(MBU-R) Official Release FAQ (v37)
“Retro Heart”
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

Dear Fellow Retro Gamers,

Hello and Welcome to Retro Games Savior (RGS) Official Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) and tips document. In it, you will find everything you need to get started with RGS
MBU-R (Motion Blue Unified-Revamped) image, and help answer most questions you may
have.

What we have come to find, is that many newbies and new users come to the discord and
have the same, if not similar questions about RGS build and image, or the same questions
about the add-on packs. As the discord and following grows, we sadly have not the time or
the energy to answer everyone’s questions over and over again. Thus, we found it prudent
to create this FAQ. If you are new, or new to RGS build, we ask you to please read the FAQ
before asking any questions.

However, please know that we are not strict as other discords out there, and we
appreciate you come to the discord to associate and discuss with us, but please understand,
that if we keep having to spend time answering many questions, then the work will be
delayed, and then RGS cannot release the new images and builds, or troubleshoot important
issues or problems. Of course, this does not mean that we will not troubleshoot or answer
any questions, but we strongly urge you to read the FAQ first. We won’t get upset at people
asking questions, but we also must implement a way to decrease time spent on every small
issue, especially with the release of a new version, hence the need for a FAQ. I know many
would prefer to just start playing, but if you read the FAQ, you will have less problems. We
guarantee this.

Finally, This document will get updated with each RGS build, and will include such things
as a package/add-on list, changelogs and instructions to get everything working nicely,
including explanations of new add-ons and systems featured. RGS put many hours into these
builds. Please support him as much as you can. Also, a big thank you to g-spawn and zestful
and all contributors of various systems, support and software to make this the most
awesome Batocera build released to date.

Thank you for your reading! Now, let’s do this!

RGS Recommended PC Specs (with commentary)

*Intel Based:
1. at least an i5 6th Generation (you can technically use at least an intel 4th gen
system, but PS3 games might lag. PS3 games are very CPU heavy)
2. at least 8GB DDR3 (16GB is best)
3. at least a GTX 1050 (GDDR5 model) or AMD RX 560 (I use a RX550, but again the
more heavier systems can lag in some heavier titles, depending on the game.
Older retro systems play fine of course. However, I personally recommend an
RX580 8GB GPU)
4. 1TB SSD or HDD for the base image (If you will install more packs, you will need
a larger size drive)

*AMD Based:
1. at least a Ryzen Zen+ / Zen2 (AMD Ryzen 5 2600) (I use a first-gen Ryzen 1700
with 16GB RAM. You can use a first gen, but make sure you have good amounts
of RAM. Ryzen chips love RAM)
2. APU is fine starting with 3400G and up
3. G labeled CPU’s have integrated AMD Radeon Vega Graphics
4. GE/U labeled CPU’s have integrated AMD Radeon Vega Graphics but lower TDP
(Avoid these CPU’s as they are not as powerful)
5. at least 8GB DDR4 (16GB is much better of course for AMD chips)
6. at least a GTX 1050 (GDDR5 model) or AMD RX 560 (Can get away with an
RX550) I personally recommend an RX580 8GB GPU and above. They are super
cheap now on eBay used.
7. 1TB SSD or HDD for the base image (Will need a larger drive if want to install
more packs)

*These are just recommendations, and you may use whatever hardware you have or can afford. Of
course, we wouldn’t be able to help you if you want to run Batocera on something like an old
Core2Duo with onboard graphics and expect good or decent retro gameplay. In that case, you might
have to get slightly better hardware my peeps.

Package/Add-on List and Instructions for

RGS MBU-R Batocera Build
(Current as of MBU-R v37 “Retro Heart” Update)
Currently at 193 Unique Systems, with ~26,000 Games!
(The ~26K amount is just for the base 1TB image. With all add-on packs installed, it will be much more.)

The only way to download RGS image is through back-ups.me site. If you are new to
discord and need an invite to back-ups.me, then politely ask someone to send you an invite
to back-ups.me site. Someone will help you gain access if you don’t already have it. Also,
please follow instructions in #How-To-Download channel in discord.

Full Package/Add-On List - All packages contain the full set of images, videos and arts to
replace what is included in the base image. Instructions on how to install the base image are
on the next page. (Please note: Some add-on packages are VERY LARGE in size! Make sure
you have space to extract add-on packages to your drive!) RGS strives to feature fairly
complete rom sets (no-intro sets) of all systems, but there will always be missing games, or
items not included. As a collector and game puritan, I am never happy with myself, as there
are not only roms, but hacks and imports and specials and fan-developed games, etc. The
quest is never complete, and the drive to hoard it all remains unquenched.

Always remember. Obtaining 100% of all game sets from EVERY developer is
IMPOSSIBLE. No one can get ALL the games.

