Maruti Suzuki is one oI India's leading automobile manuIacturers and the market
leader in the car segment, both in terms oI volume oI vehicles sold and revenue
earned. Until recently,18.28 oI the company was owned by the Indian
government, and 54.2 by Suzuki oI Japan. The Indian government held an initial
public oIIering oI 25 oI the company in June 2003. As oI May 10, 2007, Govt. oI
India sold its complete share to Indian Iinancial institutions. With this Govt. oI
India no longer has stake in Maruti Udyog.

Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) was established in February 1981, though the actual
production commenced in 1983 with the Maruti 800,based on the Suzuki Alto key
car which at the time was the only modern car available in India, its' only
competitors- the Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini were both around 25
years out oI date at that point. Through 2004, Maruti has produced over 5 Million
vehicles. Marutis are sold in India and various several other countries, depending
upon export orders. Cars similar to Marutis (but not manuIactured by Maruti
Udyog)are sold by Suzuki and manuIactured in Pakistan and other South Asian
countries. Its manuIacturing Iacilities are located at two Iacilities Gurgaon and
Manesar south oI New Delhi.Maruti`s Gurgaon Iacility has an installed capacity oI
350,000 units per annum.
The ManesarIacilities, launched in February 2007 comprise a vehicle assembly
plant with a capacity oI100,000 units per year and a Diesel Engine plant with an
annual capacity oI 100,000 engines andtransmissions. Manesar and Gurgaon
Iacilities have a combined capability to produce over700,000 units annually.
During 2007-08, Maruti Suzuki sold 764,842 cars, oI which 53,024 wereexported.
Maruti Suzuki oIIers 13 models, Maruti 800, Omni, Alto, Versa, Ritz, Gypsy, A
$tar, Wagon R, Zen Estilo, $ift, $ift Dzire, $, and Grand Vitara. $ift,
$ift dzire, A star and $ are mauIactured in Manesar, Grand Vitara is
imported Irom Japan as a completely built unit (CBU), remaining all models are
manuIactured in Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon Plant.

Diesel Engine Plant- $uzuki Poertrain India Limited
Suzuki Powertrain India Limited the diesel engine plant at Manesar is SMC's &
Maruti's Iirst andperhaps the only plant designed to produce world class diesel
engine and transmissions Ior cars.The plant is under a joint venture company,
called Suzuki Powertrain India Limited (SPIL) inwhich SMC holds 70 per cent
equity the rest is held by MSIL.This Iacility has an initial capacity to manuIacture
100,000 diesel engines a year. This will be scaled up to 300,000 engines/annum by
2010.
