Unit (1): What is food?

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able
to:
1- To use monitoring comprehension skills while reading a fiction text.
2- Apply: predict the meaning of a set of predictable words according
to the context and the atmosphere of the passage.
3- Analyze: classify foods according to taste, the way of cooking, and
the cooking equipment.
4- Evaluate: determine the moral of the story.

Materials: Smart Board – Presentation – flash cards – videos.


New Language: fry, sausage, potato, ingredients.
Steps of the lesson:
 First the students will try to make their own percussion by clapping
with their fingers after asking them if they like rain.
 The students will be asked some questions about the picture to
make them have the eagerness to know the story events and to
improve their monitoring skill.
Who is the author/ the writer?
Who is this person?
What is he doing?
How does he feel?
He is sad, he is looking outside through the window, so what do
you think the weather is like?
What is the relation between the title, his feeling and the bad
weather?
What exactly has made Jan sad?

 Students will start skimming the passage and underline the new
vocab.
 Then they will watch a video mixed between some flash cards of new
words and scenes of movies that have the same word in another
situation.
 After that the teacher will start reading the passage, paragraph by
paragraph, and make sure that all students are focused.
 After each page, students will play a small game to make sure that
they are following.
 Do the same for the next page.
 Then the students will play a game of some critical thinking questions
to make sure that they get all the passage, and they can speak out
loud to express their opinion.
 Then the students will listen to a song of Daniel Tiger that has the
same moral of the passage.

Closing:
Daneil Tiger’s song: “If something seems bad turn it
around and find something good.”
