SD39PSR-1 INSTALLATION

2.0 INSTALLATION

This section describes POWERAC installation considerations, quantity selection, AC power requirements,
and mechanical and electrical installation.

The installation must be in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all other applicable construction
and electrical codes

2.1 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS

Review the following installation considerations before beginning POWERAC installation.

2.1.1 EMC Directive Installation Considerations

Some installations of POWERACs may require adherence to the European Union’s Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) Directive. Refer to the “Declaration of Conformity” statement at the back of this
Instruction that lists the certificate number of the Technical Construction File issued to the
APACS+/QUADLOG POWERAC. Compliance with the Directive requires the following:

• APACS+ and QUADLOG systems must use enclosures having sufficient RF attenuation.
• AC power input conductors to the enclosure must be filtered.
• MODULBUS (M-BUS) cables that enter or exit the enclosure must be filtered.
• The “shield” of all shielded cables that exit the enclosure must be connected to the enclosure.

Consult the factory for additional information concerning EMC Directive installation and the availability of
enclosures and needed hardware.

2.1.2 General Considerations

1. To ensure that POWERAC remains operator safe, note the following:

CAUTION
If POWERAC is used in a manner not specified by Siemens, the protection
provided by POWERAC may be impaired.

2. POWERAC is to receive AC operating power as follows:

• It is highly recommended that POWERAC receive AC operating power via a P/N 16114-65 115
Vac Power Distribution Assembly (PDA). A 230 Vac version (P/N 16114-131) of the PDA is also
available. The PDA features a Lever Fuse Holder terminal block with a 30 A fuse to protect the
power source. When the lever is rotated, the fuse is rotated, disconnecting the fuse from both fuse
contacts. This permits POWERAC to be manually disconnected from the AC input line.

January 2002 2-1

INSTALLATION SD39PSR-1

Refer to the PDA Installation and Service Instruction (SD39PDA-1) to determine the number of
PDA’s required to suppport the total number of POWERACs used.

• If a PDA is not used, then POWERAC must receive AC operating power from a local circuit
breaker panel. The AC line providing power to POWERAC must contain:
- A 30 A or smaller fuse or circuit breaker
- A switch or circuit breaker to disconnect POWERAC from the line

3. Refer to section 2.2 to determine the number of POWERACS needed to meet the DC power requirements
for each MODULRAC/SIXRAC/Remote I/O Rack in the system. Typically, Model 39PSR4ANDN can
support four racks. Model 39PSR2ANCN can support two racks.

4. Redundant racks will need redundant POWERACs. Redundancy requires separate AC power input
sources.

Redundant POWERACs can be installed in redundant and non-redundant systems so

that the failure of a single POWERAC will not overload the remaining on-line
POWERAC(s).

5. Determine the number of cabinets needed to house the required number of POWERACs. Up to four
POWERACs can be mounted in a single MODULPAC 1000 enclosure. Refer to Figure 2-1 for
POWERAC mounting alternatives. Refer to the MODULPAC 2000 Instruction (SD39MODULPAC-2)
for POWERAC mounting information.

6. Calculate the total heat dissipated by the equipment and determine if cabinet cooling is required to
maintain specified operating temperature.

7. If the temperature exceeds that specified for POWERAC or any device installed, take steps to decrease
the temperature. For example, if POWERAC is sharing a cabinet with a MODULRAC or user-supplied
equipment, add a roof fan.

CAUTION

Exceeding the specified operating temperature limits can adversely affect

performance and may cause damage.

8. Install the following equipment:

• Cabinets containing equipment to be powered by POWERACs
• Cabinets containing POWERACs
• Power Distribution Assemblies and roof fans as needed
• Power input cable conduit from breaker box to MODULPACs
• Power input cables to the Power Distribution Assemblies

2.2 POWERAC SELECTION

A calculation is performed to select the needed quantity of POWERACS. It should be carefully performed to
ensure a reliable source of 24 Vdc to the involved APACS+ MODULRACs/SIXRACs/Remote I/O Racks..

Gather the following materials before proceeding.

• User documentation listing the type of module (e.g., HFM, ACM, CAM, CDM, CCM) occupying each
slot in the involved racks.

• An Installation and Service Instruction for each type of installed module. The module's Instruction
specifies its maximum steady state DC operating current. This is also available on a label on the module.