Please visit RGS Youtube channel for showcase: https://www.youtube.com/@retrogamessaviourrgs6001

Disclaimer: RGS is NOT a developer or a games/roms distributor. Builds/Images are for

testing purposes only. Do not ask where to get roms, as you must own them from the
original game developer before using them in emulation. We will not direct you to get
roms, especially for systems in current use and development by game developers.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

Instructions to install RGS MBU-R Base Image to drive

First, download the 1TB Base Image from back-ups.me. Then make sure you have at least
a 1TB hard drive to write the image. Since this is Batocera Linux, you won’t be able to use
the drive for anything else, so it would have to be a dedicated drive. Some people use an
external drive and just plug it into a USB port on their PC and boot.

However, I personally recommend internally connected drives (motherboard SATA port)

for better speed and stability. Either one works. I also personally recommend an SSD if
you can spare/afford one if just using the 1TB base image. That way, everything loads
quicker. You can pick and choose what add-on packs you wish to install. However, if you
will be planning to install ALL the packs, then I wouldn’t really bother with getting or using
an SSD, and I would just use an 8TB/10TB/12TB/14TB/16TB/18TB or 20TB* hard drive (HDD).

Next, download and install Balena Etcher or Rufus, and write the image to your drive. I
personally recommend you to use Balena Etcher, as it is more user friendly. Rufus is also
good, but Balena Etcher minimizes the chances of you setting a wrong option that causes
the system not to boot. Finally, set the drive to boot first in your bios, or just hit F10/F11 on
your keyboard on first boot to bring up boot menu and then select the drive to boot into
Batocera. (I custom edited/made the boot splash. Hope you like it!)

Once booted in Batocera, ensure your controller of choice shows up in Settings menu and
game mapping/controllers. Also be sure to set your options in settings to enable the
share/server so you can see your share in Windows explorer menu. To navigate to the
share to copy games, find your IP address in settings/information, and then go to your
Windows machine and type in the search bar: \\192.168.x.xxx (where the “x” is for you to
enter the IP address of the Batocera machine) and it should show the share and let you
navigate to your roms folder to copy over your roms and game content.

*Current recommendation for Size of Full Packages with complete Add-on Roms is roughly 14TB to be safe and leave
a little room to breathe on your drive. It’s never good to have your drive full or almost full to maximum. Since we
are dealing with high capacity HDD’s, it’s better to leave a little space for defragmentation or naturally developed
bad blocks over time. Thus the recommendation is to get a 16TB drive to feel secure, or an 18-20TB drive to feel nice!

RGS MBU-R v37 Base 1TB “Retro Heart” Changelog

Changelog Introduction and Primer:

This RGS build now has some of the most popular (and also obscure) systems you
will find in Batocera. This version is very special, as it has never before seen systems,
like Sega Pico, WiiWare and Sega Chihiro, along with tons of new game engines just
to name a few. Many of the systems were re-worked from scratch, using the latest
romsets available with custom scripting to enable ease of access, use and playability.
There are also several systems that have been “separated out” from both the MAME
or FBNEO collections, giving them their own system wheel for nicer appearance and
style, such as Sega ST-V and Gaelco3D, for a total of 193 systems! RGS put in many
hours into this build. The wait was truly worth it. You are in for a very good treat!!!

Please note: It is strongly urged that you don’t mix v36 and v37 romsets from their
respective base images, as many systems are now completely reworked and
effectively different, and mixing romsets can break things. Please read the full FAQ,
with answers to many of your questions about the build itself, as well as system
upgrading recommendations. Please see below for complete changelog from RGS:

Reworked Systems:

packs are installed.

System Removals: (From the 1TB Image)

• large PS3 disc games due to space. The PS3 add-on pack has the same
games featured by RGS, so anything missing from v37 that was in v36
can be obtained by downloading and installing the PS3 add-on pack.
• a few Sw1tch games are removed due to size to free up space for new
systems. RGS currently does not feature a Switch add-on pack, so Switch
games will have to added/sourced from elsewhere for now.

List Of All Current Add-On Packs By Detail

1. RGS MBU-R 1TB Base Image (~900GB) – Essentially about 1TB in size. This is the
starter/base image that you need to begin. It contains all the systems with at least
several roms to get you started. Many of the systems have much more. Most older
Retro systems are complete with full rom sets. You can use this package/build/image
completely standalone as is, or add your own games to it if you don’t need or want
to install other add-on packs. This image has all 180+ systems already included in the
wheel. To install any additional packs, just navigate to the Roms folder, erase the
current folder of interest, and copy the extracted add-on pack to the Roms folder.
Then go to game settings in Batocera and update gamelists. Do this for every new
set of games or add-ons you copy to the roms folder.

