WHEN YOU ARE OLD

By William Butler Yeats (1865- 1939)

When you are old and grey and full of

sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down
this book, And slowly read, and dream of
the soft look Your eyes had once, and of
their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad

grace, And loved your beauty with love
false or true, But one man loved the
pilgrim soul in you, And loved the
sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

GOOD LUCK

- “and nodding by the fire”, “fire” it is symbol of element from the nature that can
burn, and word “fire” here burnt the woman’s youth.( stanza 1)

- “..take down this book”. “book” here has means the jouney of life.( stanza 1)

- “..of the soft look..”. “look” here it symbolize the woman appearance when she
was young. ( stanza 1)

3. Hyperbole :

- “and fullof sleep”, word “full” is hyperbole because describe the real situation of an

pace.(stanza 3)

4. Personification :

- “how loved fled”, in the real world, love is cannot flee, it is an

inanimate object.(stanza 3)
5. Irony :

- ‘and loved your beauty with love fals or true,” has means when the woman still
young and beauty, she was loved by many people, but not all of them’true’ that
was why the author uses ‘love false’ before ‘true’. (stanza 2)

- “but one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,” and “and loved the sorrow of your
changing face”. means that in the fact we rarely found a guy who loves the woman
in every situation. If in real life, love is good, this part tells that love is not always
good, maybe even worse than we thought, but it still love.(stanza 2)

- There is no metaphor, simile, and sarcasm.
