Gising na kaibigan ko
Ganda ng buhay ay nasa sa 'yo
Ang oras daw ay ginto
Kinakalawang lang 'pag ginamit mo
Kailan ka pa magbabago
Kailan ka pa matututo
Ang lahat ng ilog sa dagat patungo
Buksan ang isipan at mararating mo
Kay ganda ng buhay sa mundo
Poem 1
The song entitled “Gising Na Kaibigan” and the poem written by Confucius
challenge us to find and reflect on the true meaning of life. It gives us an idea of how
to see the true beauty of life by seeking the truth, exercising the good, and improving
for the betterment of the nation. Overall, these pieces mostly revolve around the self
but have a vital impact on society, as a whole. It emphasizes that in order to achieve
the betterment of the world, people should start to change and improve individually,
then all shall follow. Moreover, it also enlightens people to embrace changes and
advancements in life and not be blinded by the immaterial. It opts for people to live
life to the fullest by accepting conditions and confronting challenges by overcoming
difficulties. These challenges and circumstances may be broken down into little steps
and individual acts. Thus, it highlights the essence and responsibility of every
individual that can be a great help in improving society.
2. What does the song/poem say or try to say about the following list below?
What meaning can it hold in relation to the list particularly in our experience of them
today?
The message of the group’s chosen song and the poem can be applied in
different aspects. It holds a powerful lesson that can be related to certain
circumstances encountered in individuals’ everyday lives.
Concerning God and Filipino spirituality, it conveys a perception that even
though God is there to guide us and give us the motivation to reach our objectives,
we must also do our part to achieve our goals. To elaborate, there are times that our
faith in God is tested. As certain circumstances and shortcomings led us to question
God, we often ask the questions of why’s and what ifs. However, sometimes, people
tend to disregard that our actions affect our destiny. In the Philippines, we often hear
elders say, “Nasa Diyos ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa”. This phrase reflects the song
as it emphasizes that we are the drivers of our future. God is only there to guide and
support us.
Moreover, there is a point in life when we are lost and desperately finding our
purpose and passion. Yet, some take forever to find their purpose in life. With this,
the group believes that self-improvement equates to self-reflection. Perhaps, we
should reflect on the things that need improvement, have a concrete path, and stop
holding ourselves back. In addition, to improve, we must reflect on our lives and
make them meaningful through our efforts. We should strive to improve ourselves
despite setbacks because it has also been a part of our journey throughout our
existence. Setting goals is essential in pushing ourselves for our overall well-being
throughout life. Each of us has different means at our disposal that motivate us
toward our ultimate goals. And we need to have a realistic plan and stay determined
to accomplish our higher purpose. To sum up, there may be a probability that having
a concrete path and solid goal may help to find one’s greater purpose in life.
In regards to other people, it is somehow related to the self. In life, we can not
ignore the fact that we sometimes have misunderstandings with others. However, we
must always know how to accept our mistakes and be accountable for our actions.
Also, speaking up and giving voice to different socio-economic issues as well as
being sensitive to the feelings, beliefs, and culture of others can improve and help for
the betterment of all where we could’ve lived in a peaceful and self-aware world.
Furthermore, as we observe our country today, the poem and song should be
in their hearts and minds. It can be observed that many of our fellow Filipinos are still
blinded and chose not to see what has been going on in our environment. They are
still tied by the system that worsens the condition of our country. For example, some
Filipinos still voted for a family of a political dynasty, incompetent leaders, and
corrupt politicians. They prefer to be disinformed and blinded by the promises and
wealth of those in power. Ironically, they voted for an inept leader while demanding
that the country improve. Thus, for the betterment of our country, we must start to
seek the truth and not be blinded by fake news. It begins with us, voting for
competent and righteous leaders who do not have a history of corruption— choose
the leader who will help and passionately serve the country and its citizens.
