Homework # 4

Mahafuzur Rahman

1. What is the total momentum of each of the following systems?

a) Two 1-kg balls move away from each other; one travels 5 m/s to the right, the other 5 m/s to the
left.

Answer : m1v1+m2v2 = 1kg(5m/s)+ 1kg(-5m/s)

=5kgm/s-5kgm/s =0

b) Two 1000-kg cars drive east; the first moves at 20 m/s, the second at 40 m/s.

answer : m1v1+m2v2 = 1000kg(20m/s)+1000kg(40m/s)

= 20000kgm/s + 40000kgm/s = 60000kgm/s

= 6000kGM/S

The direction is EAST .

Or west .

2. Georgie was pulling her brother (20 kg) in a 10-kg sled with a constant force of 25 Newtons for
one block(100 m).

a) What is the work done by Georgie?

Answer :

=w=F*D

=25*100

= 25N(100m) = 2500J

b) How long would a 100-Watt lightbulb have to glow to produce the same amount of energy
expended by Georgie?

Answer :
Watt=Joule/Time

100 = 2500/Time

Time = 2500/100= 25s

3. Convert the following temperatures?

a) 300 °C to °F

(300*1.8)+32 = 572 °F

b) 6000 K to °F

6000-273= 5727 °C

(5727*1.8)+32 = 10340.6 °F

c) 6000 K to °C

6000-273= 5727 °C

d) 120 °F to K

(120-32)/1.8 = 48.89 °C

48.89+273 = 321.89 K

4. According to Einstein’s equation, find the mass of a grape to contain 9 x 1014 joules of potential
energy. The speed of light (c) is 300,000,000 m/s.

(9*10^14) /(9*10^16) = 10^-2 =0.01kg

5. How much heat is needed to convert

a) 5 kg of ice to water at 0°C?

Q=mL = 5kg*3.33*10^5= 1665 KJ

b) 5 kg of water to steam at 100°C?

Q=mL=5kg*22.6*10^5 = 11,300 KJ