2. 3do_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~60GB) - This is the 3DO rom pack add-on. Erase the
3DO folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy the folder to the Roms
directory.

3. 3ds_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~200GB) - This is the Nintendo 3ds rom pack add-on.

Erase the 3ds folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the Roms
folder.

4. dreamcast_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~120GB) - This is the Dreamcast rom pack add-

on. Erase the Dreamcast folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder
to the Roms folder.

5. gamecube_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~460GB) - This is the Gamecube rom pack add-

on. Essentially close to 500GB in size. Erase the Gamecube folder in Roms directory,
then extract and copy this folder to the Roms folder.

6. ps2_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~2.70TB!) - This is a very large PS2 rom pack add-on. It

will take a while to download! You are looking at close to 3TB if not more when
everything extracted. Please request seeding on discord if you see no progress in
several days. Also please be sure to erase the full PS2 folder in Roms directory, then
extract and copy this add-on pack to the Roms folder. Also, as a side note, the entire
PS2 pack may be completely redone soon due to a few missing arts. Please keep
this in mind.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

7. ps3_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~1.05TB) - This is also a large PS3 rom pack add-on.

Erase the PS3 folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the
Roms folder.

8. psp_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~370GB) - This is the PSP rom pack add-on. Erase the
PSP folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the Roms
folder.

9. psx_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~390GB) - This is PS1/PSX rom pack add-on. Erase the

PSX folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the Roms
folder.

Erase the Saturn folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the
Roms folder.

11. segacd_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~40GB) - This is the SegaCD rom pack add-on.

Erase the segacd folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to
the Roms folder.

12. wii_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~1.80TB) - This is Wii rom pack add-on. This is also a
very large pack, being essentially 2TB once everything extracted. Please be
patient with these large downloads. Request seeds/seeding on discord. Erase the
Wii folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the Roms folder.

13. wiiu_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~1.0TB) - This is the Wii-U rom pack add-on. Also
large add-on pack at around 1TB in size. Erase the Wii U folder in Roms directory,
then extract and copy this folder to the Roms folder.

14. xbox_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~1.5TB) - This is Original XBOX rom pack add-on.

Large pack. Roughly 1.5TB downloaded and close to 2TB once extracted. Please
remember to be patient with these downloads, as these are large packs. Erase
the xbox folder in Roms directory, then extract and copy this folder to the Roms
folder.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

Future/Upcoming Packs (To be revealed soon! Feel the Hype!)

15. switch_unified-r_rompack_v1 (~1TB) – This is a Switch rom pack/add-on. This is

sourced directly from a reseed of switch games, uploaded by the legendary
Corsair. Switch development is ongoing, so games are still being released. As of
the time of this writing, the full dumped set of all Switch roms is massive, taking
over 25+TB of storage! No way we can include all that in any Batocera build! We
will probably add slowly over time as feasible.

16. bigfish_unified-r_gamepack_v1 (~10GB) – This is a massive Bigfish games add-on

pack for RGS MBU-R Batocera with roughly over 300+ games! Each game was
tested and installed, with scraped arts and custom logos for a clean, professional
look. A lot of these games are super fun to play with friends and family, or even
by yourself to pass the time. You will need at least a mouse and a keyboard to
play these games.

17. popcap_unified-r_gamepack_v1 (~5GB) – This is a good, solid and complete

collection of all available Popcap games, with many of your classic favorites, like
Bejeweled 2 and 3, and Plants vs Zombies. While small in size, this pack is a ton of
fun for everyone, and never fails to entertain, both young and old. The entire
collection was sourced from clean sets, with a few versions that were still under
licensing from Bigfish games as their distributor. Each game was installed and
tested to work nicely in Batocera. You will need at least a mouse and a keyboard
to play almost all the games.

18. gog_unified-r_gamepack_v1 (~2.5TB) – This is a super large GOG collection of

games for PC/Batocera. This was a massive undertaking, and includes over 1,500+
GOG featured games. All games are DRM free and play perfectly in Batocera
under Wine. This pack is one of the largest, with only the PS2 pack coming close
in size. Please be patient with this download. It will take time to complete. Please
also seed as much as you can when you finish downloading.

(New packs are a secret! Hidden for now!)

