LUT WILLIAMS There's no shortage of consequential games this week as the black college football season enters its second month of play. Let's start in the SIAC, where no one expected Stillman to be in the running for a spot in the conference's new championship game set for Nov. 12 in Atlanta. Only records against competion in the new veteam divisions will determine East and West SIAC champions. The Tigers, 3-1 under new head coach Teddy Keaton, are 2-0 in the West with wins over Kentucky State (31-29) and Tuskegee (13-9), teams

HOW THEY DID IT

BCSP No. 1 South Carolina State 69, Delaware State 0 MEAC leader South Carolina State (2-2, 2-0 MEAC) had its most impressive outing to date in rolling up 687 yards of offense while shutting out Delaware State (0-1, 2-2). DelState was held to 10 rushing yards on 29 carries and 74 passing yards with three interceptions. BCSP No. 2 Bethune-Cookman 35, No. 7 Hampton 31 In a see-saw battle in Daytona Beach, a last-second touchdown by Hampton was overturned giving Bethune-Cookman a narrow win. Hampton QB David Legree hit wideout Isiah Thomas with a 12yard pass that was inititally ruled a touchdown as the clock expired. But using video review, the play was overturned by ofcials giving the win to the Wildcats (2-1, 1-1 MEAC). Legree (14-29-0, 225 yards) led the Pirates (2-2, 1-1 MEAC) back from an early 14-3 decit, throwing a 50-yard TD to Thomas before scoring on 3 and 37-yard runs that put the Pirates up 24-14 at the break. B-CU came back to retake the lead in the third quarter on two TD passes, Jackie Wilson to Eddie Poole from 6 yards out and Wilson to Rodney Scott covering 33 yards. Scott A 20-yard Jeremy Jermin interception for a TD put Hampton up 31-28 with 9:15 left before Poole caught a 13-yard TD pass with 2:50 remaining to set the stage for the ending. The Pirates drove 70 yards in 13 plays in the nal drive. Scott carried 15 times for 126 yards and Poole had 4 receptions for 33 yards and 2 scores for B-CU. Maurice Lewis ran for 115 yards on 5 carries including a 79-yard TD run. QB Kameron Smith ran for 55 yards in 5 carries with a 56-yard TD run and passed (13-1-1) for 113 yards and a score.

The big MEAC game this week is in Norfolk, Va. where Norfolk State (3-1, 1-0) hosts South Carolina State (2-2, 1-0) in a battle of teams yet to drop a conference game. Head coach Pete Adrian's Spartans also top the league in scoring defense (17.8 points per game), total defense (267.2 ypg.) and rushing defense (78.8 ypg.). S.C. Larry McNeil named interim JSU women's hoops coach

JACKSON, Miss. Jackson State has named Larry McNeil as its interim women's basketball coach for the 2011-12 season. McNeil, who had been an assistant coach with the Lady Tigers from 2001-2008, comes back to Jackson State following a season as an assistant coach at North Texas last season. While at Jackson State McNeil helped the Lady Tigers win the SWAC titles in 2002-03 and 03-04 with consecutive 23-win seasons. "I'm very excited to be back at Jackson State," said McNeil. "I have always said that Jackson State women's basketball is a sleeping giant and now it's time to awaken that giant. A successful season for me right now will be a 12-6 conference record, because the bonding period that has to occur will take approximately a month." Jackson State will begin a national search to name the full time head coach late in the spring of 2012.
