Short Story Lesson 3 Notes

Intro to All Summer in a Day:

 Start with whiteboard. Print the word ‘Summer’. Ask students to talk with a partner and
brainstorm a list of words that describe summer.
o Invite students to share on the board. Briefly discuss the images and feelings of summer.
 Explain to the students that the story we are going to read takes place on a planet where the
sun only shows once every 7 years.
o Ask students to close their eyes and visualize as I read the paragraph that describes the
rain. “It had been raining… live out their lives”
o Brainstorm the feelings and images that emerge from students
 Begin reading and stop at the following points: “their dreams were gone.”, “But Margot
remembered.” , “and her possible future.”
 Invite students to discuss their immediate reaction to the story. As a class, discuss the
characteristics of Margot and the feelings the story evoked.

Class Q – interventions must be safe, do-able, change the outcome. Often the person you’re
intervening for must also want your intervention. I’m reminded of an Office episode where Michael
drags Meredith, an alcoholic, to a rehabilitation center. This didn’t work because Meredith didn’t
want to heal.

When it comes down to being Christians and letting Jesus into our lives, it’s common sense right that
none of us should be making people feel bad about themselves. Just look at the kind of guy Jesus
was. A decent bloke. He never hated the people who didn’t believe he was the son of God. He never
rallied against the Romans. He simply preached love and because of that method now 2.5 billion
people follow the religion.

And I want to add since I never really knew this, but there is actual hard evidence to prove that Jesus
existed. I wish I’d seen this video years ago. I’d like to show everyone the first 10 minutes.
