The heart pumps blood through the arteries, which carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. The arteries branch repeatedly, becoming smaller, and eventually connect to capillaries that allow for gas and nutrient exchange. The veins then collect deoxygenated blood from the capillaries and bring it back to the heart in a continuous circulatory system.
