SEMESTRE: II – 2023

ASIGNATURA: English II

CÓDIGO: 8104719

DURACIÓN DEL CURSO: 64 Horas (2 créditos)

PROFESSOR’S NAME: Michael Steven Garavito Huertas

DESCRIPTION

This course aims to give students a basic contextualization of the English language with the
purpose of making an introduction and approximation to an A1 level of the Common European
Framework. This will be achieved by fostering communicative competence through the
integration of the four basic skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) as well as the
grammar and vocabulary components.

At the end of the course, the students will have explored local and foreign cultural aspects by
endorsing self and social awareness likewise the linguistic aspects. Similarly, students will be
encouraged to make use of channels of communication with their teachers and peers, to work
responsibly and with dedication by enhancing the digital competence in order to improve their
learning process.
The knowledge acquired in this course is expected to be a foundation that will allow them to
ultimately explore academic and non-academic content in the foreign language, as well as to
access academic opportunities at the national and international level.

The global demands and challenges of the 21st century require people to be competent in the
use of foreign languages. In this sense, the A1 level aims at exposing students to the basic
knowledge of the language in a contextualized manner by considering the development of the
communicative competence, along with socio-cultural and digital practices. This implies to train
students holistically in such competences as a complement to their university programs, both in
local and global contexts, to contribute to their personal and professional development as citizens
of the world.

COMPETENCE

The student is able to understand, produce and interact in a foreign language, at a basic level in
accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference-CEFR, in intercultural
contexts, thus contributing to academic and social development.

LEARNING OUTCOME

The students will be able to interact by using basic foreign language knowledge, integrating the
four communicative skills in intercultural contexts, sharing collective and individual identity
awareness, and fostering soft skills and digital competences at A1 level.

METHODOLOGY

The communicative competence approach is meant to enhance thinking processes, such as

induction, deduction, analysis, and synthesis. Additionally, this approach takes into account
continuous student-centered interaction. To develop communicative competence in English, the
International Languages Institute means to apply different methodologies based on active
learning. These methodologies aim to actively involve the students to participate in their learning
process, connecting new ideas and experiences to what they already know.

The teaching and learning process will be framed under the CEFR throughout active oriented
learning scenarios, involving activities of interaction, communication and production. All of these,
in order to foster 21st century skills by means of multicultural contact, access to technology and
communication abilities so that, the students may use sources and work in a plurilingual way,
reflecting upon their social impact.

The teacher’s role will be to boost the student’s capacities in order to successfully reach the
requirements of level A1 keeping in mind their needs, interests and capabilities. The Teacher
and the students will establish learning goals and strategies to encourage and motivate
autonomous learning. Throughout the course, collaborative work is suggested to be
implemented in multimedia and technology-mediated settings.