8. Flash – This is the widely used and popular game engine used for developing 2D
games in your browser developed by Adobe. In spite of its demise, flash is still the
best technology for developing 2D games in the internet browser, and is set to
remain so for a long time to come due to other flash engines not being able to
keep up with it. https://www.gamedesigning.org/learn/flash/

9. Famicom/SuperFamicom - Famicom and Super Famicom are the Japanese

exclusive versions of the Nintendo (NES) and the Super Nintendo (SNES)
respectively. Released before its Western counterparts, the Famicom and Super
Famicom played all the same games that were released for the NES and SNES, as
the hardware was essentially the same except for the shape of the cartridges,
which could be altered with the plastic portion of the cartridge being broken off.
In total, Famicom and Super Famicom lasted longer than the NES and SNES in
Japan as opposed to the West, with the SNES lasting only eight years before
being discontinued in the US, while the Super Famicom had it last game released
well into the year 2000. This meant the Famicom systems were overall more
successful.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_Syste

in True real time 3D. It uses Advanced Physics to provide the best simulation of a
true to life pinball machine. https://futurepinball.com/

11. Fury - Also known as Ion Fury, it is a game engine built on EDuke32, a modified or
fork of Ken Silverman’s Build engine which supports modern operating systems
while also implementing a broader range of features for modern use.

12. Ikemen - short for Itsumademo Kanseishinai Eienni Mikansei Engine is a free and
open-source fighting game engine designed to be compatible with M.U.G.E.N
content, while also expanding on its feature set to allow for more flexible
customization. https://mugen.fandom.com/wiki/I.K.E.M.E.N

13. Sega Hikaru - The Sega Hikaru was an arcade system that was released by Sega in
1999. It was praised for its cutting edge graphics for the time, and its innovative
game engine and method of play. It was also heralded as the most powerful
arcade system of its time. It was eventually replaced by NAOMI 2 due to its
difficulty to program games for it and it’s expensive and easily broken/damaged
hardware. Sadly, only six games were released for the Sega Hikaru.
https://segaretro.org/Sega_Hikaru

14. Macintosh - later rebranded as the Macintosh 128K—is the original Apple
Macintosh personal computer. It played a pivotal role in establishing desktop
publishing as a general office function. The motherboard, a 9 in (23 cm) CRT
monitor, and a floppy drive were housed in a beige case with integrated carrying
handle; and it also came with an included keyboard and single-button mouse.

15. NeoGeo64 - The Hyper Neo Geo 64 is an arcade system created by SNK, and
released in September 1997, as the successor of the Neo Geo MVS, within the Neo
Geo family. It was the first and only SNK hardware set capable of rendering in 3D,
and was meant to replace SNK's older MVS system on the market.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper_Neo_Geo_64

16. Othello Multivision - The Othello Multivision is a fully licensed Sega SG-1000 clone
manufactured by Tsukuda Original. It exists because Sega's original intention for
the SC-3000 computer was to allow other manufacturers to produce compatible
computers in the hope of having a worldwide standard. Long story short, it was
not successful, and basically failed due to Microsoft releasing the MSX computer.

from the 32-bit console era and below, and focuses on things like raster effects,
palette manipulations, 'mode 7', and other features of retro games unlike modern
engines today. https://info.sonicretro.org/Retro_Engine

22. Tic80 - Tic80 is a free and open source fantasy computer for making, playing and
sharing tiny games. https://tic80.com/

23. Tyrquake - is a branch of the Quake source code released by id. Its purpose is to

38. Sega Nomad - The Sega Nomad, or Genesis Nomad, was the last handheld

off of full Genesis/Megadrive hardware in handheld form, and could play all
Genesis/Megadrive roms directly from cartridges that fit into the Sega
Genesis/Megadrive. Since the Nomad plays all Genesis/Megadrive roms, there
would seemingly be no need to include it in Batocera to play these games.
However, specifically for this release, the Nomad system will feature the
complete romsets of the recently released Genesis Mini consoles, with all
exclusive, never before seen/released roms fully playable with the latest Sega

Sega’s second partnership with a large game company, with Sega also siding with
Namco and Nintendo with the Nintendo GameCube-powered Triforce system.
There were only nine games that were released for the Sega Chihiro, with just
three that are fully patched and currently playable in Xemu, the Xbox Emulator.

RGS MBU-R v37 FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Hey, so can I use this new RGS MBU-R 1TB “Retro Heart” Base
image/build as a standalone Batocera build?

Yes! This build will work as a standalone system without adding

anything else. You can flash/write the image to your drive, then
boot and start playing.

2. Nice. So can I add roms that are NOT a part of the RGS Base
image or add-on packs myself?

We are coming up to the point where there aren’t many large

console systems, or even obscure systems left to include in
Batocera, but to answer your question: Yes you can. It’s very
simple. Just navigate to the roms folder, and add your games. You
will need to scrape image arts and videos to make it look nice
though.

