Theme:竹秋千游戏 Bamboo Swing Game


There are many ancient Chinese paintings with swings in them. In China, there is a tradition of swinging during
the Cold Food Festival or Tomb Sweeping Festival.

There are swing games all over the world and there are different ways to build them.

Swing-like devices or games are also found in modern landscapes

Objectives of the competition:


Designing a Bamboo Swing Game for Children
❖ It can be played with one, two or more players.
❖ It can be a traditional swing or a "new swing" with the basic feature of being able to swing.
❖ Must meet safety requirements, be non-intense and not too dangerous (e.g., can't swing very high).

Create a scene playing on a bamboo swing


❖ Interactive.
❖ Inviting: Just watching it makes you want to play it.
❖ The scene is propagative and fun.

Designing the structure and mechanism of a bamboo swing


❖ Conforms to stress requirements and exhibits mechanical characteristics.
❖ Have a certain degree of solidity, able to withstand dynamic forces such as pushing, shaking, etc
❖ In addition to bamboo, you can use other materials such as hemp rope

❖ This design is non-stationary in use
❖ Must be tested through solid modelling or experiments.
❖ Buildable by a team of 6 people on site

The Site
The venue for the bamboo structure building competition is located in Nansha Bird Park, Guangzhou, China.
Located in the southern-most tip of Guangzhou, Nansha Wetland Park is a great place to escape the city and
embrace true nature

Competition Requirement
1. Design Requirements:
Designing a bamboo structure installation with a swing game.
2. 2. Sizes: Square Site dimensions: within 5 x 5 meters and up to 4.5 meters in height
Long Site (rectangular): within 3 x 8 m and up to 4.5 m in height
3. It's not that the size has to be so large, it's just within the range and can be constructed in a few days by
the team
4. Requirements for use:There are some "swings" with a rocking function for tourists to play, in line with
the scale of human use.
5. Material structure: the main structure is raw bamboo material, structural skin integration, combined with
the characteristics of bamboo, structure and construction with exploration innovation. Other materials can
be used as enclosure materials, however, need to consider the connection of the materials with bamboo.
Bamboo can be used as a whole bamboo of different sizes, bamboo pieces, bamboo gabions, etc., which
can be used imaginatively.
6. Experimental: advancing the design through certain material and structural experiments and documenting
the experimental and design process.
7. Line of sight: catering for multi-dimensional viewing, internal and external viewing and night effects.
8. Safety: meet the requirements of safety for people of all ages and good wind resistance.

Team Members
Team requirements: Total 6 members, including 1 or 2 lecturer and students (encourage cross-grades, cross-
faculty teams from the same school, and it is prohibited the cross-school/college teams) FAQ are on the last pages.
Any current full-time student (enrolled as of December 2023) studying architecture, landscape, engineering or
related design courses recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia and its staff (lecturer/supervisor)
are eligible. Those who their graduation ceremony is after the registration date (08/08/2023) are eligible.

Deliverables
1. Four (4) panel of A1 (vertical layout, top and bottom arrangement - refer sample below) in pdf format in a
single file < 50MB.
2. One (1) of the panel should include structure and shows design
experiment and process. Other two (2) boards should include design concept,
sketch, scene design etc.
3. Multimedia 3D video presentation (2~3 minutes, with English subtitles) avi
or mp4 format < 100MB.
4. One (1) panel of A1 showing photos of the 1:10 scale model in pdf format
< 10MB.

5. A custom thumbnail poster: Have a resolution of 1280x720 (with minimum


width of 640 pixels) in image formats such as JPG, PNG or JPEG (upload able
on Facebook). < 2MB. Only the ENTRY CODE (bottom right hand corner) and the structure name/title
to appear on the thumbnail (beside the best ‘killer’ perspective view) of the structure (refer sample below).

6. Project Introduction and description in 300 words or less. (A4 – Pdf format)

Anonymity and Confidentiality


No identifications mark of the submitting team shall appear on the boards and presentation video except the ENTRY
CODE. The code will be sent to participants upon their registration. The code should appear at the right-hand
corner of every boards and at the beginning of the presentation video. File named as ENTRY CODE-Project
Name-Type. Example: 2018-Blossoming_Motifs-Video

Scoring Rules
In the final competition, the individual awards will be selected according to these three criteria:
i) Innovation & Design: Conceptual Innovation and Design Integration 30%
ii) Structural & Construction: Structural Innovation and Structural Detailing 40%
iii) Design Process & Experiment; the process of advancing design trough experimentation 30%

Frequently Ask Question (FAQ)

i. Can a non-Malaysian student be part of the team?


Can. As long as they are a registered student in a Malaysian University/Institution.

ii. Can students study other than architecture be part of the team (engineering/landscaping etc)?
Can. No limitation on the enrolment course they are in.

iii. Can a Postgraduate (Masters or PhD), Diploma & Certificate student participate in the team?
Can. No limitation.

iv. Can students or lecturer/supervisors be participating in multiple teams.


Can. No limitation.

v. Can a team have submitted more than 1 submissions?


Can. No limit on the number of entries submitted by teams or University/Institutions.

vi. Can a team be less than 4 and without lecturer/supervisor?


No, and must include at least 1 lecturer/supervisor. Maximum 2 lecturers/supervisors. Can be full
time/part-time or contract staff.

vii. Can the design exceed the limitation of the design brief?
As per any design exercise, up to the creativity of the participants to interpret/reinterpret the brief. However,
all at their own risk and their own design conviction and discretion and up to the panel of juries to decide.

viii. Can the participants have submitted less than the specified submission requirement?
As per any design exercise, up to the participants to reinterpret the submission materials. However, all at
their own risk and their own design conviction and discretion and up to the panel of juries to decide.

ix. Can Community Colleges, Technical Schools, Matriculation and Foundation students participate?
Can. As long as the Institution is registered with Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education.

x. Can Alumni join as a member of the team.


No, must still be a student when registering as a participant. Unless if they are hired by the university as
a staff.

xi. Can they resubmit their work?


Can, as long as it’s before the closing date and time.

xii. Can they appeal the results?


No. Results is FINAL.

Intellectual Property Rights & Plagiarism


Intellectual Property Rights belong to the author(s), but upon submitting an entry, the participant declares, warrants, agrees and
undertakes that the submission (Intellectual Property Rights inclusive) would be used for promotion/ publication of the event and
future events. The organizer and its appointed agent are entitled to display or exhibit on any date and in any venue/platform the
entries or any part thereof, and publish including the design statement of the selected entries. Plagiarized work (including
copyrighted music and film) will be disqualified upon discovery. All reference must be credited and cited.
