Course Name Purposive Communication

Course Credits 3 Units
Course Description This course is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for various purposes (CMO 20, s. 2013). It is a three-unit course that develops students’
communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and
appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It prepares students with tools for critical evaluation of different texts and centers on the power of language
and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used
in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and their future careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audiovisual and/or web-based outputs
for various purposes (CHED Syllabus, p. 1).

1. knowledge about communication and its process, principles, and ethics;

2. understanding of the cultural and global issues that affect communication in multicultural settings;

4. ability to evaluate messages and images of different modes;
5. skill in communication and strategies using tools of technology; and
6. proficiency in communicating for work, academic, and various purposes.

Course Objectives Summative Assessment Task Details

Purposive Communication is a three-unit lecture course that aims
to enhance the students' communicative competence and deliver
cultural and intercultural awareness through the use of various
multimodal tasks that will present opportunities for effective
communication with multicultural audiences — locally or globally.
At the end of the course, the students
must:
(1) Take end-of-term exams
(Midterm Exam and Final Exam)
(2) Present a cumulative work
(a final project or a creative
portfolio)
By the end of each term (midterm and final term), an exam will be given by the instructor to
the students.
The detailed instructions for the final project shall be given by the instructor weeks before
its deadline, allowing students to complete such with ample time.
The instructor may also opt to ask for a portfolio — a form of assessment for this class. In
the portfolio, each student should compile all forms of in-class outputs, homework,
worksheets, readings, and other items in a clear book folder.

Policies Language of Instruction: The language of instruction is English. In the teaching and learning presentation, however, language samples may be in another language if it is
needed to exemplify an activity in this course.
Attendance: The university rule on a 54-hour attendance applies: 20% absence is considered failed or dropped, as the case may be.
There will be no make-up arrangements for oral presentations; hence, the instructor/professor lectures in the absence of the discussant.
Those who cannot come on the examination day are advised to take the test on the day prior to the schedule.
Homework, Written Reports and Reaction Papers: Course requirements must be turned in following the scheduled due dates. If a student cannot make it to class on time,
assessment items must be given to a classmate for submission. Failure to submit assessment items on time and without an adequate excuse (e.g. a doctor’s certificate) will
result in a reduced score for that assessment item.
Honor, Dress and Grooming Code: Students are always strictly prescribed to wear the uniform of the college with their IDs. Also, respect to administrators, faculty and staff of
the university as well as to classmates and other students shall be observed. Students are mandated to follow all school policies and regulations.
Deficiencies: Incomplete grades must be attended to within a year.