3. What size hard drive do you recommend personally?

Everyone has different preferences, but RGS recommends a 16TB

drive. You can get away with 12-14TB drives as well if funds are
tight. If you’re serious about doing this, no less than 16TB is good
for space and breathing room. A 20TB drive is best for future space
and growth, but not necessary right now. However, in a few years
or so, you will probably find a necessity for more space, and so, if
you can afford it, a 20TB drive would probably be a good
investment. But again, it’s not needed right now.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

4. What about compatibility between RGS releases/builds. Can I

use the Base image romsets from v35/v36 in the new v37 Base
image if I wanted to? Does each version work well with each
other?

No, please don’t. As of v37, RGS has added many new systems, and
also re-worked several systems for the Base 1TB image. Between
v36 and v37 will be very different. There will be custom scripting
and other major updates for emulators that will break playability
for older version roms. If you use the v36 Base image, then you
must use the roms found in the v36 image. Once you install v37
Base image, then to avoid problems, don’t add roms sets from v36
Base 1TB image. This will prevent several errors or issues with roms,
arts and other important things.

5. Ok got it. But why only release a 1TB Base build, and not a 4TB
Base build or a 48TB setup or a 96TB monstrosity like other guys
out there?

Because having a massive setup does not mean that it is the best
setup. Currently, many large setups greater than 20TB are found to
be overinflated and somewhat disingenuous. Not all, but many are.
There are many curators out there who do offer these large builds,
but I encourage you to look for a curator with good size packs, and
a focus on the overall community and the availability of the curator.
Do they offer even a modicum of support? Also, can they be
trusted? Most of all, is it FREE??? Size is not everything. Don’t fall
for overpriced or overinflated setups out there, with disingenuous
game sets. Not all builds are equal!
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

6. Ok fine. You make a good point. I will stick with this RGS
Batocera build. Do you make it look pretty like CoinOps or that
fancy new Type-R, etc.?

Unfortunately, no my friend. RGS focuses on bringing games for

you to play, not to look at fancy artwork. All that fancy artwork
takes time and computer power. Trust me. RGS does make custom
wheel art and logos for his systems, but he uses already available
themes for Batocera, which saves both time and energy trying to
create new themes and custom arts for 1080p and 4K setups.
Furthermore, the themes used are often updated, so you have a
better chance of having all systems included rather than waiting on
custom curated arts.

7. Ok, but you didn’t explain why? Why not use fancy arts? It’s not
like it hurts the build.

Well, in terms of size and space, it actually does, but to be

completely transparent, it isn’t really necessary. The CoinOps and
Type-R builds do look nice, but they are heavily curated. The games
are often hand-selected and sometimes you don’t get the game
you want, but you do get the more popular titles. So it comes down
to choice. You can certainly use the fancy looking builds out there,
but then you often miss out on a wide/full/complete selection of
games, or you can use RGS build with openly available themes, and
have more games included. There are of course other nuanced
reasons, such as arts ownership and other scene related things, but
the choice is yours. I personally prefer more complete rom sets
over fancy looking builds, but to each their own!
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

8. Ok cool. Can’t argue with that. But tell me. That theme in the
Youtube video seems nice. What theme do you use?

RGS uses the widely popular Ckau-Book Batocera theme. It’s one
of my personal favorites as well, and as it has come a long way since
it was first released. It is one of the most complete Batocera
themes you can find out there. Ckau-book is regularly maintained,
and features logos and artwork for mostly every system out there
with rarely anything missing. The developers also work with us to
make Ckau-book even better! A few other themes are also good,
but I think Ckau-book is one of the standard ones that most people
should use in Batocera. Also, Arcade Planet theme also looks cool.

9. Nice. Ok, I will do that. Now please tell me, what controllers do
you officially support in this build?

RGS builds officially supports XBOX360 controllers, and Xbox One

controllers, along with the widely popular 8-Bitdo line of
controllers, wireless or wired. You can also get away with a few
cheapo Chinese wireless SNES/Switch clone controllers as well, as
they will show up in your system as Xbox360 Controllers. Mostly all
XboxOne controllers also work well with Bluetooth enabled PC’s.

10. Cool, but do you support Lightguns?

Batocera Linux as of v35, supports the full use of lightguns.

Lightgun support is by default included in Batocera v35 and
onwards, and supports most lightgun setups like Sinden, Wiimote,
Ultimarc, etc. Batocera v36 and v37 is essentially plug and play for
most lightguns.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

11. Ok got it. But listen. What is YOUR recommended lightgun? I

wanna play Lightgun games, but I can’t afford or wait for that
overpriced Sinden! Help me please.

