BSN – 4A3 The Life and Work of Rizal

M1 | Imposition of the Rizal Law

Let's assume that you are one of the members of Congress during the year 1956, will you agree
in the enactment of the Rizal Law? Why or why not? State your reasons. (20 points)

If I were a member of Congress in 1956, I would view the Rizal Law as a means to remind
us of our history, including the challenging aspects of colonization. The enactment of this law
sparked controversy due to the Catholic Church's desire to conceal their past mistreatment of
Filipinos. However, historical records indicate that some friars engaged in reprehensible acts that
contradicted their teachings.
Educating our youth about these historical facts is of utmost importance. They represent our future
leaders, and comprehending the challenges our nation faced during the colonial era can foster a
robust sense of national pride. Rizal's principles of reform, patriotism, and equality offer valuable
ethical guidance, nurturing critical thinking and empathy.
Furthermore, the law serves to preserve our colonial struggles from fading into obscurity and
encourages open discussions about the role of the Catholic Church during that period.
Confronting these truths promotes transparency and deepens our understanding of history.
Despite certain concerns, the benefits of providing a comprehensive education about Rizal's
contributions far outweigh any objections. I wholeheartedly support the Rizal Law as a means to
empower the youth and cultivate a more enlightened Philippines for the future.
