WINGS - GENERAL
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1, General (Ref. Figure 1
Each wing is of an all metal cantilever construction and is
complete with flaps, aileron and detachable wing tip. Each wing
is attached to the fuselage at the rear spar, main spar upper
joint and a scarf joint, bolted to the fuselage sub spar. A
locating spigot_on the fuselage engages pick-up point on the
wing root Crib 36).
2. Description
A. General construction
Each wing is a box comprising front, main, rear and
auxiliary spars and 16 chordwise ribs. The whole structure
is enclosed in heavy gauge skin panels, reinforced by
spanwise stringers bonded to the skins.
The wing, with the exception of the landing gear bay, is
fully sealed to form an integral fuel tank
A leading edge, attached to the front spar, houses engine
controls, hydraulic lines, electrical wiring and landing
lamp.
A trailing edge attached to the rear spar forms a shroud for
the flaps and aileron. Aileron control rods and the trim
operating mechanism are mounted on the rear spar.
Each wing carries an engine and provides for installation
and stowage of the retractable main landing gear Leg. A door
is attached to the main landing gear leg which, when
retracted, encloses the outer portion of the Landing gear
bay. Fairings are attached to the undersurface of the wing
forward and rear of the wheel and tyre bay.
To improve wing stall characlerislics, vorlex generators are
fitted to the top surface of each wing, between the left and
right side fuselage fairings and engine nacelles

MAIN FRAME
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
General
The main frame is constructed from front, main, rear and
auxi
tiary spars and chordwise ribs located between the front and
rear spars. An integral tank is formed by the space between the
front and rear spars, excluding the area of the landing gear
bay.
Description
AL
Front spar
The front spar extends from the wing root to the wing tip
attachment, in two sections, jointed by riveted plates at
wing STN 133. Each section is formed from upper and Lower
boom angles split on STN 133, riveted to a web, and by
landing strips.
A fireshield assembly is mounted between wing STN 99 and STN
115 at the front spar. It forms an effective firescreen
between the power plant and wing tank area. The assembly
comprises plates, angles and seal strips, and is attached by
bolts, nuts and washers.
Four inspection panels in the fireshield assembly allow
inspection of the engine mounting brackets and front spar.
Main spar (Ref. Figure 1
The main spar is formed from two machined angle section
booms bolted to a web plate. The inboard detachable pancl in
the web plate provide access to the fuel boost pump canister
and delivery pipe. Top and bottom booms, bolted/riveted to
their respective skins, terminate outboard at top main spar
boom STN 187 and bottom main spar boom at STN 169. At the
inboard end of the spar the top boom provides attachment to
the fuselage al the shouldered pin.
The bottom fail-safe boom incorporates @ machined slab
section, bolted within a boom of angle section, to form a
scart joint inboard to fusetage frame STN 223. Z-section
stringers bonded to the skin panels are attached to the
outboard end of the top and bottom booms outboard and extend

to wing STN 295.
Rear spar
The rear spar extends from the wing root at the fuselage, to
the tip attachment, in two sections, with integral joint
plate/web riveted fo outer web at STN 156. The spar consists
of two machined angle boom members, attached to a web face
and with integral machined reinforcing plates/straps riveted
to the web between wing STN 107 and 125. The boom outer
angle member extends the length of the spar with a joint at
wing STN 151 and the inner angle running from the wing root
rib to wing STN 156. The spar web is stiffened by vertical
angles spaced throughout its length. Flap and aileron
shrouds are attached to the top boom angles and reinforced
honeycomb panel flap shroud is attached to the bottom boom.
The top flap shroud panel is attached to vertica
stiffeners.
Wing/fuselage attachment is provided by a double plate
fitting bolted to the spar and rib 36
Auxiliary spar (Ref. Figure 2)
The auxiliary spar, comprising booms from SIN 67 to 133 and
a web from STN 83 to 115, with joint pieces attaching the
top boom to stringers, torms part of the main Landing gear
bay. This structure, in conjunction with the rear spar,
forms a support for the main landing gear retraction jack,
pivot fittings and uplock assembly.
Ribs
Light alloy ribs are located between the front and rear
spars. Ribs 36, 83, 99 and 115 are machined. ALL other ribs
are fabricated, with ribs 51, 67, 133, 187, 205 and 24
attached to the top and bottom skins with integral skin
Chnea
Integral fuel tank (Ref. Figure 3
The wing area bonded by the front and rear spars, with the
exception of the area used for the landing gear, is sealed
on assembly to form a fuel tank.

AUXILIARY STRUCTURE
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1, General
The auxiliary structure consists of a leading edge, trailing
edge and wing tip. The leading edge houses the engine services
and electrical wiring and the wing tip houses the navigation/
strobe lamps and compass flux sensors. The trailing edge forms
the upper and lower shrouds for the flaps and ailerons.

LEADING EDGE
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1, Description (Ref. Figure 1) (Ref. Figure 2)
The leading edge extends in four detachable sections from
outboard of wing STN 36 to the wing tip rib, with divisions at
engine and landing lamp positions. From wing STN 120 to 307
provision is made for the installation of pneumatic de-icing
boots and within this section a detachable landing light fairing
panel serves as the leading edge. AL STN 36.3, 41.9, 122.6 and
135, drain holes drilled through the leading edge flange and
landing strip, prevent accumulation of water within the leading
edge.
At STN 92.82 and 121.9 "P" section fume seals are installed in
the leading edge on the forward face of the front spar between
rib 83 and 133, to prevent passage of fumes from the power plant
into the Leading edge.
A seal plate and former rib assembly is bolted to brackets
attached to the front spar and a fire resistant seal is attached
with adhesive to the flange of the former rib. A split fairlead
block assembly with cut-outs for pipes and electrical cables is
bolted to the seal plate assembly.
Potential fume-leak paths are sealed with thiokol sealant, but a
drain pipe at the bottom corner of the fume seal is clear and
free of sealant.

ACCESS DOORS AND PANELS
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1, Description (Ref. Figure 1) (Ref. Figure 2)
Eleven detachable panels provide access into the wing through
the bottom skin. Ten of the panels are identical and give entry
to fuel tank cells. The vent tank panel is similar but smaller.
ALL eleven panels are chemi-etched or machined and have bolts
and sealed anchor nuts.
ALL the panels are sealed with special packing seals to provide
@ bonded path for electrical discharges. Before an access pane
is installed, a band of bonding agent is coated inside the
access panel aperture to improve bonding for lightning strike
protection.
Five access panels provide entry from the landing gear
compartments to fuel tank cells. The panels are also sealed with
gaskets. The forward outboard panel carries mounting brackets
for two fire bottles. The forward inboard panel provides access
to the fuel pump canister and delivery pipe.
Panels between wing STN 36 and 115 have Labels with the wording:
DO NOT REMOVE THIS DOOR UNLESS AIRCRAFT IS JACKED AT WING ROOT
JACKING POINT.
A fuel filler cap is provided on the top skin between ribs 259

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1, General
The main landing gear legs are supported by a bridge forging in
each wheel well. The front face is bolted against the rear of
the wing auxiliary spar and its rear face against the front of
the wing rear spar.
The forging is allached lo Lhe underside of Lhe wing Lop surface
skin, inboard of the rear diaphragm at rib STN 115, by a support
angié bolted to the forging, This is secured to the skin with
Avdelock pins.
Journals are machined at the front and rear of the forging to
contain main leg trunnion bearings and to provide the hinge. A
bearing cap is bolted on to machined flats to retain each
bearing.
The front attachment bolts penetrate into the No. 3 fuel cell
through the auxiliary spar and are sealed to prevent fuel
