Problem - 2
Find the following for the combustion of a
stoichiometric air-ethane (C2H6) mixture.
Consider 1 atm and 298 K as the initial
conditions. (a) constant-pressure and (b)
constant-volume adiabatic flame temperature
Enthalpy of formation at 298 K (kJ/kmol):
C2H6 = -84667; CO2 = -393546 ; H2O = -241845;
O2 = 0; N2 = 0
Specific heat at 1300 K (kJ/kmol.K):
CO2 = 56.984; H2O = 45.027; N2 = 34.113

Problem - 3
The LHV of vapor n-decane (C10H22) is 44597
kJ/kg at 298 K. The enthalpy of vaporization of
n-decane and water are 276.8 kJ/kg and 2442.2
kJ/kg, respectively.
(a) Find the LHV of liquid n-decane.
(b) Find the HHV of vapor n-decane.

Problem - 4
Find the (i) A/F ratio, (ii) Equivalence Ratio and (iii)
%Stoichiometric Air used for the following
combustion problem:
Gasoline + Dry air  Products (10.02% CO2,
5.62% O2, 0.88% CO, 83.48% N2)
Assume that Gasoline is C8H18 as a component.

Problem - 5
A furnace, operating at 1 atm, uses preheated air to
improve its fuel efficiency. Determine the adiabatic
flame temperature when the furnace is run at a
mass air-fuel ratio of 18 for air preheated to 800 K.
The fuel enters at 450 K. Assume the following
simplified thermodynamic properties:
Tref = 300 K; MW of air, fuel and product = 29 g/mol;
Cp,fuel = 3500 J/kg.K
Cp,air = Cp.prod = 1200 J/kg.K
Heat of formation of air and product (std.) = 0
Heat of formation of fuel (std.) = 1.16 x 109 J/kmol

Problem - 6
A solid fuel contains 6% hydrogen, 30% moisture,
and 10% ash (wt %, as-received) and has a
HHV of 11.6 MJ/kg (as-received). What is the
dry, ash-free LHV? Consider the latent heat of
vaporization of water as 2.44 MJ/kg.

Problem - 7
A coal–water slurry contains 70% dry powdered
bituminous coal and 30% water by weight. If the
coal has a dry HHV of 30 MJ/kg and contains 5%
(wt) hydrogen, find the HHV and LHV of the slurry.
Assume the coal is ash-free. Consider the latent heat
of vaporization of water as 2.44 MJ/kg.
