Attack Cement Pakistan limited: AN OVERVIEW

Attack Cement Pakistan Limited was established in 1981 with an initial capacity outlay of Rs
1.5 Billion including a foreign exchange component of $45 million. The company started
commercial production in 19888 with a plant capacity of 2000tons per day of clinker through
a series of expansion with the latest line added in FY18 the company boasts a production
capacity of 3 million tons per Annum.
With the Factory Located in Hub, Baluchistan the company is currently running three
manufacturing plants at its facilities.
ACPL has also made investment in a cement grinding unit in Iraq through a joint venture
with the Iraq based Al Geetan commercial agencies to form subsidiary a limited liability
company. The mill has a capacity of 0.9 Million tons at cost of $24 million.

Achievements
ACPL is the first and Only Company that has Quality control Lab that has
been accredited ISO 17025 by Pakistan National Accreditation Council. Moreover, we are also
QMS ISO 9001:2015, EMS ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001-2007 certified.

Introduction
Development of a country depends on the connectivity of various places with adequate road
network. Roads are the major channel of transportation for carrying goods and passengers.
They play a significant role in improving the socio-economic standards of a region. Roads
constitute the most important mode of communication in areas where railways have not
developed much and form the basic infra-structure for the development and economic growth
of the country. The benefits from the investment in road sector are indirect, long-term and not
immediately visible. Roads are important assets for any nation. However, merely creating
these assets is not enough, it has to be planned carefully and a pavement which is not
designed properly deteriorates fast. Pakistan is a large country having huge resource of
materials. If these local materials are used properly, the cost of construction can be reduced.
There are various type of pavements which differ in their suitability in different
environments. Each type of pavement has its own merits and demerits. Despite a large
number of seminars and conference, still in Pakistan, 98% roads are having flexible
pavements. A lot of research has been made on use of Waste materials but the role of these
materials is still limited.

Introduction

In weekly working progress I briefly explain what I learnt and what I gain from my four
month internship, and detail about the weekly work progress.
1st week (Briefing)
Day 1, 2 & 3

What Is a Bid?

The term bid refers to an offer made by an individual or corporation to purchase an asset.
Buyers commonly make bids at auctions and in various markets, such as the stock market.
Bids may also be made by companies that compete for project contracts. When a buyer
makes a bid, they stipulate how much they're willing to pay for the asset along with how
much they are willing to purchase.1

A bid also refers to the price at which a market maker is willing to buy a security. But
unlike retail buyers, market makers must also display an ask price.

Day 4

Tendering:

Definition / Meaning of Tender to invite bids for a project, or to accept a formal offer such as a
takeover bid. Tender usually refers to the process whereby governments invite bids for large
projects that must be submitted within a finite deadline. What is Tendering? Tendering is the
process of making an offer, bid or proposal, or expressing interest in response to an invitation
or request for tender. Organizations will seek other businesses to respond to a particular need,
such as the supply of goods and services, and will select an offer or tender that meets their
needs and provides the best value for money. Tender request documents; also referred to as
invitations to tender, Requests for Tender (RTF), Requests for Proposal (RFP) etc outline what
is required, that is, what the requesting organization’s needs are. These documents also outline
the particular requirements, criteria, and instructions that are to be followed. Future tenders are
generally widely advertised to offer opportunities to a number of suppliers, encourage
competition and provide a greater pool of offers to select from.

Work Order:
A maintenance work order is an authorization to perform requested activities on a work request.
Depending on the type of business, work requests can be submitted to maintenance by any one of
their many types of customers or staff. Once work requests are reviewed and approved by
maintenance, an official work order to complete the job is issued. In addition to the details

provided on the work request, the work order also contains key information on how the job will be
completed.

Information that appears on a work order includes:

 Description of the task or need


 Name of requesting department or individual
 Estimated completion date
 Name of person or team to complete the task (may be in-house resource or third party)
 Location of activities (name of facility, or name of area within a facility)
 Prerequisites to completing the end goal (e.g., parts, tools, documentation)

Hard Hat or Helmet
Hard hat or helmet is issued to each and every personnel working on site. It has to be worn all
times at job site.
Safety Glasses
Safety glasses are required at construction site every time debris is filled in air due to activities
on site.
Hand Protection Gloves
Hand gloves are supplied to all personals to protect against cuts when handling material or
equipment’s, during cleaning operations, cutting metal studs or similar works.

Safety Vests
Safety vests also called as high visibility shirts. Purpose of safety vest is to keep the person
always clear in view, even in the dark and he should be visible to everyone. Safety vests are of
different bright colors like red, green, yellow so it's easy for workers to see and locate each
other

Proper Clothing
Shirts, long pants and hard soul shoes, Safety boot are recommended.

