3. Photosynthesis is a process used by autotrophs to convert light energy, normally from the sun, into
chemical energy that can later be used for the metabolic activities.
The general chemical equation for photosynthesis is:
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water + light energy → sugar + oxygen
An experiment was conducted in which one bean plant was placed in a sunny window and the other was
placed in a dark room. Both plants were supplied with equal amounts of water. After one day, one leaf
from each plant was tested for the presence of sugar.
4. DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, is the basic life chemical. DNA is a double-stranded structure made of
four types of nitrogen bases, namely, adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). The base
sequence of a single strand corresponds to the sequence of the other strand. Adenine (A) always pairs
with thymine (T), and cytosine (C) always pairs with guanine (G).
If the base sequence of one strand is A-T-C-G-G-A-C-T. What is the base sequence of the opposite
strand?
A. G-C-A-T-T-G-C-T
B. T-A-G-C-C-T-G-A
C. A-T-C-G-T-C-A-G
D. C-G-A-T-T-C-A-G

Allele pairs of an organism are called genotypes. The expression of an allele pair of an organism is called
the phenotype.
Pea plants have spherical seeds (S) and dented seeds (s). A heterozygous pea plant (Ss) is crossed with a
homozygous recessive pea plant (ss).

2. FILL IN THE BLANK.(15 MARKS)
___________ is the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to
another.________ are DNA sequences that encode for proteins. A person with 2 alleles that are the same for a
particular gene is said to be ________, but if the alleles are different the person is said to be ______. A Human
gamete contains ____ chromosomes whereas a normal body cell has ____ chromosomes in it. The ____
chromosomes for a ___ are XX whereas that for a ___ are XY. A _______ ______ is a mathematical model used to
show all the possible combinations of alleles from each parent.
i. Dominant gene
ii. Genotype
iii. Gene expression
iv. Alleles
