A Note from the Author:

This curriculum is meant to be used with Kindergarten – 5th Grade students. As such,
it contains a variety of activities, videos, and reading choices on a variety of levels.
Sometimes activities are noted that they are best for older students, and other times it
is assumed that the teacher will adapt the available selections to the age and abilities
of the students.

Several choices for learning and doing are included with each lesson so that the
teacher has options based on grade levels and personal teaching style.

Please don't feel obligated to do EVERY activity in every lesson. Remember, your
goal is to familiarize your students with the theme country.

So pick your activities to suit yourself & your students and be sure to ENJOY!

Best wishes,
Carol Henderson

DID YOU KNOW?

• The Philippines was named by a Spanish explorer in the 1500’s after
King Philip II of Spain.
• Because it is located in the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” the
Philippines endures many earthquakes & typhoons. A typhoon is a
violent storm with huge ocean waves that often causes flooding.
• Several years ago, the ruler
of the Philippines lived
extravagantly while his
people remained poor.
When he had to leave the
country, his wife left behind
over 1,000 pairs of shoes!
Some say she had more than
3,000 pairs of shoes!

LET’S GO SIGHTSEEING!

Living in the Philippines

The Philippines has several big cities with tall buildings and busy streets, but it
also has communities without modern conveniences. In the villages, houses
can be primitive and may not have electricity or indoor plumbing. People living
there may not have grocery stores or paved roads. As you watch the following
video, notice the things that are different from where you live.

What People Eat

Just like in many other Asian countries, the Filipino people eat lots of rice! In
some villages the rice is still grown without machinery. The villagers work very
hard every single day. Rice fields, or rice paddies, are farmed on terraced
hillsides, using water buffalo, or carabao, for ploughing and machetes, or bolos,
for harvesting.

The Ring of Fire
The entire country of the Philippines is in the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire. This
is an area that scientists know is very susceptible to earthquakes and contains
active volcanoes. There are 50 volcanoes in the Philippines, and half of those
are still active, meaning they have erupted within the last 600 years.

Popular Places to Visit

With over 7,000 islands, the Philippines has many beautiful beaches and
swimming spots, offering plenty of snorkeling, diving, and boating fun. Other
things to see are the almost-perfectly-cone-shaped Mayon volcano and the
Chocolate Hills – an area with over 1,000 hills that are the color of chocolate!

LIBRARY BOOKS
Find books in the J 915.99 section of the library.
How To Use Informational Library Books: To keep things age appropriate
and engaging, we recommend your primary objective with younger students
is to simply look at all the pictures and read the highlights. If you assign
required reading, be sure to base this on the age & ability of your child(ren).
Since our purpose in this course is to focus on geography on a child's level, we recommend
you skip the political and (most of) the history chapters of these books.

ATLAS READING
Read page 200 in DK’s Geography of the World Atlas (2006 ed.).
This is the preferred Atlas for Let’s Go Geography. The link is an affiliate link, meaning
Let’s Go will receive a small commission from purchases made through this link.

IN YOUR OWN WORDS

After you've explored and learned about the Philippines, you can
write about it in your own words.

Go to the Printables chapter at the end of this ebook. You will

find a Notebooking Page to make writing fun.

Print the Notebooking Page and write what you’ve learned. When you’re
finished, add this to your Travel Journal.

If the craft is bulky, take a picture to add to your Travel Journal.

COLORING PAGE
The Great Philippine Eagle is their National
Bird. It can grow up to 3’ long and weigh up to
17 pounds! It has the longest body and wing
span of any eagle in the world.

Since this eagle is an endangered species, it is

against the law to hunt or kill them.

FEATURED CRAFT
Make a Filipino Game!

Our Theme

Tapatan is a favorite game of Filipinos

and is very similar to tic-tac-toe.

Kids can draw a game board in the dirt

and use rocks as markers. We can do
that, too, but today we are going to
make a Tapatan game to use indoors!

HOW TO MAKE THIS CRAFT

What You Need:

• white paper & colored paper, 1 each

• 1 sheet of 12X12 Scrapbook Paper
• cereal box (optional)
• Flat Marbles in 2 different colors (find in a
store’s flower arranging department or in a dollar store)
• Scissors
• Tape & Glue Stick
• Crayons

Game Instructions:

Each player gets 3 playing pieces. We are using flat marbles in 2

different colors, but coins or small stones would also work!

Players take turns putting their pieces on the

circles, then continue taking turns to move 1
piece at a time.

You may not move to an occupied circle. You

may not jump another piece.

The first person to get 3 in a row wins!

Create your Tapatan Game Board and Envelope:

The Game Board

1) From the Printables section, Print the

Tapatan Game Board.

Either print it on sturdy cardstock,

OR

Print it on plain white paper, then glue it to

the printed side of a cereal box. Cut
around the edges of the game board.

2) Decorate your Tapatan Game Board with Crayons!

24

www.LetsGoGeography.com & www.ABookInTime.com
The Envelope

3) Fold the 12X12 Scrapbook Paper in half, point to

point, so it makes a triangle.

3) Fold it again, point to point, so it makes a

smaller triangle.

4) Open your paper back up. Bring each point

to the center fold lines and crease well.

5) Your Scrapbook Paper should now look like

this (see photo).

25

www.LetsGoGeography.com & www.ABookInTime.com
6) Print the Envelope Insert from the
Printables section on colored paper. Cut along
lines.

7) Put the Envelope Insert inside your

Scrapbook paper. Unfold THREE sides, spread
with glue, and glue them to the Envelope Insert.

8) Your finished envelope should look like

this:

9) Keep your Tapatan Game Board inside your envelope!

26

www.LetsGoGeography.com & www.ABookInTime.com
You can attach the flap with Scotch Magic Tape since it will come
off without hurting the paper.

10) Lastly, you will need 3 flat marbles in 2 different colors for your
game. Add these to your envelope!

If you don’t have flat marbles, use your imagination for markers.
You could even take markers from another game that you already
have.

About the Author
Carol Henderson taught her 5 now-grown children for
over 25 years as a homeschooling mom. She currently enjoys
teaching elementary history & geography in a classroom
setting. She spends many hours creating crafts each week for
these classes. Some of her crafts are published on the
website, ABookInTime.com, and in the geography curriculum,
LetsGoGeography.com.

Carol published ABookInTime.com many years ago as a

place where parents & teachers could find great historically-
based reading books for their kids, and the site soon expanded beyond good books. It has
grown to include crafts, timelines, maps, and more, and now includes geography resources
with its sister site, LetsGoGeography.com. Be sure to drop by!
