CE4098D PROJECT: PART 1

TITLE: Investigate the effect of material properties on shear lag behaviour in T sections and other cross
sections through numerical simulations.

1. Introduction

Shear lag is the non-uniform distribution of stress that occurs in a tension member , in which all elements
of the cross section are not connected directly, It reduces the maximum tensile capacity of a section.
Studying shear lag behaviour in geometric sections is crucial for ensuring engineering designs' structural
integrity, efficiency, and safety. It allows engineers to make informed decisions about design
modifications, reinforcements, and materials, ultimately leading to more robust and reliable structures.

2. Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the project are to investigate the impact of shear lag using the finite element method
within Abaqus software and to find the unknown parameters which have significant effect in shear lag.
The study will encompass an examination of various steel sections, including T sections and other
profiles, in order to comprehend the implications of shear lag on their structural behaviour. A key aim is
to conduct a comparative analysis between the project's simulation outcomes and established industry
standards such as the American and Australian codes. By achieving these objectives, the project seeks
to enhance our understanding of shear lag effects, contributing to improved steel section design practices
aligned with recognized international standards.

3. Proposed Methodology

In our project, we will utilise Abaqus as the 3D modelling software to represent T-sections and other
structural members. This will be followed by an extensive finite element analysis aimed at examining the
implications of shear lag on these elements. By inputting accurate geometric and material parameters,
we will create reliable finite element models. These models will then undergo various loading scenarios,
allowing us to analyse stress distribution, deformation, and load-sharing behaviours. Ultimately, our
investigation seeks to uncover the specific effects of shear lag on the structural performance of these
components.
4. Expected Outcomes

Through the simulations, we will gain valuable insight into optimal design parameters and potential
solutions for mitigating shear lag and also analyse the effect of varying geometry on structural member
shear lag characteristics.

Our goal is to improve the design of T sections by simulating different loading conditions and analysing
their stress distribution. The analysis would reveal the stress distribution in different sections and the
magnitude of the shear lag effect.

The net section failure would be determined by comparing the failure with different standard codes, then
analysing the code that is closest to the actual failure.

From the results we provide adequate correction in the equation for shear lag, A comparison will be made
between these strategies and traditional methods like increasing the width of the flanges.
