Zur Entstehung der Etiden wurde dem Herausgeber von zwei
Hamburger Musikern, dem Kammervirtuosen Weschke und dem
Hornisten Hans Westermann, ~ die oft mit Brahms musizier
hatten~ folgendes berichtet:
Bei einem Kneipenkonzert mit seinem Vater war auch cin Trom-
betelgt, der speltechnisch keineswegs 50 sicher war wie

Vom Herausgeber stammen alle dynamischen Bezcichnun
ferner die verschiedenen Artikulationen, die als Ubungsvorschlige
aufaufassen sind.
‘Um innerhalb der einzeinen Etaden cin Umwenden zu vermeiden,
‘wurden einige Sticke umgestllt. Sie finden sich bei Brahms in
dieser Reihenfolge: 1-4, 12,6,5, 7-11.

‘Two Hamburg musicians, the chamber virtuoso Weschke and the
hor pyr Hans Westermann who often ted toply msi with
Brahms ~ told me the following about the origin of the etudes:,
‘While playing in a pub with his father, a trampeter took part who
‘had not at all the technical perfection as Johannes on the piano. In,
‘order to improve his embouchure and his velocity Brahms
‘expecially for him wrote some etudes which he handed over to him
‘with the remark, “Here I've written something for you. Have a
‘good practise, for... you know what I mean!”
All dynamie markings and articulations are to be meant as difereat
proposals for practise and have ben added by the editor.
‘To avoid turns of page within the etudes, some pages were put
into another rank. Brahms applied the sequences: 1-4, 12,6 5,
in
