SEGMENT

RELATIONSHIPS IN

CIRCLES
Tangent-radius
Theorem
It states that if a line is tangent to a circle
at a point, then the line is perpendicular
to the radius that goes through that
point of tangency. It is also used to
derive equations related to circles and
tangents, such as the equation of motion
of a particle moving along a circular
path.

Tangent-secant
Theorem
It describes the relationship between a tangent
line and a secant line that intersect outside of a
circle. It tells us that the product of the length of
the external portion of the secant line and the
length of the entire secant line is equal to the
square of the length of the tangent line segment
that is drawn from the same point of intersection.

Segments formed by
Intersecting chords
The rule that the product of both line
segments of one chord equals the
product of the two line segments of the
opposite chord can be used for
determining the measures of line
segments that result from intersecting
chords.

Angles formed by
Intersecting chords
The angle between the chords is one of
the angles created by meeting chords. It
is the angle formed by the intersection
of the two chords inside the circle. The
opposite angle is a different angle that is
created. It is generated by the two arc
segments that are severed by the chords
and is the angle opposite the angle
separating the chords.