IMPORTANT

The calculation is based on POWERAC delivering a continuous DC output current

of a specified maximum value for a given ambient temperature. Refer section 6.0
for the output current and temperature specifications for the model POWERAC
being used.

1. Refer to user documentation and record the module types and quantities (e.g., CCM, 1; LIM, 1; CDM,
4; SAM, 4) installed in each rack to be powered by POWERAC.

2. Refer to the Specifications section of the Installation and Service Instruction for each module and record
its DC steady state current.

IMPORTANT

HART Fieldbus Modules (HFM) can have two values of DC input current:
• HFM supplying power to transmitters.
• HFM not supplying power to transmitters.
Refer to user documentation to determine transmitter power source.

3. Refer to Equation 1, below, to calculate the number of POWERACS needed to power the modules in the
involved racks. When more than one POWERAC is connected to a rack, each installed POWERAC will
supply a portion of the total current drawn by all the modules.

For example, if three racks draw 12A and two POWERACs are connected to all three racks, then each
POWERAC will contribute approximately 6A. If a third POWERAC is connected to each rack, then
each POWERAC will contribute approximately 4A.

As shown in Figure 4-1, the sharing of current between multiple POWERACs is accomplished by diode
"OR-ing" of a module's A, B, and C power buses.

be rounded up to the next whole number.
IP = Selected by the user. IP is the maximum continuous DC output current from the POWERAC for a
given ambient temperature. Refer to section 6.0 for the output current and temperature specifications
for the model POWERAC being used. It is recommended that an ambient temperature of 60EC
(140EF) be selected as being the most probable cabinet internal temperature.
IT = The total steady state DC current draw, in amperes, of the racks being powered by the POWERAC.
The maximum permitted current draw per rack is 12.0A.

This example indicates that one 39PSR4NDN alone is not sufficient to power all four MODULRACs; two
are required. In this case, each POWERAC would be connected to two MODULRACs. Alternatively, one
39PSR4NDN could be connected to three MODULRACs and one 39PSR2NCN connected to the fourth
MODULRAC.

If redundancy is needed, then three 39PSR4NDN POWERACs would be connected to the three (A, B, and C)
DC power buses of all four MOULRACs. The total system current of 21.47A would be shared by the three
POWERACs (7.15 each). Should a POWERAC fail, the remaining two POWERACs could safely supply the
required current (10.7A each).

2.4 ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

• Many industrial environments create severe operating conditions. The conditions at each PSR location
must be within the environmental specifications stated in section 6.0.

CAUTION
Exceeding the specified operating temperature and humidity limits may cause
damage. Air temperature should be checked periodically to ensure that this
specification is not being exceeded.

January 2002 2-5

INSTALLATION SD39PSR-1

• To maximize reliable performance, locate a POWERAC as far as possible from sources of interference,
such as high current electrical equipment, that radiate strong electromagnetic fields and switching
transients.

• Industrial environments often contain particulate, liquid, and gaseous contaminants. Particulate matter,
usually dust and dirt, is abrasive and can cause intermittent contact in connectors associated with
marshalled termination assemblies. Liquid and gaseous contaminants can have a deteriorating effect on
metal, rubber, plastics, and the contacts of cable connectors. Extended exposure to this environment may
result in equipment malfunction.

• To reduce contaminant related equipment malfunctions:

- Identify contaminants and implement methods to reduce their presence.
- When cleaning equipment and surrounding area, especially the floor, either vacuum away all dust and
dirt or use a dampened rag or mop.
- Clean or replace all air conditioning filters, room air filters, and equipment filters regularly.
- Inform personnel with access to APACS+ and QUADLOG hardware of the need for equipment
cleanliness.

2.5 EQUIPMENT DELIVERY AND HANDLING

The following subsections provide information of interest to shipping, receiving, and warehouse personnel.

2.5.1 Predelivery Inspection and Test

A POWERAC that will be installed by the user is inspected by the factory. If POWERAC is ordered factory-
installed in MODULPAC or another enclosure and is included in a factory integration program, POWERAC
is inspected and tested as part of the APACS+ or QUADLOG system to ensure proper operation.

