Technical Description
Microscope Heating Stage 350
‘The heating stage model 250 fits all LEITZ microscope stands heving
1 round revolving object stage with verte
‘ck and pinion focusing
motion, consists of a cicular base with built-in heating coll and a
cooling chamber the specimen chamber and a get oF 3 thermometers.
The base
Incorporates centing arrangement enabling the stage and the
specimen to be moved horizontally while viewing the object. An
interchangeable glass plate closes the lower aperture of the stage
and prevents unwanted circulation of sr
The heating cil inside the base is surrounded by a cooling chamber
for 8 more rapid cooling of the stage after high-temperature work
‘The coaling chamber should be connected to the water mains or to
‘water basin positioned at a higher level. The outlet tube should also
bbe provided with a rubber tube extension to carry away hot steam.
‘When warking with earbon dioxide, temperature as low as —20°C
‘cen be obtained. A thermostat can be used to maintain 2 constant
temperatura a8 may be required for prolonged observations.
The specimen chamber
\ihlch accommodates the object slide and the thermometer Is detach-
able and can be replaced by other attachments as may be found
fdventageous by the user for more spezilized work. Such accesso-
ries should be made by the user since the work and ts requirements
ay vary widely. A quartz disc on slide closes the top opening of the
specimen chamber. This cover can also be removed when the stage is
hot by means of a key with insulated handle (see illustration above)
The object sides for the heating stage are $8x25mm In size and
1mm thick.
‘The set of thermometers:
includes 3 types for the Following temperature ranges (graduated in
centigrades)
20° to +1106
100° to +290°¢
220° to +350°C
The thermometer a¢ selected forthe work to be carried out is simply
inserted in lateral aperture of the specimen chamber. The thermo:
meters are specially made and dependable for use inthe horizontl
Electrical connection and operating speed
The heating stage Ie designed for 2 maximum electrical load of
35 amps at 30 volts tis connected to A. C. mains through 2 regult
ing transformer with bult-in ammeter for 110/220 vals
‘The speed with which the temperature Is raised in the neighbourhood
‘of melting points should be approximately 3° C per minute. The table
below should be followed to regulate the transformer for the tempe-
‘ature required
Toe parox) 4s 20243830Heating stage eyepiece
for simultaneous observation of specimen
and thermometer scale
‘A special eyepiece has been designed for use with the microscope
heating stage model 350 which enables the operator to read the ther:
rmometer scale inside the field of view of the microscope atthe side
of the image of the specimen so that melting or crystallization pro
‘cesses can be studied unintorruptedly and the temperature read
simultaneously at any tine its recording may be found necessary.
‘The thermometer scale Is shown in sections in the eyepiece; the area
required is adjusted and brought into the field of view by mesns of a
travelling prism arranged in tube with slot laterally fited tothe spe-
lal eyepiece. Thi visible scale range can be extended or reduced
by another prism. The scale itso is focused independently of the
‘microscopic image by a special control shown in the above illustra
Heating Stage Microscope
Fr routine examinations oF specimens under heating or cooling in
transmitted light at magnificstions up to approximately 200%,
Clally for melting point determinations, @ special heating microscope
stand has been designed. This comprises a heavy base with bull-in
lamp, an upright, a microscope body, @ heating stage eyepiece and a
polarizing equipment
The base
of the stand has a rotating fixture for the heating stoge. The lomp
socket fits the base atthe side and takes a low-voltage flament bulb
Bolts 0.6 amps which is used in conjunction with a builtin conden
ser lens for even illumination ofthe field of view.
The microscope body with heating stage eyepiece
can be vertically adjusted slong the upright but for entical focusing
ofthe microscope tube a rack and pinion with lateral control head is
provided. The tube is threaded to take standard microscope objec
tives (corrected for 170mm tube length). The tube head ie suitably
Incline (45°) for convenient observation
‘The temperature-reading eyepiece is ofthe same design as that
cribed on page 2 the enly diference being in that itis permanently
fixed to the microscope body.
‘The polarizing equipment
Comprises a fiter polarizer mounted on a slide in the bose where it
‘can be moved in and out of operation. The fter analyser is arranged
in a rotating mount in the microscope tube. Gypeum and mica com
pensators can be used in the usual way a slot being provided in the
lower end of the tube,
Photomicrographs
can be successfully taken and records kept ofthe examinations made
with the hesting microscope by the addition of a LEICA.ASmm camera
land a MIKAS micro camera attachment fiting on top ofthe tempers
luce reading eyepiece. The 10x standard eyepiece usually supplies
With the MIKAS attachment is not used in this instance. The spacial
design of the heating stage syepiece does not allow to fil the entire
24x36mm frame ofthe 35mm flm but the recordings wil be found to
be of excellent definition,
