, music, linked to politics and social issues, such as
race, gender and intercultural relations.
Sincerely,