2.5.2 Factory Shipment

POWERACs to be installed by the user are placed in protective material and packaged for shipment. User-
specified equipment and accessories are packaged separately.

If POWERAC is ordered factory-installed in a MODULPAC or another enclosure, the enclosure is bolted to a

pallet and wrapped for protection during shipment.

2.5.3 Receipt of Shipment

All cartons should be inspected at the time of their delivery for possible external damage. Any visible
damage should be immediately recorded on the carrier's copy of the delivery slip.

2-6 January 2002

SD39PSR-1 INSTALLATION

Each carton should be carefully unpacked and its contents checked against the enclosed packing list. At the
same time, each item should be inspected for hidden damage that may or may not have been accompanied by
exterior carton damage.

If it is found that some items have been damaged or are missing, notify Siemens immediately and provide full
details. In addition, damages must be reported to the carrier with a request for their on-site inspection of the
damaged item and its shipping carton.

2.5.4 Return of Shipment

Depending on your location, use one fo the following methods for returning your shipment.

2.5.4.1 Return of Shipment within North America

To return shipment, call the Repair Order Group at +215 646-7400, ext. 4RMA 4762, weekdays between
8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. eastern time to obtain an RMA number. Mark the RMA number prominently on the
outside of the return shipment.

When calling for an RMA number, provide the reason for the return. If returning equipment for repair,
failure information (e.g. error code, failure symptom, installation environment) will be requested. Supply a
purchase order number for repairs.

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be included with each item being returned that was stored or
used anywhere hazardous materials were present.

Package assembly in original shipping materials; otherwise, package it for safe shipment or contact the
factory for shipping recommendations. A module must be placed in a static shielding bag to protect if from
electrostatic discharge.

2.5.4.2 Return of Shipment Outside North America

Contact the appropriate Siemens subsidiary for return of shipment. When contacting, provide the reason for
the return and for repairs, supply a purchase order number. Also request equipment packaging and shipping
instructions.

2.5.5 Equipment Handling

No special handling procedures are required during POWERAC installation or removal. A spare power
supply should be stored in a protective bag.

January 2002 2-7

INSTALLATION SD39PSR-1

2.5.6 Equipment Storage

The environmental storage temperature and humidity parameters in section 6.0 must be met for storage of
POWERAC.

2.6 POWERAC MOUNTING

This section provides installation procedures for mounting POWERAC in MODULPAC or a user-supplied
cabinet with 19-inch mounting rails.

Refer to Figures 1-1 and 2-1 for the following mounting procedure.

1. Get four M5-12mm screws from the hardware kit (PN 16114-72) supplied with each POWERAC.

2. Identify one oval rail mounting hole near each corner of the POWERAC's mounting panel.

3. Refer to Figure 2-1 as a reference and proceed as follows:

1) Place POWERAC against the mounting rails. Secure the POWERAC to the cabinet's rails with the
mounting screws.

2) If a second POWERAC is to be installed, fit its top corners into the cutouts in the lower corners of the
upper POWERAC Panel. Secure the POWERAC to the rails.

3) Repeat step “2)” if additional POWERACs are to be mounted.

This completes the mechanical installation.

2.7.2 POWERAC AC Power Input Connection

A Power Distribution Assembly (PDA) is typically used to distribute AC power to POWERAC(s). A user-
fabricated three-conductor cable for AC power is used to connect a PDA to a POWERAC.

1. Determine the length of cable needed to connect the PDA to the AC Input Terminal Block (TB1) on the
POWERAC transition board. Cable wire size should be 14 AWG or larger for 39PSR4ANDN, or 14
AWG or larger for 39PSR2ANCN. Allow sufficient length for dressing and clamping the cable and for
conductor end preparation.

2. Cut cable to length, route cable from PDA to POWERAC, and strip conductor ends 0.43" (11 mm).

3. At the PDA, isolate the L1/N/G terminal blocks by removing the fuse from the Lever Fuse Holder.
On the POWERAC transition board, set the AC ON/OFF switch to the number "0" (OFF) position.

WARNING

Risk of electric shock. Remove AC power from all involved wires and terminals.

4. Refer to the PDA instruction (SD39PDA-1) and connect the cable to a PDA L1/N/G terminal block.

5. Remove the cover over the AC INPUT terminal block (TB1) on the POWERAC transition board. Refer
to Table 2-2 and connect the AC interconnect cable to TB1.