Sure. All you really need is an original Wiimote (~$30USD) to play

lightgun games. Get yourself a Guncon Wiimote holder (pack of
two is ~$25-30USD on eBay/Amazon) and a wired or Wireless IR bar
($10USD, dolphin bars no longer needed) and you are all set. You
don’t need a Sinden lightgun, and the overrated hype it had has all
but disappeared. The Batocera developers took rightful ire with the
nature of the whole Sinden lightgun availability thing, and worked
hard to make lightguns easier and cheaper for everyone! So just use
a Wiimote! It is much cheaper than spending all that money on a
Sinden setup. Not saying you can’t, but you don’t have to. In all
honesty, I did eventually get a set of Sinden guns, (after waiting 2
freaking years) but I haven’t even used them, and they are still
sitting in their perfect white box completely unopened. This is
because the Wiimote works perfectly for all my lightgun needs.
Once the Wiimote is setup properly, you will not even think about
Sinden guns. To be fair, yes, the Sinden guns are a nice to have, but
games play perfectly fine with a Wiimote and a wireless IR bar. As
stated before, Batocera is now completely plug and play for
lightguns with minimal configuration and setup. We won’t go in
depth in troubleshooting lightguns on the discord, as we don’t
have the manpower for it, but there are also many videos online
with calibration and configuration instructions available to you,
and Youtube has many videos that focus on lightgun configuration
in Batocera specifically.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

12. Ok, so I gotta ask. Why use Batocera in general my guy? Why not
Retrobat or Launchbox? Heck, why not use Hyperspin? Do you
hate Windows or something?

Batocera is a very unique system. It is based off of Linux, giving

both the developer and the user more granular control of
everything. Windows certainly has its advantages, but so does
Linux. Yes, other frontends are more popular, but Batocera is also
very popular, and a lot of people are waking up to using Batocera
as their system of choice over the more popular Windows
frontends. Also, have you used or seen Hyperspin? Nah man. You
don’t want that. Trust me. It will kill your drive. Also, let anything
break, and your whole setup is toast. Batocera will generally resist
breaking unlike Hyperspin. Launchbox is good, and I would
recommend that. Retrobat is also good, as it is based off of
Batocera, but Retrobat runs on Windows instead of Linux.

13. Ok, you seem pretty sure of Batocera. So tell me. What is your
update process? Do you recommend I upgrade from within
Batocera’s built-in update tool?

Honestly? You really shouldn’t. RGS curates a custom build with

several tweaks and changes to emulators and settings that if you
upgrade using the internal tool, it will most certainly break things.
Also, most times, unless there is a major update to Batocera, you
don’t need to upgrade that quickly or so soon. Feature updates are
posted long in advance, so you know early on if you will need to
upgrade to get the features. For instance, Batocera v34 didn’t have
lightgun support, whereas v35 did.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

So there were many people of course who rushed to update to v35

for the lightgun support. However, v36 did not bring amazing new
features like v35 did, so you could wait for a little bit to upgrade.
Now that we are in v37, you have the latest Batocera stable update,
so you don’t need to update anything really. Therefore I can only
caution you. Please don’t update to v38 Beta! You will just break
things. And even if a new Batocera version may be available, my
personal recommendation is to hold off and wait for new builds or
official updates from RGS directly. This can save you much
headache my friends. Trust me on this.

14. Ok fine. No upgrading for now. But tell me. Why is there no
screensaver? You should include one.

Meh. You can add your own. Its super easy. Take any video you like,
any length you like, and add it to any folder you like. I personally
love to use the Batocera trailer for my screensaver, as it usually
features a showcase of system updates and new features to go
along with the new version. You can use any video or snapshots
you like. It will all run. Just go to screensaver settings, and navigate
to the folder and set your parameters for when you want the
screensaver to come on/start, and whala. You have your
screensaver.

15. So what about 4K gaming? I have a 4K TV. I want to play all my

roms and games in 4K if possible. Does RGS image support 4K?

Honestly, yes, but with caveats. 4K is possible on some, if not most

popular emulators, but things often break and/or won’t be too
playable.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

My personal recommendation is that you play all games on 1080p

at best, which is fine for most, if not all emus and games. 1080p is
not cutting edge anymore, but 1080p still looks great! No need to
have the latest resolution for retro games. Your games will still look
amazing and perfect in 1080p. No need to push the envelope and
have everything run in 4K, unless you have a GTX4080 and a Ryzen
7 7800X3D, lol. Even then, some retro games/roms won’t run
properly in 4K, so it’s really not worth it.

16. Ok fine, but now I have a super serious question. Does Batocera
expand to fit the full size of my disk? I don’t want to deal with G-
Parted and all those Linux tools to mess with my drive partition.
I want Batocera to do it for me. I’m scared, ok?

No worries. On first boot, Batocera will expand to fit the full size of
your drive. Most people should not encounter any issues unless
trying to do some fancy stuff, like making a RAID array in Batocera
or trying to do BTRFS (which I and others have personally tried).
However, if you run into any issues, please post a message on the
#support channel in the discord and we will do our best to
investigate and/or troubleshoot.

