Tutorial 2: Thermochemistry

1. Find the mass fraction of O2 and N2 in air, assuming the molar composition is 21% O2 and
79% N2. MW of O2 and N2 are 32 g/mol and 28 g/mol, respectively. [Ans: Mass fraction of
O2 = 0.233; Mass fraction of N2 = 0.767]

2. A mixture has the following composition (number of moles): CO – 0.095; CO 2 – 6; H2O –

7; N2 – 34; and NO – 0.005. (a) Find the mole fraction of NO in the mixture. Express it in
mole% as well as parts-per-million (ppm). (b) What is the molecular weight of the mixture?
(c) What is the mass fraction of each component? [Ans: (a) 0.0001061; 0.01061%; 106.1
ppm; (b) 28.55 g/mol; (c) CO = 0.0019; CO2 = 0.1963; H2O = 0.0937; N2 = 0.7079; NO =
0.0001]

3. Consider a binary mixture of O2 and CH4. The mole fraction of CH4 is 0.2. The mixture is
at 300 K and 100 kPa. (a) Find the mass fraction of CH4 in the mixture. (b) Find the molar
concentration of CH4 in kmol/m3 of the mixture. [Ans: (a) 0.1111; (b) 0.00801 kmol/m3]