A POWERAC panel ground stud is provided for a #14 AWG (or larger) additional connection to the plant
safety ground bus. This connection is optional.

2.8 PLACING POWERAC IN SERVICE

Perform the following to place POWERAC in service:

1. As a safety precaution, perform the following checks at each POWERAC:

1) Note the POWERAC model number and part number on the nameplate label beneath the power
supply (see section 2.3). Consult user installation documents and confirm that the correct model
POWERAC has been installed.

2) Confirm that the AC power source connected to the PDA (to which the POWERAC is connected)
provides the correct AC voltage (see Table 2-3) for the installed model POWERAC.

TABLE 2-3 POWERAC AC Input Voltage

POWERAC MODEL NO. AC INPUT VOLTAGE

CAUTION

Applying other than the specified AC power to a POWERAC can seriously damage
the unit. See section 6.0 for detailed specifications.

2. Install the fuse in the PDA's Lever Fuse Holder that was previously removed. Rotate the Lever Fuse
Holder to engage the fuse to the AC source and restore power to the POWERAC transition board.

SD39PSR-1 MAINTENANCE

3.0 MAINTENANCE

POWERAC needs minimal maintenance. Some routine maintenance is recommended in the form of a visual
inspection and a possible cleaning.

3.1 TOOL AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

The following tools and equipment are necessary for servicing:

• Common electronic hand tools

• Digital Multimeter (DMM)
Voltmeter section:
- Accuracy +/-0.01% of reading
- Resolution 1.0 millivolt
- Input impedance 10 Megohms
• Vacuum with non-conductive attachments
• Literature listed in section 1.2

3.2 VISUAL INSPECTION

POWERAC should be subjected to a periodic visual inspection. The frequency of inspection will depend on
the severity of the operating environment.

The primary aim of the inspection is to reveal any excessive accumulation of dust, dirt, or other foreign
material adhering to POWERAC. Accumulation of dirt and dust prevents efficient heat dissipation and may
cause system failure and/or equipment breakdown. POWERAC installed in a cabinet complying with the
NEMA 12/IP65 specification need not be inspected for cleanliness. Refer to section 3.3 for cleaning
instructions.

Systems using the 4-mationTM configuration software, version 2.00 and later, can detect a POWERAC
failure. However, unless 4-mation is monitored on a daily basis for hardware failures, a daily status
inspection of a redundant pair of POWERACS is recommended. An illuminated green “DC POWER” LED
on the POWERAC transition board indicates the presence of 24 Vdc output from POWERAC.

3.3 CLEANING

Cleaning a power supply involves brushing or vacuuming the protective covers to restore cooling efficiency
that may have been degraded by accumulated dust.

Cleaning a POWERAC transition board involves brushing and vacuuming the input power terminal block,
AC voltage control switch, and all cables and connectors to remove accumulated dust and dirt harboring
chemical particulate that may accelerate terminal, switch, or connector contact corrosion.

January 2002 3-1

MAINTENANCE SD39PSR-1

3.4 TROUBLESHOOTING

Transition board fuses can be replaced, however, the transition board and power supply section of
POWERAC can not be repaired in the field. They should be replaced and returned to the factory for repair. A
failed power supply can be field replaced by an assembly consisting of a power supply mounted to an “L”
bracket. DC and AC harnesses are included. Refer to Table 5-3 for replacement part numbers. Refer to the
following sections for general POWERAC maintenance information and troubleshooting guidance.

| 3.4.1 Power Supply Protective Features

The following is a list of the protective features provided by the power supply section of each model power
supply:

• Over current: This power supply operates as a constant-voltage source. If the load current tries to exceed
110% of the 40/C rating, output voltage will begin to decrease toward zero, thereby limiting the current
delivered to the load (current limiting values for each model are: 39PSR4A = 28A, 39PSR2A = 14A). The
power supply can operate indefinitely with the output shorted. When the overload is removed, normal
operation resumes.

• Over voltage: The power supply will automatically shut down if operating conditions cause excessive
output voltage. After an overvoltage shut down has occurred, the input power must be interrupted for at
least 30 seconds (using the transition board's AC ON/OFF switch to interrupt AC power) to re-establish
the output. When the cause of the overvoltage shutdown has been removed, the shutdown circuit will reset
in less than 30 seconds after the removal of input power.

