B: Look at all those different kinds of ships in the harbor. Captain, could you tell us how to
classify them?
A: Well, ships can be classified in several ways. One is by hull material, whether they are made of
aluminium, steel, wood, concrete, and so on. Another is by propulsion, for example, steam, diesel
and sail. Ships can also be grouped by use; there are warships, fishing boats and merchant ships.
B: What colossal ships these are!
A: Yes, indeed. Usually, the size of ships is given in terms of length, beam, draft, and tonnage.
B: How do you measure each of these?
A: Length is measure by either overall or waterline length. Beam is the measurement across the
ship at the widest part. Draft is the vertical distance from keel to waterline that is the amount of
hull that would be under the water when the ship is loaded.
