By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES of familiar topics and some unfamiliar topics by answering 7 multiple choice questions.
2.4.1 Explain the main points of an idea or argument by stating 2 reasons either in favour/not in
favour of a statement.
What I’m looking for (WILF)
1. Pupils can answer 7 multiple choice questions.
SUCCESS CRITERIA
2. Pupils can state 2 reasons either in favour/not in favour of a statement.

ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils discuss as a class important listening tips (ex: read the questions before listening).
PRE-LESSON
2. A list is written on the board as a reminder.
3. Pupils get a list of questions from Part 4 of the Listening Paper from Sample Paper 2 and read the
questions first.
4. Pupils listen to a part of a radio interview with an author called Mickey Smith, who is talking about
becoming excellent at sport.
5. Pupils answer 7 multiple choice questions. (Main Skill)
6. Pupils listen to the same radio interview again.
7. Pupils compare their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
8. Pupils move on to a speaking activity. Pupils discuss in pairs about the positive things sports people
bring to society i.e. good role models, someone for young people to look up to and admire, they get
young people active, create national pride and unity, give money to charity, help make higher

awareness of certain charities etc.
9. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
10. The sentence ‘Sports people earn too much money.’ is written on the board.
11. Pupils are grouped into small groups. Half the members of the group are in favour of the statement
and giving at least 2 reasons, while the other half are against it, and also giving at least 2 reasons.
(Complementary Skill)
12. Pupils list the points of their argument before holding group debates.
Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Pupils are partnered with at least 1 more proficient pupil.
More proficient pupils: -
13. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by working in pairs to discuss all the main points made in
the debates both for and against the statement.
POST-LESSON
14. Pupils vote as a class to decide whether they think the statement is true or false. Ask: should some
sports pay more prize money than others? Why?/Why not?