• Over temperature: The power supply will automatically shut down if operating conditions cause
excessive internal heating. After an overtemperature shut down has occurred, the input power must be
interrupted to re-establish the output. When the cause of the overtemperature shutdown has been removed,
the shutdown circuit will reset in less than 30 seconds after the removal of input power.

• Input under voltage: If the line input falls below 85 Vac, the output is inhibited. Output is re-established
when the line input exceeds 85 Vac

• Input over voltage: The input circuit configuration is automatically selected by internal circuitry for all
input voltage ranges. If an input voltage of greater than 165 VAC (or 215 VDC) is applied, the voltage
doubler configuration of the circuit is automatically locked out and will not be reconnected unless input
power is interrupted (reset time is less than 30 seconds).

3.4.2 AC and DC Voltage Access Points

The AC input voltage can be accessed for testing at terminal block TB1. The DC output voltage can be
accessed for testing at the V(+) and V(-) terminals on a power supply end panel. See Figures 1-1 and 1-2 for
the location of test points. See Figure 4-1 for the schematic of the transition board.

3.4.4 POWERAC Fault Detection

This section describes the symptoms that can indicate the failure of a non-redundant or redundant
POWERAC.

3.4.4.1 Failure of a Non-Redundant POWERAC

Detection of the failure can be rapid, because control and I/O modules critical to a process loose power. A
failure is detected by noting the following:

• All status LEDs are extinguished on all modules installed in MODULRACs or SIXRACs that are powered
by the failed POWERAC.
• The Green "DC POWER" LED on the transition board of the failed POWERAC is extinguished.
• User installed process alarms are triggered.

January 2002 3-3

MAINTENANCE SD39PSR-1

• 4-mation, version 2.00 and higher, APACS+ I/O modules will report the sudden absence of 24 Vdc from a
MODULRAC 24V A, B, or C power bus. A failure will be posted by 4-mation runningon a Rack-
Mounted Industrial Server (RIS) that is connected to the APACS+ or QUADLOG system.

3.4.4.2 Failure of a Redundant POWERAC

This failure is non-catastrophic to the system since the continuance of power to MODULRAC, SIXRAC, or
Remote I/O Rack is assured by the surviving POWERAC. A redundancy failure can be detected as follows:

4-mation, version 2.00 and higher - I/O modules will report the sudden absence of 24 Vdc from a
MODULRAC, SIXRAC, or Remote I/O rack’s 24V A, B, or C power bus. A failure will be posted in
4-mation on a RIS or personal computer (running 4-mation software) that is connected to the APACS+ or
QUADLOG system.

3.4.5 POWERAC Fault Analysis

Table 3-3 provides information for troubleshooting an extinguished LED on the POWERAC transition
board. Use a Digital Multimeter (DMM) to confirm a diagnosis based on Table 3-3 by testing for:

• AC voltage to the Power Distribution Assembly

• AC voltage to the POWERAC
• 24 Vdc at the power supply output terminals
• A blown fuse at the PDA or POWERAC transition board (F1-F4)

3.5 TRANSITION BOARD FUSE REPLACEMENT

It is assumed that the cause of the failed fuse has been identified and cleared.

3.5.1 Removal/Replacement Procedure

1. Remove AC power from the 24 Vdc power supply.

2. Identify the failed fuse (F1, F2, F3, or F4). Disconnect its associated DC power cable connector (P1, P2,
P3, or P4) from the transition board.

3. Carefully pry the failed fuse from its clip holder and insert a P/N 7447-206 replacement fuse (see section
5.0) in the clip holder. Fuse Mfg: [Buss #MDQ-10, 10A Slo Blo, 32V Cartridge 1/4” x 1-1/4” (32 mm x
6.3 mm].

4. Connect the previously disconnected backplane DC power cable to its transition board connector.

5. Apply AC power to the power supply.

3-4 January 2002

SD39PSR-1 MAINTENANCE

6. For non-redundant POWERAC, confirm that all modules in the rack associated with the connected
backplane DC power cable are operational. If they are not operational, refer to section 3.4 for
troubleshooting guidance.

