The Fox and the Sick Lion
An old lion realized one day that he was too tired to hunt for his prey anymore. Sadly he
went home to his den knowing that soon he would die. But before he lay down he stopped at the
entrance, breathing with great difficulty. Speaking in slow, low voice he told the world of his sad
condition.
The news of the lion’s illness soon spread throughout the forest and caused mush concern
among the other beats. One by one they came to visit him and paid their respects. However, the
lion’s age had also made him wily, and as each animal entered his lair and came within reach,
they fell an easy prey to the lion, who soon grew fat.
One day early in the morning, the fox came. He was renowned for his cunning, and
approached the den carefully. Standing some distance away he inquired after the lion that looked
healthy and asked him if he was feeling better. “Ah, my dearest friend, ”said the lion ”Is it you? I
can hardly see you, you are so far away. Come closer, please and give me some words of
consolation for I have not long to live,”
The fox, meanwhile, had been looking closely at the ground in front of the lion’s den. At
last he looked up, and turning to go. He remarked: “Bless you, but excuse me if I do not stay, for,

Badang and the Singapore Stone

According to local Malay folklore, Badang began as a poor fisherman who plied his trade
at mouth of the Singapore River. One day he caught a genie in his fishing net, and in return of his
release, the genie granted Badang’s wish to be the strongest man alive.
Impressed with Badang’s enormous strength, the Rajah of Singapura appointed him as
the imperial warrior. Soon, other kingdoms heard of Badang’s fame and sent their warriors to
challenge him. The king of India, in particular, sent his kingdom’s strongest man Wadi Bijaya to
Singapura for a duel. In the last contest, Badang beat Wadi Bijaya by lifting a huge rock and
throwing it towards the Singapore River.
Ancient inscriptions were added to the rock, probably to commemorate Badang’s
achievements but centuries later in 1843, the British colonial government blasted it to pieces.
Known as the Singapore Stone, only a fragment remains, and is now kept in the Singapore
History Museum.
Why did Badang become a strong man alive?

The Sumatran Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) is a rare tiger subspecies that inhabits the
Indonesian island of Sumatra. It has been listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List
in 2008 as the population was estimated at 441 to 679 individuals, with no subpopulation larger
than 50 individuals and a declining trend.
Every tiger has stripes but stripes of The Sumatran Tiger is darker in fur colour and has
thicker stripes than another tiger. Lines of small dark specks between regular stripes may be
found on the back, flanks, and hind legs. The frequency of stripes is higher than in other
subspecies. The Sumatran Tiger is one of the smallest tiger subspecies. Males weigh 100 to 140
kg (220 to 310 lb) and measure 2.2 to 2.55 m (87 to 100 in) in length between the pegs with the
greatest length of skull of 295 to 335 mm (11.6 to 13.2 in). Females weigh 75 to 110 kg (165 to
243 lb) and measure 215 to 230 cm (85 to 91 in) in length between the pegs with the greatest
length of skull of 263 to 294 mm (10.4 to 11.6 in).
Analysis of DNA is consistent with the hypothesis that Sumatran Tigers became isolated
from other tiger populations after a rise in sea level that occurred at the Pleistocene to Holocene
border about 12,000–6,000 years ago. In agreement with this evolutionary history, the Sumatran
Tiger is genetically isolated from all living mainland tigers.
In 1978, the Sumatran Tiger population was estimated at 1,000 individuals, based on
responses to a questionnaire survey. In 1985, a total of 26 protected areas across Sumatra
containing approximately 800 tigers were identified. In 1992, it was estimated that 400–500
tigers lived in five national parks and two protected areas. At that time the largest population,
comprising 110-180 individuals, was reported from the GunungLeuser National Park. However,
a more recent study shows that the KerinciSeblat National Park in central Sumatra has the
highest population of tigers on the island, estimated to be at 165–190 individuals. The park also
was shown to have the highest tiger occupancy rate of the protected areas, with 83% of the park
showing signs of tigers.

Summer Rain
The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nic

f those endless days at the beach, laying on the sand and soaking in the bright and burning sun. A
nd then, summer comes, and it rains.
As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn’t fair.
We suffered through months of school and miserable weather for those scant ten weeks of freedo
m and balmy weather. Any day that I could not spend at the beach or playing ball with my friend
s seemed like a punishment for something I didn’t even do.
On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at
the rain like a Dickensian orphan. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My
father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since
he was technically at work. It was those days that I would resign myself to whatever was on telev

As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work ever

er so that they no longer seem like separate entities and instead feel like continuations of the sam
e long day. Everything seems monotonous and dull, and an ennui or listlessness kicks in. Such a
mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer a
nd the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I complain about how hot it is. And th

—admittedly one that is all too short—from the torture of 100° and humid days. Rainy days are s
till the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful—and consid

When I was seven years old, I was given a small wallet to keep my pocket money in. I felt
so happy and put it in my hip pocket.
One day, during the break time at school, I discovered that my wallet was missing. I
checked it but I could not find it. There was some money in the wallet and without it I could not
buy anything to eat. I was close to tears. It was not because of losing my precious wallet but
because I might get scolded by my parents. Anyhow I went hungry that day.
In the class I could not concentrate well to study at all. I kept thinking about how I lost my
wallet and what my parents would react. How was I going to explain the loss? I did not know
whether someone had taken it from my pocket or it had merely fallen out. I hoped that someone
would find and return it to me.
When I told my mother about my loss, she was angry. She told me that it would not have
happened if I had been careful. When my father came home, I got another anger. Then he told
me that there would not be any more wallets for me until I got older.
Luckily, I still got pocket money from my parents. I am glad to say that I never lost anything
again.
I had learned to be more careful. It is not pleasant to lose something and then get scolded for
losing it.
