Definitions
Drug overdose deaths include events with an underlying cause of death code of X40–X44, X60–
X64, X85, or Y10–Y14. Drug overdose deaths involving an opioid also include a supplemental
cause of death code of T40.0–T40.4 or T40.6. Deaths involving fentanyl include events that also
have any supplemental cause of death code of T40.4 and a textual mention of fentanyl.
