Communication in the Workplace and it’s Culture, Language, and Purpose

• Identify the purpose content, and context in communication.


• Differentiate culture, silence, and language.
• Write a reflection on how communication works in the workplace

*Communication in the Workplace

• It has evolved throught time.


• Workplace can also be in the form of online meetings through, Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, etc.
• It is the conversation inside the Workplace, and it’s main goal is to create rapport and
relationship with other employees to aim ones company goal.

*Critical Elements that should be Considered in Building Effective Communication in the Workplace

• Culture in the organization


• Language
• Purpose

*Culture in the Organization

• Inherent to every individuals.


• People in the high and low context have different ways of viewing things apart from their
orientation .

Example:

Asian - Silence

= to demonstrate listening skills

Western – Silence

= perceive as lack interest


*Cultural Silence

• Reflective of an individual’s culture

Example:

Japanese and Koreans – Silence

= Superiority

= Observed to listen first before they talk

= They are obviously quiet.

= This does not mean that they have no idea or they have nothing to share.

*Silence or Silos on the Workplace

• As described by Kent(2020) it is the tendency of individuals to isolate themselves from the


organization as whole instead they tend to be exclusive to a particular department or a group of
people. This attitude stops the organization to move in unison because and attain synery
because the employees tent to compete rather than share.
• They prioritize individual goals instead of the company’s goals.
• Threat to effective communication.

PEOPLE IN THE WORKPLACE NEED TO INTERACT TO EACH OTHER AND IT IS WHAT BRINGS THEM
TOGETHER.

*Language

• This is important in communication.


• It defines the chain where the employees address communication.

Example:

Vertical structure - The president may issue a memorandum using “To” address “All”

Horizontal structure - “For” to demonstrate hierchy or command.

Two Organizational Set Up

Determines the behavior that employees sould exhibit and the language that they need to use.

Vertical structure

• Centralized organization where decisions flow from up to bottom


Horizontal Structure

• Decentralized structure where decision are made at various levels.

Purpose

The act of communication begins the purpose.

This is the reason for engaging in a communication

Example:

“Good Morning”

- The purpose is to get attention of anybody through greeting.

Content

• This is your goal communication


• You must identify the appropriate language in order to create impact.
• “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say
something”
• Careful choice of words is the key, The credibility in one’s communication is measured with the
right choice of words used for the right occasion which as we call it “Diction”

Context

• This is your Target Audience


• A responsible communicator can predict what the target audience expects in written or spoken
communication.

Channel

• You choose based on the purpose, content, and context.

• International Phonetic Alphabet Vowels


• Consonant
• Schwa
• Diphthongs production
• Articulation (points, places, and manner)

*Suprasegmental Skills

• Proper word stress


• Phrasing
• Jucture
• Blending
• Intonation
• Contours
• Final and non-final intonation

• The use of spoken language considers the ability of the speaker to deliver a compeling
introduction.
• The technique on how to sustain the interest of the Audience and the ability to establish rapport
and maintain relationship.
• A perfect timing and an effecting ending makes the speech more meaningful
• The goal of spoken communication is to engage in exchanges of information ideas within the
organization to perform effectively, the role of effective communication therfore is the key to
building organization.
