Job 3.0 COMPUTER NETWORKS AND COMMUNICATION 3.1 Basic Concepts of Networks and Communications a. What is network?

A computer network is a group of two or more computers connected to each electronically. This means that the computers can "talk" to each other and that every computer in the network can send information to the others. Usually, this means that the speed of the connection is fast - faster than a normal connection to the Internet.

b. What is communications?

Communication is the activity of conveying meaningful information. Communication requires a sender, a message, and an intended recipient, although the receiver need not be present or aware of the sender's intent to communicate at the time of communication; thus communication can occur across vast distances in time and space.

Communication requires that the communicating parties share an area of communicative commonality. The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the sender.

c. State the importance of computer networks and communications?

1. Sharing data and information. 2. Sharing of program / software 3. Sharing hardware such as printer 4. Provide communication possibilities faster than other facilities. 5. Allow user to access remote programs and remote databases.

Some of the importance of networks and communications are: E-business sell and conduct online shopping through a network Online education share knowledge, search for information and join an online discussion E-banking pay bills, browse account balance and transfer money to other parties without going to the bank

Long distance communication communication with people anywhere in the world can be faster and easier and save cost

Types of Networks: a. What is Local Area Network (LAN)? A LAN (local area network) is a group of computers and network devices connected together, usually within the same building. By definition, the connections must be high speed and relatively inexpensive (e.g., token ring or Ethernet).

b. What is Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)? A MAN (metropolitan area network) is a larger network that usually spans several buildings in the same city or town. The IUB network is an example of a MAN

c. What is Wide Area Network (WAN)? A WAN (wide area network), in comparison to a MAN, is not restricted to a geographical location, although it might be confined within the bounds of a state or country. A WAN connects several LANs, and may be limited to an enterprise (a corporation or an organization) or accessible to the public. The technology is high speed and relatively expensive. The Internet is an example of a worldwide public WAN.

d. Differentiate between the three types of computer networks?

LAN
1. LAN stands for Local Area Network. 2. Used Guided Media 3. A communication network linking a number of stations in same local area 4. LAN generally provides a high-speed 100 Kbps to 100 Mbps.

MAN
1. MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network. 2. Use may be Guided or may be Unguided media. 3. This network shares the characteristics of packet broadcasting networks. 4. A MAN is optimized for a large geographical area than LAN. Network.

WAN
1. WAN stands for Wide Area

2. Used Unguided media. 3. A communication network distinguished from a Local Area Network. 4. Its long distance communications, which may or may not be provided by public packet network.