Safety Measurement

Learning:
 Safety is very important in work site.
 HSE Department of ACPL issue work permit before work start.
 Use all safety PPE’s in work site.
 Safety rules are implemented to all workers present in work site.
 EHS department check all tools & equipment to use in work site then issue work permit.
 Permit are expired in 7 or 15 days
 Again EHS department visit the site then next permit issue

7.1 Road

A road is a long piece of hard ground which is built between two places so that people
can drive or ride easily from one place to the other. A thoroughfare especially in a city,
town, or village that is wider than an alley or lane and that usually includes sidewalks.
Bituminous pavements are constructed in different layers such as base course, binder
course and surface course. These layers are made of different materials and provide
different functions to the bituminous pavements.

7.1.1 Natural Sub grade


Natural sub grade is always present in the form of basic material like soil or stone in hilly
areas. If the basic material is not enough compacted and cannot bear load. Then natural
sub grade is compacted to gain strength. So that basic material can provide support upper
layers.

7.1.2 Compacted Sub grade

Sub grades are commonly compacted before the construction of a road, pavement or
railway track, and are sometimes stabilized by the addition of asphalt, lime, Portland
cement or

other modifiers. The sub grade is the foundation of the pavement structure, on which the
sub base is laid down. In fill areas, sub grade below the top 150 mm (6 inches) is often
considered adequate if it is compacted to 90 percent relative density. In order to achieve
these densities the sub grade must beat or near its optimum moisture content.

7.1.3 Sub Base Course


In highway engineering, sub base is the layer of aggregate material laid on the sub grade,
on which the base course layer is located. It may be omitted when there will be only foot
traffic on the pavement, but it is necessary for surfaces used by vehicles.
Sub base is often the main load-bearing layer of the pavement. It spread the load evenly
over the sub grade. The materials used may be either unbound granular, or cement-bound.
Unbound granular materials are usually crushed stone, crushed slag or concrete, or slate.
The thickness of sub base can range from 75 to 100mm (3 to 4in) for garden paths
through 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in)for driveway sand public footpaths,to150
to225mm(6to9in)for heavy used roads, and more for highways.

7.1.4 Base Course

The base course or base course in pavements is a layer of material in an asphalt roadway,
race track, riding arena, or sporting field. It is located under the surface layer consisting of
the wearing course and sometimes an extra binder course.
If there is a sub-base course, the base course is constructed directly above this layer.
Otherwise, it is built directly on top of the sub grade. Typical base course thickness
ranges from 100 to 150 millimeters (4 to 6 in) and is governed by underlying layer
properties. Generally consisting of a specific type of construction aggregate, it is placed
by means of attentive spreading and compacting to a minimum of95%relativecompaction.

Surface Course & Binder Course
In flexible pavements, the upper layer consists of asphalt concrete that is a construction
aggregate with a bituminous binder. The wearing course is typically placed on the binder course
which is then laid on the base course, which is normally placed on the sub base, which rests on the
sub grade.
A coarse aggregate bound with bitumen between the foundation and the wearing course of an
asphalt pavement.

Casting and Pouring of Reinforced Concrete


Concrete is a vital material in any construction of reinforced concrete and is the main constituent or
ingredient of any reinforced concrete structure. Thus it is mandatory to know this material in
practice including how it is treated, placed(poured), mixed and the equipment used for those work. I
got the practical knowledge in terms of those listed aspects of concrete.

CONCLUSION OVERALL BENEFITS I GAINED FROM THE INTERNSHIP

Introduction

There were lots of benefits that I have gained from my internship program. Since it
was my first practical experience everything there was new and important to me. I
mentioned the benefits in terms of:

 Practical skills
 Theoretical knowledge
 Interpersonal communication skills
 Team work skills
 Leadership skills
 Work ethics related issues
Benefits I gained in terms of improving my practical skills

Internship program gave me many opportunities to test and refine my skills, to make
theoretical knowledge applicable and to make it practical skill there should be a chance
like this. This program helps me to build and improve my confidence in construction
tasks. Some of things that help me to improve my practical skills are:
 Different site works was performed continuously that I had learned in
theoretical classes.
 The theoretical lessons that I take before the internship.
 My motivation and ambition to know for new things.
 The best relation I have had with the site crew.
Benefits I gained in terms of upgrading my theoretical knowledge

Internship program helped me to strengthen my theoretical knowledge. All the courses


I have had taken except some of them, focused on theoretical part. Since the practice
depends first on theory, it is easy to work for the one having good theoretical base. In
addition to that when I was practicing relate the theory with the practical matter, so at
this time it helps me in upgrading my theoretical knowledge. Generally speaking, my
theoretical knowledge got strengthen more by those practical techniques invested
onsite.

