Sir Elam, a mathematics teacher, followed the same arrangement with
some modification. He wrote a pair of numbers against each student’s name in the
seat plan. Some of the number pairs are shown in the seat plan below.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
The learner
• define terms related to the rectangular coordinate
system; and
• plot points on the Cartesian coordinate plane.

ln Exploration, Sir Elam made use of the idea helps to locate a
of the x-y plane or the Cartesian plane (in honor of point in the
Rene Descartes) to remember the names of his coordinate
students. The x-y plane or the Cartesian plane is made
up of two perpendicular number lines, one is
horizontal and the other one is vertical, whose point of
intersection is called the origin.
Rectangular
Coordinate System
An axis is a line of

below the origin is considered the negative direction.

The horizontal line is called the x-axis or the

abscissa and the vertical line is called the y-axis or the
ordinate.

The two axes divide the plane into four

quadrants that are numbered in a counterclockwise
direction, as shown in the given figure. The axes
themselves are not part of any quadrant.

indicates its distance from the y-axis, while the
absolute value of y indicates its distance from the x-
axis. The values x and y are also known as the
coordinates of the point. The coordinates of the origin
are (0,0).
For the point (8,7), 8 is the x-coordinate and 7
is the y-coordinate.

Rectangular
Coordinate System
To locate the point (8, 7):
• 8 tells how far to move along the x-axis, so count 8
steps (RUN) in the positive x-direction

• The second number in the pair, 7, tells how far to

move in the y-direction, so count 7 steps (JUMP) in
the positive y-direction.

You have now reached the point that represents the

pair of numbers ( 8, 7). You can say that you have
plotted (or drawn) the point ( 8, 7)
Rectangular
Coordinate System
Note: Various names are used to describe the x and y axes. The
x-axis is often called the horizontal axis or axis of abscissa. The
y-axis is called the vertical axis or axis of ordinate. The latter
terminology would require that the coordinates of the point (x,
y) be referred to as abscissa and ordinate.
(x, y)
Abscissa Ordinate
Any point can be plotted in the coordinate plane using
its coordinates. The first coordinate in an ordered pair indicates
the horizontal movement, that is, right or left and the second
coordinate indicates the vertical movement, that is, up or
down.
Procedure Plotting a Point
To graph or plot a point given its coordinates:
1. Begin at the origin (0, 0), move to the right or left along the x-axis using the
number indicated by the absolute value of the first coordinate.
2. From that position on the x-axis, move up or down using the number
indicated by the absolute value of the second coordinate.
3. Draw a dot to represent the point described by the coordinates.
Example 1:
Plot each point on a coordinate plane.
a. (4, 3) b. (-3,2) c. (-5, -4) d. (6,-3)

Solution:
a. Begin at the origin and move 4 units to the right, then 3 units up.
b. Begin at the origin and move 3 to the left, then 2 up.
c. Begin at the origin and move 5 to the left, then 4 down.
d. Begin at the origin and move 6 to the right, then 3 down.
When one coordinate is 0, the point is on the axes. The origin has
coordinates (0, 0).

Example 2:
Plot each point on a coordinate plane.
a. (0, 5) b. (-3,0)

Solution:
a. The first coordinate is 0. Since the ordinate is 5, move straight 5 up,
thus, drawing the point on the y-axis.
b. Because the first coordinate is -3, we move 3 units to the left. Since
the second coordinates is 0, we do not have to move up or down, thus,
drawing the point on the x-axis,

c. ( 0, -5) d. ( 3, 0)
