Types of Revit Parameters

Parameters are used to show and control an element’s information and

properties. You can create custom parameters for each category/element in the
projects and sort schedules based on the parameter data. Within Revit, there are
Five types of parameters: project, global and shared.

SYSTEM PARAMETERS:
Built-in Parameters exist as default and cannot be modified (cannot change
name or category). They are normally pre-populated in the default template or
project. As they exist in all projects, they can be used instead of shared
parameters when agreed.

Project Parameters:
This tool is used to assign new parameters to any category of elements in
Revit. You can create a new project parameter as follows:

Manage > Settings > Project Parameters > Add

Project parameters have their own data set that can be customized; they can be
either type-specific or instance-specific parameter, a different discipline, group,
type and name, and added to a single category or multiple categories.
Family Parameters:
Family parameters only exist in the family (but can be visible in the project
loaded) and can be added to control variable values. They can be used to control
the values in the nested families.

Shared Parameters:
These parameters can be shared among multiple families, projects, and tags. They
require the use of a separate text file.
You can create a new shared parameter by going to Manage > Settings > Shared
Parameters

From there, you create a New Group with a name then you can create new
Parameters.
Shared parameters have a different set of customizable data (only two pieces of
data); You can name the parameter and change the discipline/type of parameter.

Global Parameters:
Like project parameters, global parameters are simple parameters that are
project-specific but not specific to the element’s category.
You can create a new global parameter by going to Manage > Settings > Global
Parameters > New Global Parameter

Global parameters have different properties than project parameters that can be
customized; they can be either type specific or instance specific parameter, a
different discipline, group, type, name, and added to a single category or multiple
categories.
The graph below explains the difference between all parameters:

Except System parameters all other parameters are user defined.

Be careful while inserting downloaded families from Internet. In this case there
are lot of parameters clashes are happened. That can be discussed with other
sessions.
