Proteccion Conta Incendios Hdpe - KWH Pipe
Introduction
SCLAIRPIPE® high density polyethylene pipe represents the latest advances in both material and
manufacturing techniques. Since 1967, SCLAIRPIPE® has established an enviable record of cost
effective performance in a wide range of municipal and industrial piping applications.
As manufacturers of SCLAIRPIPE®, KWH Pipe is widely recognized as an industry leader in terms
of quality and size range of product offered. Evidence of this industry leading position is the fact that
KWH Pipe was the first north American manufacturer of polyethylene pipe and fittings to have
their Quality Management System registered to the ISO 9002 level. Further evidence of this com-
mitment to the industry and pride in our products is demonstrated in every business transaction we
undertake.
KWH Pipe is the only polyethylene pipe supplier to back its marketing effort with a staff of compe-
tent and experienced technical sales personnel who can offer design and engineering assistance, assur-
ing you of dependable, low maintenance, cost effective piping systems designed to fit your needs. Our
commitment to our customers is backed by a sales and service organization without equal among
high density polyethylene pipe suppliers.
The superior performance of SCLAIRPIPE® in most piping applications results from the combina-
tion of pipe and fittings designed to work together as a complete system.
SCLAIRPIPE® is made in accordance with the most stringent manufacturing specifications from
special high strength polyethylene resin.
Through a rigorous set of quality control procedures, KWH Pipe certifies that the pipe resin used to
extrude SCLAIRPIPE® meets ASTM D1248 requirements for Type III, Class C, Category 5, Grade
P34 polyethylene material. By the Plastic Pipe Institute method of determining and validating the
Long Term Hydrostatic Strength (LTHS) of polyethylene pipe, SCLAIRPIPE® is classified as a
PE 3408 material.
KWH Pipe maintains complete quality control from raw material to finished pipe product by estab-
lishing strict manufacturing specifications and by verifying them daily, using precise dimensional con-
trols and accelerated long term hydrostatic testing on samples taken from the production run.

Fabricated Fittings
KWH Pipe offers a full line of Factory Mutual Approved factory fabricated fittings for use in Fire
Protection Pipelines. The mechanical performance of Factory Mutual Approved fittings can be
enhanced by a factory installed Fiber Reinforced Polyester (FRP) overwrap applied in accordance with
a KWH Pipe specification.
All fabricated fittings can be supplied with either flanged ends and/or plain ends for field butt fusion to
the piping systems. It is strongly recommended that for installations involving long sections of butt
fused pipe, the fittings have at least one flanged leg to allow for post assembly alignment. Please contact
your KWH Pipe representative for more specific information on installation procedures.

1. End sections are machined to match I.D. with standard FM Approved SCLAIRPIPE®.
2. All fabricated fittings can be supplied with either flanged ends and/or plain ends for field butt
fusion to the piping system.
3. Not available in Class 200.
4. The subscript “E” on fittings’ dimensions refers to dimensions which are designed to be used by
European style fusion equipment and generally are longer than dimensions which have the sub-
script “U”.
5. The subscript “U” on fittings’ dimensions refers to fittings which are designed to be fused by
American style fusion equipment.
6. The subscript “F” on fittings’ dimensions refers to fittings which are fibreglass reinforced and are
designed to be fused by American or European style fusion equipment.

Flanged Connections
For joining Factory Mutual Approved SCLAIRPIPE® high density polyethylene pipe to other equip-
ment, or to special fittings, a mechanical fitting is usually required. For these types of connections, a
flange assembly is the preferred method. This assembly consists of a slip-on metal flange and a poly-
ethylene stub-end.
This type of flange assembly may also be used to join lengths of SCLAIRPIPE®. Factory Mutual
Approved stub-ends carry the same pressure rating as the pipe and are butt fused to the pipe end.
A stub-end must be the same Pressure Class as the pipe to which it is joined (i.e. a Class 150 stub-end
must be used with Class 150 SCLAIRPIPE®).

The table below details the bolt length “L” requirements for a SCLAIRPIPE® to SCLAIRPIPE®
connection using FM approved flange assemblies supplied by KWH Pipe.
The dimensions supplied are based on the use of carbon steel bolts and nuts, with the nuts being semi-
finished heavy hex and bolt heads being regular heavy hex.

Because of the many variations of flange styles and dimensions, it would be beyond the scope of this
brochure to detail all connections. The line drawing and table show dimension “A” the combined thick-
ness of a SCLAIRPIPE® stub-end and a Factory Mutual Approved Flange.
The designer should supply dimension “B” based on the actual flange thickness being used on the con-
necting pipe, plus gasket and washer thickness. Then by allowing for the nut and clear thread the bolt
length “L” can be determined. The designer should always ensure that dimension “C” is less than the
available thread length.
