Q1. (a) What is a Hooke’s joint? Where it is used? Derive an expression

for the ratio of angular velocities of the shafts of a Hooke’s joint. (5)
(b) In a Hooke’s joint, the angle between the two shafts is 15°. Find
the angles turned by the driving shaft when the velocity of the driven
shaft is maximum, minimum and equal to that of the driving shaft. Also
find when the driven shaft will have the maximum acceleration and iii. Gyroscopic effect as the bow dips. (5)
retardation. (5)

Q2. The following data relates to a horizontal reciprocating engine:

Mass of reciprocating parts= 80 kg
Crank length= 75 mm
Engine speed = 525 rpm
Mass of connecting rod = 70 kg
Length between centers = 400 mm
Distance of center of mass from big end center = 150 mm
Radius of gyration of connecting rod about an axis through center of
mass= 125 mm
Find the magnitude and the direction of the inertia torque on the
crankshaft when the crank has turned 40° from the inner dead center.
Solve using the method of Klein’s Construction. (10)

Q3. The stroke of each piston of a 6-cylinder 2stroke in-line engine is

300 mm. The connecting rod is 750 mm long. The cylinder center-lines
are spaced 400 mm apart. The cranks are at 45° apart and the firing order
is 132546. The reciprocating mass per cylinder is 125 kg and the rotating
parts are 40 kg per crank. Using the graphical method, find the out-of Figure 1
balance forces and couples about the mid-plane if the engine rotates at
150 rpm. (10)

Q4. (a) An internal expanding shoe brake has a diameter of 300 mm and
a width of 25 mm. The cam forces are equal. Maximum pressure is not to
exceed 70 kN/m2. ϕ1=15°, ϕ2=120°, a=200 mm, c=115 mm and µ=0.30.
Find the actuating force and the brake torque. See Figure 1. (5)

(b) The rotor of a marine turbine has MOI = 700 kg.m2 and rotates at
2500 rpm clockwise when viewed from the aft. If the ship pitches with
SHM having a periodic time of 12 seconds and amplitude of 0.2 radians,
find the:
i. Max. angular velocity of rotor axis
ii. Max. value of gyroscopic couple
