b. gain knowledge to help other people understand the meaning of safety signs and;
c. draw an example of safety sign and briefly explain their uses.

III. Teaching Strategies:


A. Preparation
1. Review of the previous lesson.
Direction. Give at least 5 example of hand tools and equipment that we commonly
use on SMAW and briefly explain its uses.

2. Motivation
Ask the students what comes to their minds when they see the pictures and ask
them what will they do if they see one.
B. Presentation
What is the meaning of safety signs and symbol?
Safety symbols are pictures sometimes called safety pictographs, picto -
grams, or pictorials. They are used in place of, or as a supplement to writ -
ten words. These symbols provide warnings or alerts about a possible haz -
ard.
Signal Word
It is used in combination with a specific-coloured background and com -
bined with the safety alert symbol to indicate the degree of seriousness of
potential hazard. There are 3 choices of signal words an these are:
1. Danger: used to indicate an imminently hazard situation which, if not
avoided, it will result to death or serious injury. This use of this signal
word is extremely limited to the most extreme situations
2. Warning: this indicates a potentially hazardous situation which if not
avoided it could result to death or serious injury.
3. Caution: used to indicate a potentially hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, it may result in minor or moderate injury.
Classification of Safety Signs.
1. Regulatory sign: Signs contain instructions. Failure to comply with
them constitutes an offense under law, company policy, etc.
a. Mandatory signs are regulatory sign which indicate that an instruc -
tion must be carried out.
2. Prohibition signs: are regulatory signs which indicate that an action or
activity is not allow. The symbolic shape used on prohibition signs is
the red circle and slash over a black symbol.
3. Warning signs: Signs which warn of a hazard or hazardous condition that is
not likely to be life-threatening. The symbolic shape used on warning signs is
black triangle with yellow interior and black symbol.
4. Danger signs: signs which warn of a hazard or hazardous condition is
likely life-threatening. It is recommended that symbols not be used on
danger signs.
5. Fire sign: advice the location of fire alarms and firefighting equipment
6. Emergency information signs: indicate the location of, or direction to emer-
gency related facilities (exits, first aid, safety equipment, etc.)
7. General Information Signs: communicate information of a general nature in
order to avoid misunderstanding or confusion
C. Application
How will you apply your knowledge that you have learned in today’s
lesson in these given situations?
1. There is no safety sign in the welding area about not bringing any
beverages.
2. You notice that there is no danger sign in an extremely hazardous
area
3. You didn’t wear any safety goggles in welding area because there
are no signs
4. A worker slipped because of a wet floor.
