Moreover, the presence of MRFs also signifies the barangay's recognition of the
importance of recycling and reusing materials. These facilities enable the proper
collection, sorting, and processing of recyclable items such as paper, plastic,
glass, and metal. By doing so, Brgy. Darahuway Daco contributes to reducing
the amount of waste that is dumped at the final disposal facility of the city.
There will be a consultation with the purok officials to support the said
project. The proper usage of these purok-based MRFs will be discussed at
67
the purok level together with the implementation of segregation at source
ordinance.
7.2 COLLECTION
This project aims to maintain and sustain proper collection, handling, and
delivery of city solid waste from Catbalogan City to a government-authorized
MRF, street cleaning, and provision of a Residual Containment Area (RCA) and
to assist the City Government In the implementation of the 10 Year Solid Waste
Management Plan of Catbalogan City as well as the approved City Solid Waste
Management Ordinance.
7.2.1 Overview
The collection of wastes in Brgy. Darahuway Daco is an important aspect
of maintaining a clean and healthy environment for its residents. The
barangay has implemented a waste management system that includes
regular garbage collection schedules and proper disposal methods.
Aside from household waste, the barangay also collects commercial and
industrial waste from businesses operating within its jurisdiction. These
establishments are required to comply with the barangay's waste
management policies to ensure that their waste does not harm the
environment or pose health risks to the community.

them with the necessary tools and infrastructure to properly dispose of
their waste. This may include providing separate bins in every household
for biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes, as well as establishing
collection points for recyclable materials.
7.3.2 Recycling
7.3.3 Composting
71
Overall, the composting strategy is a promising approach toward
sustainable waste management in Brgy. Darahuway Daco, but it requires
continuous effort and commitment from both the government and
residents to make it successful.
Gasification is a more complex process than waste incineration, but the reactors
used for both processes are quite similar. However, in contrast with waste
incineration, the gasification technology reduces MSW into simpler molecules,
and substances like dioxins, and furans are generally destroyed (AES, 2004).
The main reactor types are fixed beds and fluidized beds. Fixed-bed reactors
typically have a grate to support the feed material and maintain a stationary
reaction zone. They are relatively easy to design and operate and are therefore
useful for small- and medium-scale power and thermal energy use. However, it is
difficult to keep operating temperatures at constant levels and to ensure
adequate gas mixing in the reaction zone. As a result, gas yields can be
unpredictable and are not optimal for large-scale power purposes (i.e. over 1
MW) (Klein, 2002). Therefore, larger-capacity gasifiers are preferable for the
72
treatment of MSW because they allow for variable fuel feed, uniform process
temperatures, good interaction between gases and solids, and high levels of
carbon conversion. (https://www.ctc-n.org/technologies/gasification-waste)
7.5 DISPOSAL
One option for disposing of residual wastes is through the Barangay Material
Recovery Facility (BMRF). This facility separates recyclable materials from non-
recyclable ones, reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills. The MRF
also provides employment opportunities for residents who can work as waste
collectors or sorters.

Next, the barangay should provide designated collection points for special
wastes. These collection points should be easily accessible to residents and
regularly monitored by barangay officials. The collected special wastes should
then be transported to a treatment facility that can safely handle hazardous
materials.
74
should be designed in accordance with national and local regulations on
waste management.
Through this program, the community can also be informed about government
policies and programs related to environmental protection. This can help them
understand their role in contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
Moreover, the IEC program can encourage active participation from residents in
environmental initiatives such as tree-planting activities, mangrove reforestation,
waste segregation campaigns, and clean-up drives. By involving the community
in these efforts, they become more invested in preserving their surroundings.
Once a clear understanding of the market has been established, strategies can
be developed to promote the recycled product. This may include creating
educational materials on the benefits of using recycled products, partnering with
75
local businesses to showcase the product, and offering incentives for those who
choose to use it.
It is also important to ensure that there is a reliable supply chain for recycled
products. This may involve working with local waste management facilities to
ensure a steady stream of recyclable materials, as well as establishing
partnerships with manufacturers who can produce high-quality recycled
products.
Overall, successful market development for solid waste management recycled
products in Brgy. Darahuway Daco will require a collaborative effort between
government agencies, local businesses, and the community, thus boosting the
economic stability of Brgy. Darahuway Daco and addressing the unemployment
issues that beset the community.