17. Well, don’t get mad, but I just have to ask. Do you think that
Batocera will get Teknoparrot soon? If not now, then when bro?
I want to play some newer Teknoparrot games.

Me and you both brother. I love Teknoparrot. These newer arcade

games look freaking awesome. However, the Batocera developers
have found it hard to implement Teknoparrot into Batocera
natively.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

I can honestly say that they have tried to make it work, but it’s not
so easy in Linux using the current Teknoparrot UI. Basically, their
exact words were: “There are too many inter-dependencies to get
this to work, so it’s not gonna happen for now.” Of course, this is
very disappointing, especially when Windows frontend users
(Launchbox, Retrobat, Hyperspin) can all play Teknoparrot games
so easily. However, this is not to say that it will never happen, but
the developers simply aren’t making this a priority right now. So
yeah, I totally get it. That sucks donkey balls. Batocera with
Teknoparrot would be unstoppable in my opinion. Seriously. The
current opinion and method is that Teknoparrot must run in Wine
using Proton or Lutris, but it appears too difficult to implement it
standalone without dependencies that allow it to function.
Basically, many of the utilities that Teknoparrot UI relies on are only
found in Windows. So unless there is a breakthrough with how
Teknoparrot runs, or if the makers of Teknoparrot make a Linux
version of the UI, I sadly don’t see a method to make it run
properly. There have been people who have figured out how to run
it in older versions of Batocera, but it would seem the functionality
has long since been removed. So basically, we must wait on the
developers, or begin looking for other ways to run it ourselves.
There are people out there currently doing this now, so maybe one
day we will get a breakthrough. We will just have to wait and see.
My personal recommendation is that if you must play Teknoparrot
games right now, and you wish to continue using Batocera, then
just have a separate SSD (~500GB) with Windows and Retrobat or
Launchbox installed, and just have your Teknoparrot arcade games
on that.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

That way, you can boot to that system, play your Teknoparrot
games, then boot back to Batocera when you’re done. This is of
course, a somewhat janky workaround, but it’s at least something
until Teknoparrot gets official support in Batocera.

18. Ok, I like that Teknoparrot explanation. That might work for me
too. But now tell me. Do you own all these roms/games yourself?

Wait, why do you ask huh? Are you the game police or something?
Do you work for Nintendo or some shit? Yes, I own roughly all
30,000+ games bro. I own them all. Bwhahahahaaa!!!

19. Haha, ok fine. But tell me. Where does RGS live? Where do YOU
live? I’m coming by.

Why should I tell you that? Do you want to come by and bake me
some cookies? Or do you wanna leave your hot girlfriend with me
for the day? If not one of these things, then don’t bother.

20. Ok, that’s kinda rude, but whatever. So can you tell me why RGS
uses the Luigi image/avatar for his discord Avatar? Like, does
RGS hate Mario or something?

Lol. Why don’t you ask him on discord? He’s a super nice guy and
usually available on there. Just don’t hound him with too many
questions, ok? He’s a busy guy and he’s also working hard on the
new build and addressing bugs/issues. Instead, if you can, please
consider donating to him. This type of work is tedious and takes a
very long time. Trust me. This is why we must remain patient when
waiting for new builds.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

Everything is being done to bring everyone easily playable game

sets for free, with no hassle. This is in addition to the curator’s
personal life and other obligations. Please remember this when you
enjoy your games. A small donation goes a very long way, and a
coffee is fine too!

21. Ok cool. But first, I want you to be honest. Who’s better? RGS or
Batocera Nation?

Lol again. Batocera Nation doesn’t do curated or featured builds.

He shows people how to setup their Batocera systems from
scratch. A lot of people watch him, as he’s been doing it for a good
while now. He’s actually a great resource to learn all about
Batocera, and also to get some brief history on each game system.
It’s actually super entertaining and informative. I recommend you
go watch his videos if only just for information and troubleshooting
purposes. RGS is a retro game roms/build/image curator that
releases builds to the community for free. All his work is completely
FREE. No one pays or purchases anything, same as Batocera
Nation. All work is done on goodwill and good nature. This is why I
suggest to support these guys with whatever you have. Smaller
curators with smaller followings cannot do it by themselves long
term as they also have to work and take care of their families and
other important obligations. Larger followings can of course do
more. However, even if small, we have to be willing to assist where
we can. Even a single dollar helps to keep projects like these going.
You can of course, support with whatever you have. All work is
done out of the love of games and as a personal hobby we all enjoy.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

22. Ok, that’s cool, but back to emulators really quick. Do you
recommend we update emulators in the build if a newer version
comes out between builds?

