Understanding this report

Children receive an overall grade (A to E) for their achievement in each learning area. In some learning
areas they may also receive a grade for the learning area components assessed.

In Year 1 and 2, schools have the option to report using achievement descriptors rather than letter
grades, for example 'Satisfactory achievement' rather than 'C'.

Grading scale
GRADE DESCRIPTION

The student demonstrates excellent achievement

A
of what is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates high achievement of

B
what is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates satisfactory

C
achievement of what is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates limited achievement of

D
what is expected for this year level.

The student demonstrates very low achievement

E
of what is expected for this year level.

The A – E grade scale summarises the standard of achievement associated with each learning area. The
scale describes the depth of knowledge, understandings and skills that children working at that
standard typically show.

If your child receives a 'C' grade, they are achieving at the required level for their year.

Maintaining a grade in a learning area from one semester to the next is an indication of positive
achievement and expected development.

A child who is on an Individual Education Plan will have progress reported against learning outcomes
outlined in the Individual Education Plan – not using A-E grades.

COMMENT

In Semester Two, Thea learnt about Prayer, Reconciliation, Baptism and Advent/Christmas. She
accurately retold the story of the Woman With the Bent Back. Thea gave examples of how Jesus taught
love, including helping the poor and loving everyone. She recalled the Bible story of how Jesus gathered
the Twelve Apostles and explained why it was a difficult choice for Jesus. Thea provided clear ways that
people can ask for forgiveness and how God always forgives; for example, saying sorry and making
friends again. She gave a detailed description of who is present for, what happens at and the purpose
of the Sacrament of Baptism. Thea understood that Baptism helps people become followers of Jesus
and join God’s family. She retold the story of Christmas with detail.

COMMENT

Thea effectively used knowledge of sounds, high-frequency words and punctuation to read texts, with
excellent fluency. She read words such as ‘wanted, everything and mountains’ by sight, and used an
expressive voice to reflect dialogue between characters. Thea confidently linked personal experiences
to ideas, characters and settings within texts. As a reading goal, I encourage her to further explore
different features of informative, imaginative and persuasive texts; for example, informative texts can
have headings to organise information.
Thea wrote short imaginative, persuasive and informative texts, and began to organise her ideas. She
provided detail with adjectives and verbs, and started to use more specific vocabulary. Thea spelt some
high-frequency words and words with regular spelling patterns; for example, ‘green, because, loud.’ I
encourage her to practise accurately using capital letters and full stops.
Thea spoke clearly, audibly and varied her tone of voice. She used positive body language, eye contact
and props to effectively support her oral presentations. Thea initiated discussions and actively
participated in learning by taking turns, listening attentively, and contributing to others’ ideas.

COMMENT

Thea fluently counted beyond 120 and recognised numbers into the thousands; for example, 1406,
5398 and 7231. She wrote numbers mostly correctly, with the numerals 7 and 9 sometimes reversed.
Thea used a variety of counting strategies to solve and represent simple addition and subtraction
problems. She recognised, described and ordered Australian coins, according to their value; for
example, explaining how many cents each dollar is worth. Thea used informal units to measure, order
and explain the length, mass and capacity of objects. She told time to the half hour and explained the
time using features of the clock. Thea followed directional language to move from place to place, and
directed others to familiar locations.

Science C
MRS NICOLE DRYSDALE OVERALL GRADE

In Earth and Space Science we investigated observable changes that occur in the sky and landscape, we
recognised seasonal as well as daily changes and explored natural, managed, and constructed
landscape changes. Throughout the Physical Science unit, we researched how light and sound are
produced by a range of sources and can be experienced through vibrations and waves.

GENERAL COMMENT
Thea was a confident and spirited learner. She had an impressive understanding about the world
around her and regularly asked questions to fuel her curiosity. Thea was a trustworthy friend to her
peers and displayed maturity when resolving minor friendship issues. She respected school property
and was well-organised when adapting to new routines. Thea enjoyed group work and equally
appreciated time to self-reflect and spend time reading quietly. She embraced her love for animals
when she enthusiastically authored and illustrated a book about Asian animals. Thea is a gifted
performer and enjoyed theatrical, writing and drawing activities. She also sang in the school Christmas
choir and read at school Masses. I am proud of you and your efforts, Thea, and I wish you all the best
for Year Two.
