DEVELOPMENT OF PALATE

ULFAT

PALATE
Palate is developed in two parts

1. Primary palate

2. Secondary palate

1. Primary palate
It develops by the mesenchyme of the fronto-nasal swelling

Fronto-nasal Swelling Nasal Swelling Medial & Lateral N.P.

Two Medial Nasal Processes Inter-maxillary Segment Pre-

Maxilla (Primary Palate) + Philtrum of Upper Lip + 4 – Maxillary

Incisors

Secondary Palate

Palatine Shelves 6th week i.u. obliquely downwards

Attain horizontal position 8th week i.u.

Fusion of shelves within hours before – backwards

like zipper

Mesenchymal fusion takes place first, & then the

ectodermal (mucosal) fusion occurs

ULFAT

Oral view of the palatal shelves at 71/2

weeks, at beginning of fusion & at full
length fusion ULFAT

Mechanism of Palatal Closure:

Biochemical changes in the connective tissue matrix of shelves

Variation in vasculature & blood flow

A sudden increase in tissue turgor

Rapid differential mitotic growth

An intrinsic “shelf force”

Muscular movements (withdrawal of embryo’s face from cardiac

prominence gives mouth opening reflex , draws tongue
backwards, a pressure gradient between oral & nasal chambers)

Programmed cell death (Apoptosis)

Fusion is marked by mid-palatine sutures, median raphe, incisive

papilla

GROWTH OF
PALATE

ULFAT

Growth of Palate:
• Sutures (mid-palatine, palato-maxillary)

• Maxillary tuberosity

• Alveolar processes

• Remodeling at nasal & oral surfaces

Status of mid-palatine sutures:

*First Intra-uterine appearance fiber bundles
(10.5 week) across the mid line

* Infancy “Y” shape fibrous

tissue binding vomer

* Childhood junction between 3 bones

like “T” shape, with inter-
palatine “serpentine” course

* Adolescence interdigitation with

mechanical inter-locking

* Adult sutures obvious

(palato-maxillary)

dentition), C = Early adolescence
