Q.I (39 Marks)
1- Gradient of scalar function 𝑓 is written as

(a) A circular loop of radius R carrying a uniform total charge 𝑞.
i- What is the linear charge density 𝜆. (1 mark)

ii- Find the electric field at distance 𝑧 above the center of the loop.
(2 mark)

(b) a spherical shell of radius 𝑅 and carry a uniform surface charge


density 𝜎.
i- Use Gauss’s law to find the electric field inside and outside the
shell. (1.5 mark)

ii- Find the potential inside and outside the shell. (1.5 mark)

Q.III ( 12 Marks)
(a) Write down Laplace’s equation in cartesian coordinates. ( 2 marks)

(b) Laplacian operator in cartesian, spherical, and cylindrical coordinates, is given, respectively, as;

Find the general solution to Laplace’s equation in cartesian coordinates where V depends only on
x. Do the same for spherical coordinates assuming V depends only on r . ( 4 marks)

(c) As shown in the figure, prove that the solution to Laplace’s


equation in some volume 𝑣 is uniquely determined if V is
specified on the boundary surface 𝑆 (first uniqueness
theorem). ( 3 marks)

(d) electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges
(±𝑞) separated by a distance 𝑑. Find the approximate
potential at point 𝑟 far from the mid-point of the dipole.
( 3 marks)

Q. IV ( 7 Marks)
(a) Prove that magnetic force does no work on a particle. ( 2 marks)

(b) An infinitive long straight wire (𝑙 = ∞) and carrying a steady current i, as shown in the
figure. Find the magnetic field at point p a distance at s from the wire. Using;
i- Biot-Savart law. ( 2.5 marks)

Q. V ( 6 Marks)
A long solenoid of radius a, carrying n turns per unit length, is looped
by a wire of resistance R, as shown in the figure.
If the current in the solenoid is increasing at a constant rate
(𝑑𝐼/𝑑𝑡 = 𝑘), find the current which flows in the loop?
(use: the magnetic field in solenoid is 𝑩 = 𝝁𝟎 𝒏𝑰 ). (6 marks)
