2. Topic: Armature Design

3. General Objective (GO):
To design the armature parts of DC machine.
4. Specific Objectives (SO):
SO1- Compare the advantages of wave winding with lap winding (U/C)
SO2 - Illustrate the procedure for selecting number of armature coils and conductors in
DC machine (U/C).

6. Mind map and Summary

7. Summary
OUTPUT EQUATION:

Armature winding:
1. In a distributed winding (used to overcome the disadvantages of the concentrated winding),
conductors / pole is distributed in more number of slots.
2. The distributed winding can be classified as single layer winding and double layer winding.
3. Double layer windings are much used in DC machines

Choice between a lap and wave winding

a. A lap winding can be used for any capacity machine.
b. But a wave winding is to be used only for low capacity machines.
c. While selecting the type of winding the following conditions must also be considered as for as
possible.
i) Commutator segment pitch should not be less than 4mm.

To be used by teacher as a teaching learning process guideline for classrooms and laboratory

Voltage between the commutator segments Eb on open circuit should not be more than 20V.

Number of slots:
1. Rule to select the number of slots
1. From satisfactory commutation point of view, minimum number of slots / pole can be taken as
9.
2.To avoid flux pulsation, slots / pole should be an (integer + ½).
3.Slot pitch λs = πD/S can assumed to lie between 2.5 and 3.5 cm.
4.For a lap winding, number of slots may be multiple of number of poles P or number of pair of
poles p (p=P/2) so that equalizer rings can used.
5.For a wave winding, number of slots should not be a multiple of number of pair of poles p and
should lead to a particular number of coils that makes the commutator or average pitch Yc=
[(C±1)/(p/2)], an even integer.

Number of armature conductors

1. Since the emf induced or back emf E = ZNPφ/60A, number of armature conductors Z =60 EA/
φ NP Where, φ = Bav πDL/ P in Wb.
2. For a preliminary design emf induced can be taken as the terminal voltage in case of a
generator and back emf can be taken as the applied voltage in case of a motor.
3. The number of armature conductors can also be calculated by considering the specific electric
loading.
3. In that case Z = D A qπ/I The number of conductors must be an even integer
