Inspire My Play: Pizza Inserts

This resource is designed to be used with an Inspire My Play PlayTRAY.

Does your little one love to get involved in cooking? Or are they always asking to play shops? Expand their
experience with this pizzeria-style role play set, designed specifically to fit their Inspire My Play PlayTRAY.

How to Use:

1. Slot the pizza base into the base of the PlayTRAY.

2. Cut out the toppings and sort them into the segments - you could get your child to help you with this,
encouraging them to match shapes and pictures.

3. Laminate or back the badges on card and cut out. They should easily stick on clothing with a bit of sticky
tape or you could pop some ribbon on them (be mindful of young children wearing ribbon around their neck).

4. Cut out the order forms - leave loose or use a peg or similar to keep together at the top.

5. Play!

Prompts for Play:

Ask, ‘What can I get for you today sir/madam?’

‘Is everything okay with your meal?’

Model writing orders down - depending on your child’s age you can encourage making marks with
meaning, writing initial sounds or sounding out words. Don’t force, let them play with their writing.

Make the experience more sensory by using real dough and ingredients - your child might love simply
kneading the delicious smelling bread dough in their PlayTRAY!

Use herbs like oregano, rosemary and basil - your child could chop them up in the PlayTRAY or you
could have them in the segments for them to sprinkle over the pizza (some additional mark making
could be encouraged here).

Ask, ‘How many toppings can I have please?’ or ‘Please can you limit it to five pieces of pepper on
my pizza?’, encouraging counting and number play.

Try to use different describing words - delicious, superb, zingy, spicy, crunchy, succulent - to help
expand your child’s vocabulary.

You could include tongs and play scissors (like you might have in a toy doctor’s kit), knives or other
utensils in your role play. Tongs in particular would be great for picking out the toppings from the
segments and really strengthen fine motor skills.
