BULIMIA NERVOSA

 the word bulimia derives from the Greek roots bous, meaning “ox” or “cow,” and limos, meaning “hunger.”
a cow chewing its cud.
 is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of gorging on large quantities of food, followed
by use of inappropriate ways of compensating for overeating to prevent weight gain.
 usually of normal weight. however, they have an excessive concern about their shape and weight.
 gag themselves to induce vomiting.
 do not pursue the extreme thinness characteristic of anorexia nervosa. their ideal weights are like those of
women who do not suffer from eating disorders.
 Bulimia nervosa typically affects women in late adolescence or early adulthood, when concerns about
dieting and dissatisfaction with body shape or weight are at their height.
 Young women with bulimia nervosa often have more emotional problems and lower self-esteem than
other dieters.
o Feelings of lack of control overeating during binge eating episodes.
o Excessive fear of gaining weight.
o Excessive emphasis on body shape and body weight on self-image.

BINGE EATING DISORDER (BED)


 have repeated binge-eating episodes but unlike bulimia nervosa, there is no compensatory behavior
afterward to reduce weight—no self-induced vomiting, excessive laxative use or exercise.
 many (but not all) BED patients are either overweight or obese.
 characterized by a lack of control overeating and by consuming far greater amounts of food than people
typically eat in the same span of time.
 driven by negative emotions.