Benefits I gained in terms of improving my interpersonal communication skills

By the time I started the internship program I was not able to know how to deal with people
at the work place that I did not know the way to communicate with different workers. It
was difficult to me to communicate with the workers. But afterwards I believe that good
relation and communication skill is the key for getting the experience and knowledge
require for the internship program. Based on this I tried to change my approach to the
people at the work place and through time I was able to saw progress on myself. So as
conclusion I can say that I had got good lesson regarding communication skill while my
stay in the company for the internship program. I used to have different discussions with
my friends who were internee students and the workers at the site. During discussions
different ideas are raised. Through such team work, it was easier to solve emerging
problems. Therefore it becomes easy for me to improve my interpersonal communication
skills.
 Benefits I gained in terms of improving team work skill

Team work is the way of success and strength. I learnt that as part of a team, an engineer
should have to works with a positive attitude within a group for the success of a project.
When called upon to lead, an engineer must have good team work skills. Therefore I try to
improve my team work skills in order to be a successful.
 Benefits I gained in terms of improving my leadership skills

Leadership is a skill to guide, control and monitor peoples. The internship helps me to
improve my leadership talents to future employers, my ability to work well with different
types of people and my skills in seeing projects through from start to finish. I had seen how
each worker was controlled and organized to perform its day to day activities. For the time
being I didn’t practice leadership from higher level. However I meet with an efficient
project manager and I grasp a lot of knowledge concerning different issues such as how to
treat different persons and how to control the overall activity on the site. Generally
regarding leadership skill I had got a good experience. Also to be an effective leadership I
understood that personal values like:
 Confidence
 Effective Communication

 Leadership helped me to know the values of the work ethics, so that I
tried to practice and understood work ethics related issues during my
internship.
o Punctuality: - means keeping the companies work beginning and
ending time and to complete a given task within the given period.
o Office Disciplines: - on work place you don’t have to disturb the
working atmosphere. For example abstain from loud music, songs and
things which disturb other workers work.
o Reliability: - the worker should be qualified for the part he is supposed
to be performing. He must have appropriate skill and knowledge for the
task assigned.
o Honesty: - Regarding this value each worker regardless of its status
should abstain from bad behavior such as cheating, bias, corruption
etc..
o Cooperation: - each worker should interact and cooperate with each
other while working. That is because it is through such system
problems could be easily solved.

Useful Points for new Interns
 Keep calm in all situations. Calmness allows you to make rational decisions.
 Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to; it’s always better to ask how
to do something instead of doing it wrong.
 Always ask for honest feedback from your colleagues and supervisor. You’re in an
internship to learn asking others to offer advice on your development points will help
you to improve.
 Be polite to everyone you work with. You never know what you might need from
them next week
 Keep hard copies of feedback you receive and good work you do as an intern. It will
be useful to return to once the internship is over.
 Always take notes when you’re given instructions—it will help to prevent silly
mistakes.
 Don’t be downhearted if you feel some of the work you’re given is below your
intelligence level. You still have to prove yourself and maintaining a good attitude at
all times is important.
 Be innovative. Look for opportunities to prove you as a useful asset to the company
this could be by designing a social networking page or reorganizing the filing system.
 Produce a short presentation to show someone senior if you can get 15 minutes of that
person’s time. Show him or her idea you have for the company.
 Use comparative language to differentiate the intern from potential candidates.
 Highlight a special interest or a particular motivation for the intern’s career path.
 Are there particular interests that the intern has in his or her chosen field?
 Identify any observations related to the intern’s character, integrity, or emotional
maturity.

 Being a fresh engineers and technologists, internship and technical report are very
effective for us. They give the real practical knowledge about our study.
 I recommend that it is necessary along with the respective courses. In my opinion,
theuniversityshouldkeepmanagingsuchinternshipeventsforstudentsandacomprehensive
overview (reporting, documentation, learning perspective) should be provided
considering each and every aspect so that in future they come across with fewer
difficulties.
 I recommend my juniors to do an internship with full devotion. You will surely get a

CONCLUSION
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and met many
new people. I achieved several of my learning goals, however for some the conditions did not permit. I got
insight into professional practice and experienced that financing, as in many projects, is an important factor
for the progress of projects. It taught me the manners to deal with colleagues and labor. It contributed in
my knowledge and helped me to realize the responsibilities of a Civil Engineer. I learned that how to make
the project successful under require conditions.
One thing that should always be kept in mind is management skills and self-motivation is the millstones
for successful completion of any project. Related to my interest, I learnt more about the construction
phases, concrete technology and steel fixing for different structures and there is still a lot to discover and to
improve. The internship was also good to find out what my strengths and weaknesses are. This helped me
to define what skills and knowledge, I have to improve in the coming time. After my BS, I think that I
could start my working career.
However I could perform certain tasks in research better if practice more the research methodologies
applied in concrete technology. It would also be better if I could present and express myself more
confidently. I recommend my juniors to show their interests on mega projects having deep foundations like
Dams, Bridges and High Rise Buildings because a good foundation is the guarantor of a good structure. At
last this internship has given me new insight sand motivation to pursue a career in construction industry.