Honestly, you really shouldn’t. Emulators are already updated to

the latest available STABLE builds by the Batocera developers
before releasing their next versions. If you update or downgrade
to an older or newer emulator, it can of course, break things. In
addition to this, it makes it very hard to support, as most builds
were not tested with this newer emulator, and so time must be
taken to see what causes things to break. Often, the culprit is
usually the newer emulator itself. I always recommend you stay on
the current emulator version until you get official releases. This
way, it is easier to troubleshoot any problems or issues that may
arise.

23. Ok, I hear you. But tell me. Do you sell these builds/packs? I’m
not trying to be smart. I just don’t want to waste time
downloading or installing anything. Can you just sell me a drive
with everything already installed?

Sure, that will be $3800 USD, lol. (Some people will get this joke,
some won’t). But seriously, no, we don’t sell these builds. Not at
all. I do feel you, and I do understand what you mean, as there was
a time before, where I would rather purchase a ready-made drive
from a trusted curator, than deal with downloading and setting up
everything myself. I get it. Not everyone needs to mess with this
stuff. If you’re rich, you can simply pay others to do it for you, and
that’s not always a bad thing.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

However, as mentioned before, everything is free and available for

anyone to download and use. This work is all done by goodwill. If
you encounter others selling these packs/builds, then they are
essentially ripping you off. We can’t of course control others, but
RGS does not sell these packs/add-ons/builds officially or
unofficially. These builds are 100% available for free. In other words,
NEVER purchase this build from anyone. There are many people on
discord and online that will help you setup your system. Don’t pay
money to do this. It really is simple once you understand the basics.

24. Ok, ok, fine! I won’t purchase it from people trying to sell this.
Now final question. Do you think Nintendo or some other big
company will shut down RGS like other sites? Or will Batocera
become obsolete soon?

Honestly, it is always possible. Sooner or later, even the biggest

sites/curators/builds fall or become irrelevant with newer, more
advanced software, and we are not exempt. It is not a stretch to
think that in the near future, Batocera can be the old thing to use,
and something more newer and faster takes its place. However, as
long as everyone remains cool and doesn’t do something rash or
shady, generally we can survive. The goal is to bring you games that
you can play in a nice and easy to use frontend. However, all things
fall apart someday. There is even recent talk that Retroarch itself is
becoming too complicated for simple ease of use, as people merely
want things that work without much setup or stress. I have found
that if you like what is currently offered, then keep a solid backup
if you can. This is of course, up to what you can afford in storage.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

Now of course it goes without saying, that you should never go

around the internet to untrusted forums and show off or talk about
any particular curator or build recklessly unless the scene/site is
well known or trusted. Nintendo is a real powerhouse, and they
really do come after people. Like really hard. Therefore, it is our job
to help keep good curators like RGS and others protected. Let
vman’s attitude and how he left the scene abruptly and without
warning be a warning to us. Sometimes people can have a change
of heart at any time. Also, never forget about that poor schmuck
who got sued by Nintendo. Let that nonsense be a cautionary tale
for us. Sometimes we can’t help the attitude of the curator
themselves, but we can support and help the good ones to remain
safe and in good operation. We do this by supporting them, and
keeping an eye out for shady characters who only want to see
things destroyed for the rest of us. We have to keep supporting
curators like RGS and other good ones, so that they keep working
hard to release these builds and images for us. Always remember,
no one but the game developers and their parent companies owns
the IP (intellectual property) for these games, and no one person
“owns” these romsets. Let’s be careful what we do, and avoid
negativity and immaturity as much as possible. The discord will
feature everything you need to get up and running, and if you have
an issue, we can always address it here on the discord. Please avoid
running to reddit and other places to ask or talk about the build,
unless if it’s to cleanly promote through “word of mouth” about
RGS and the build itself. Again, these things are always risky, so
please remember to do your due diligence to help keep everything
cool and normal. End of rant.
RGS MBU-R (MOTION BLUE UNIFIED - REVAMPED) BATOCERA v37 BUILD

25. Alright, alright, alright! I think I got most of my deep questions

game/genre?

Ok Matthew McConaughey. You would certainly have to ask RGS

himself about his favorite game/genre(s) here on discord, but as
for me, I personally love fighting games. Both Arcade or Console.
Fighting games are my absolute favorite. I grew up on them. My
brothers all learned the Shoryuken before me, but when I learned
it, I was unstoppable. Never forward jump to me. I guarantee you
will be punished every time. Also, I really like the cool-looking punk
rock Japanese Fighters, like Guilty Gear, etc. I have however, been
getting more into the “Smash” genre lately, with the multi-roster
fighters, of which the Super Smash Series always rank top there.
However at the end of the day for me, I always go back to the old
originals…its Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, forever.