7. For redundant POWERACs, set a DMM to DC Volts and connect it between the output of the replaced
fuse and the black wire (DC -) at connector P6, "24VDC FROM PWR SUPPLY". Use a needle-point
probe to penetrate to the wire. Confirm that 24 Vdc is present at the output of the fuse. If the voltage is
not present, refer to section 3.4 for troubleshooting guidance.

6. Refer to section 3.10 for instructions on returning the defective assembly to the factory for repair.

3.7.2 Replacement Procedure

1. Check that the part number on the label of the replacement power supply assembly agrees with that of the
removed assembly. As necessary, refer to Table 5-3 for replacement power supply part numbers and
section 6.0 for performance specifications.

CAUTION

Applying other than the specified AC power to a POWERAC can seriously damage
the unit. See section 6.0 for detailed specifications.

2. Install the replacement power supply assembly.

WARNING
Electrical shock hazard - Remove AC power from all involved connectors,
terminals, and wires.

1) Center the "L" bracket key-holes over the heads of the securing screws and move the assembly in and
against the POWERAC panel.

2) Carefully slide the assembly down and fully engage the bracket's smaller mounting holes with the
securing screws.

3) Firmly tighten the screws.

SD39PSR-1 MAINTENANCE

3. Connect the power supply's 3-wire AC harness to connector P5 on the transition board.

4. Connect the power supply's 2-wire DC harness to connector P6 labeled "24VDC FROM PWR SUPPLY"
on the transition board.

5. Restore AC operating power to the power supply. On the transition board, set the AC ON/OFF switch to
the "1" (On) position. Confirm the lighting of the transition board's green "DC POWER" LED indicating
a 24 Vdc output from the power supply.

6. If applicable, restore the process to operational status.

3.8 SPARE AND REPLACEMENT PARTS

One spare replacement power supply should be stocked for every 10 in service, and a supply of transition
board fuses (see section 5.0 for part number) should be available. A spare or replacement can be ordered
from one the addresses in the Warranty statement or through a local Siemens representative.

Part numbers for field replaceable assemblies and fuses are listed in section 5.0 and printed on most
assemblies.

When ordering, provide the part number and serial number from the assembly to be replaced or spared. A
purchase order number should also be included.

3.9 EQUIPMENT RETURN WITHIN NORTH AMERICA

If POWERAC needs to be returned for any reason, perform the following:

TO RETURN EQUIPMENT:

• Call the Repair Order Group at (215) 646-7400, ext 4RMA (4762) weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45
p.m. Eastern Time to obtain an RMA number. Mark the RMA number prominently on the outside of the
shipment.

• When calling for an RMA number, provide the reason for the return. If returning equipment for repair,
failure information (e.g., error code, failure symptom, installation environment) will be requested. Supply a

SD39PSR-1 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

4.0 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

As shown in Figure 4-1, POWERAC consists of a 24 Vdc power supply, a termination board, and various
cables. POWERAC supplies operating power to the backplane of a ten-slot MODULRAC, a six-slot
SIXRAC, or a four-slot Remote I/O Rack where it is distributed to the installed APACS+ or QUADLOG
modules.

AC power from a Power Distribution Assembly (PDA) is applied to TB1 on the termination board and routed
through an AC On/Off switch to connector P5. A short cable connects P5 to the power supply's AC input
terminals.

Another short cable connects the power supply's DC output to P6 on the termination board. The power
supply's 24 Vdc output is applied in parallel to fuses F1 to F4. The outputs of the fuses are applied to
connectors P1 to P4, each consisting of an upper removable connector and a lower PC board mounted socket.

A user-installed DC power cable is connected between one of the P1 - P4 connectors and a MODULRAC,
SIXRAC, or Remote I/O Rack backplane connector to carry 24 Vdc to the backplane. This arrangement
creates three separate DC buses (A BUS, B BUS, and C BUS) from which installed modules receive their
operating power.

Each DC Bus is tapped by a module through separate pins in the module's backplane connector (P1) and
applied to the anodes of A BUS, B BUS, and C BUS diodes located on a module's circuit card. The cathodes
of all three diodes are connected (diode OR'ing) to create a common power bus for the circuit card. When
redundant POWERACs are installed, diode OR'ing assures continued operating power in the event of a
POWERAC failure or removal.
