FORMS / ORDERING FRACTIONS IN
SIMPLE AND MIXED FORMS IN
ASCENDING OR DESCENDING ORDER

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Hello, my dear learner! How’s your day? Welcome to another day

of fund and excitement. I hope you will find enjoyment in answering
the activities in this module. Get ready!

Let’s Learn This

This module discusses about “Comparing Fraction and Mixed

Forms and Ordering Fractions in Simple and Mixed Forms in Ascending
or Descending Order “.

Let’s Try This

Directions: Write the symbol.>, < or = to make the equation true.

Write the symbol inside the box.

1.120 102

2. 36 306

3. 1118 1181

4. 652 652

5. 94 64

- 67 -
6. 9063 9306

7. 437 473

8. 2307 2703

9. 580 508

10. 69 66

Let’s Study This

Let’s read and study the problem below

.
In one seminar workshop on nation building attended by a
member of participants, 6 were women while 5 of them
16 8
were men. Who comprised the greater member of participants?
:

• What is asked in the problem?

• Comprising the greater number of participants

• What are given?

6 women
16

5
8
men

- 68 -
• How will you know the answer?
Let’s study the Methods to know the answer:

A. Visual reasoning
6 - Women participants
16

5
- men
8

• In 6 , one whole is dividends into 16 equal parts , while in

16
5 , one whole is divided into 8 equal parts. Six out of sixteen
8
parts are shaded and 5 out 8 equal parts are shaded. By looking at
the figure, we can say that 5 is greater than 6 ( 5 > 6 ) ,
8 16 8 16
which means more men attended than women. It’s men who
comprised the greater number of participants.

B. Cross Multiplication

5 6 5 x 16 = 80 80 < 48 ; 5 > 6 or 6 < 5

8 16 6 x 8 = 48 8 16 16 8

C. Changing to Similar Fraction or LCD Method

• Using Prime Factorization Using the listing of method /

Skip counting.
5 6 5 6
8 16 8 16

8 16 8 = 8 , 16 , 24 , 32

4 x 2 8 x2 16 = 16 , 32

2x2 4x2 therefore, the LCD of 5 & 6 is 16

8 16
8 = 2x2x2
16 = 2x2x2x2
LCM = 2x2x2x2 = 16

Therefore, the LCD of 5 and 6 is 16

8 16

- 69 -
To change dissimilar to similar fractions, divide the LCD 16
by the denominator 8, multiply the answer (quotient) by the numerator,
the answer is the new numerator. Do the same with the other fraction.

5 6 = 10 , 6
8 16 16 16

16 ÷ 8 = 2 x 5 = 10 16 ÷ 16 = 1 x 6 = 6

5 and 6 in similar fraction are 10 and 16 ; Therefore, 5 is

8 16 16 16 8
Greater than 6 ( 5 > 6 )
16 8 16

Here’s another example :

• Compare 4 and 3
5 4

A. The figure shows that 4 is greater than 3 ( 4 > 3 )

5 4 5 4

B. 16 15
4 3 4 x 4 = 16
5 4 3 x 5 = 15

16 > 15 ; Therefore, 4 is greater than 3 ( 4 > 3 )

5 4 5 4

Ordering Fractions in Simple and Mixed Forms

Let’s study the problem below :

Rita budgets her home activities as follows :

1/6 of the day — gardening and cleaning the yard

2/6 of the day — cleaning the house and doing laundry work
3/6 of the day — in the market, cooking and sleeping

• In what activities does she spend more time ?

• Let us make a diagram to find the answer.

a. What kind of fractions are they? (Similar or like fraction)

b. Compare the numerators
c. How will you order the factors from least to greatest or
ascending order?

[ 1/6, 2/6, 3/6 ]

d. How will you order the fraction from greatest to least or

descending order
( 3 , 2 , 1 )
6 6 6
e. How do you order similar or like fraction ?
• In ordering similar or like fractions , look at the numerators , the
bigger the numerator the bigger is the value of the factors ; the
smaller the numerator, the smaller is the value of the fraction.
• In what activities does Rita spend more time?
(in the market, cooking and sleeping)

- 71 -
f. How do you order fractions with the same numerators?
• In ordering fractions with the same numerators, look at the
denominators, the greater the denominator, the lesser is
the value of the fraction; the smaller the denominator, the
greater the value of the fraction.

Ex. 5 5 5 5
4 3 2 1

• In descending order :

( 5 5 5 5 )
1 2 3 4

• In ascending order :

( 5 5 5 5 )
4 3 2 1

g. How do you order fractions in simple form with different

denominators?
Let’s study the following methods to answer the question.
• Order the following fractions 5/9, 5/6, 1/5 in ascending
order.

1. Using Fraction Sense

• Close to 0 ½ 1
I I I
1 4 5
5 9 6

= Think of what the given fractions are close to.

Order the fractions in
a. descending order — 5/6 , 4/9 , 1/5
b. ascending order — 1/5 , 4/9 , 5/6

2. Visual Reasoning / Making Diagram

• Draw diagram / figure of the same shape, size and length
to represent each given fraction.

- 72 -
4
{ 9 }

5
{ 6 }

1
{ 5 }

• The figures show that 5/6 is bigger than 4/9 and 4/9 is
bigger than 1/5.
• How will you arrange the fractions in ascending order ?
( 1/5 , 4/9 , 5/6 )
• How will you arrange then in descending order ?
( 5/6 , 4/9 , 1/5 )

h. How do you order mixed forms ?

• Order 5 5/6 , 5 5/4 , 5 7/8 from the greatest to least and
vice versa.
a. Compare the whole numbers
b. Find the LCD and change them to similar fractions.
5 5/6 , 5 ¾ , 5 7/8 = 5 20/24 , 5 18/24 , 5 21/24

The LCD of 6 , 4 and 8 is 24.

• Since the given mixed fractions have common whole

numbers , you have to consider the new numerators.
• To arrange them from greatest to least.
( 5 21/24 , 5 20/24 , 5 18/24 )
• To arrange them from least to greatest.
( 5 18/24 , 5 20/24 , 5 21/24 )

4 3 5

9. 1 , 5 , 6 , 3 =
2 8 9 3

10. 5 , 2 , 7 , 8 =
6 3 12 9

- 75 -
Let’s Remember This

• To compare and order fractions with the same

denominators, look at the numerators, the greater the
numerator, the greater is the value of the fractions, the
smallest the numerator, the smallest value of the fraction.
• To compare and order fractions with the same numerators,
look at the denominators, the greater the denominator, the
greater is value of the fractions.
• To compare and order fractions with different numerators
and denominators use the following methods:
a. Visual Reasoning
b. Cross Product
c. Fractions sense
d. Changing to similar fraction/LCD method.

• To compare and order fractions in mixed forms, look at

first the whole number and use any of the methods above.
