IV Infusion or Drip:
IV infusion is a therapy in which a drip is used to deliver fluids to the veins. This is the
most common type of IV therapy.
Uses:-
Giving fluid to people who don’t drink properly.
To replace lost fluid from bleeding or diarrhea.
Treatment in advanced stage of dehydration.
Advantages:-
Allow higher concentration of nutrients and medication in body.
Patient's body get faster and effectively.Supplements are provided directly in
blood Stream.
100% bio availability.
Importance:
IV Bolus:-
IV Bolus is a rapid injection of medication. Syringe is inserted into your catheter
to quickly send a one time dose of drug into your bloodstream.
Uses:-
Allow a much faster delivery which quickly increase the concentration of
substance in the body.
Advantages:-
Easy to perform.
Rapid enhancement.
1
Infusion.
Extended enhancement time.
Easy to adjust dose.
IMPORTANCE OF IV BOLUS :-
Administering a medication intravenously eliminates the process of drug
absorption and breakdown by directly depositing it into the blood.
This results in the immediate elevation of serum levels and high concentration in
vital organs, such as the heart, brain, and kidneys.
Intravenous medications can deliver an immediate, fast-acting therapeutic effect,
which is important in emergent situations such as cardiac arrest or narcotic
overdose.
They are useful to manage pain and nausea by quickly achieving therapeutic
levels
they are more consistently and completely absorbed compared with medications
given by other routes of injection.
IV direct route provides a more accurate dose of medication because none is left
in the intravenous tubing.
They provide an alternative to the oral route for drugs that may not be absorbed
by the GI tract,
they are ideal for patients with GI dysfunction or malabsorption, and patients who
are NPO (nothing by mouth) or unconscious.
Minimal dilution is required for some medications, which is desirable for patient’s
own fluid restrictions
There is minimal or no discomfort for the patient in comparison to SC and IM
injections.
