***IMPORTANT***
Never view directly with an optical magnifying system
(e.g. inspection microscope) any optical connectors
on jumper cables (i.e. patch cords) connected to the
amplifier unless the amplifier is deactivated (disable
mode or powered off).
For models with the fiber integrity monitor OSC coupler option, a connection must be
made between the 1RU MPBC Booster and the 1RU MPBC Preamplifier. If
combining the 1RU MPBC Preamp and a 1RU MPBC Wavelength Converter (WC),
the output of the preamp connects to ‘Line Rx’ connector of the WC (see Figure
18a). In addition, the wavelength of the 1RU- R35’s fixed filter must match the
wavelength of the 1RU-WC. The standard wavelength for both units is 1552.52nm
(other wavelengths may be provided if requested)

When combining this amplifier with a non-MPBC laser transmitter, the link designer
should minimize Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) by controlling the laser chirp or
line width.
1RU features:
Dual input –36 to -72 VDC supply entry
Contact relay output (Form C) for Loss of Output (LOO) and hardware failure
Two electrically-isolated inputs for EDFA disable mode and reset
Up to three optical connections (typically SC/PC), all with shutters
LED indicators for equipment operation and power feed status
Communication interface allows polling of all alarms, monitor points and operation

3.5.2 External Reset
The amplifier micro-controller system can be reset by applying –48 VDC to its reset
input pins J4-10 and J4-11. The reset input requires less than 10mA at –48 VDC and
will activate for input voltage lower than –32 VDC, i.e. –72V to –32V. The reset input
only requires a pulse of more than 0.05sec. Holding the reset input high will halt the
1RU-R unit until the input is released low.
After a reset pulse has been given to the amplifier, the micro-controller system re-
initializes and returns to its nominal setting and operating mode.

State Description
Supervised laser shutdown occurs when
laser pump is disabled or a fault is
detected by the MCU.
SUPV_LS
For 1RU-RxxF models, the shutdown also
occurs when there is NO Input Power to
the amplifier.
A Severe Fault that could prevent proper

device operation is detected.
4.5.3 Alarms
The alarms are used to signal abnormal conditions to the user. They do not necessarily
prevent the amplifier from operating safely.

4.5.4 Faults
The faults are different conditions that prevent the amplifier from operating safely. When
such a condition is detected, the amplifier is immediately put in Automatic Laser
Shutdown (ALS). According to the severity of the fault, different actions are taken.
Note: The laser diodes will also be disabled if the Amplifier Disable Input is active.

The 1RU Ethernet port is configured with the following default private IP address and
netmask.
Default IP address: 192.3.1.254
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
5.5.2.1 PC Configuration
Since the 1RU unit has a predefined IP and mask address that may not be compatible
to your present network, the following step will allow the PC to reach the 1RU NE.
D. If prompted for the Console password, input the password and then press Enter.
A connection between your computer and the 1RU device should now be
established, and the utility program will automatically start running. By default,
there is NO console password set up.
E. Use the keyboard arrow keys to highlight [serverConfig] as shown in Figure 35, and
then press Enter.
G. Use the keyboard arrow keys to position the cursor over the first digit of the IP
address. Type in the correct IP address and then press Enter to accept this value.
(Ex: 172.27.37.200). Use the keyboard arrow keys to position the cursor over the
first digit of the Netmask address. Type in the correct address and then press Enter
to accept this value. (Ex: 255.255.224.0).
H. Press ESC to return to the main menu.
The following parameter are factory set and do not require any changes. These steps
are provided for information only.
I. Use the keyboard arrow keys to highlight [Op_mode] and press Enter. Figure 37
shows the window that appears, and the parameters that must be set.
Note: Each 1RU connected to the same network must have a specific address (i.e.:
172.27.37.110,…119) to avoid contention.

8 WEEE
In compliance with the European Directive 2002/96/EC WEEE, all 1RU
products at their end of life shall be returned to MPBC as per standard
Return Material Authorization (RMA) process. The RMA shall specify that
the product be returned for end of life reason.
Equipment that is returned to MPBC through this process is disposed of in
an environmentally safe manner using processes that comply with the WEEE (EU
Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations and Canadian
environmental law at all levels of government.
IMPORTANT
9.2 Liability
MPBC shall not be liable for damages resulting from the use of the purchased product,
nor shall be responsible for any failure in the performance of other items to which the
purchased product is connected or the operation of any system of which the purchased
product may be a part.
9.3 Exclusions
MPBC reserves the right to make changes in the design or construction of any of its
products at any time without incurring any obligation to make changes whatsoever on
units purchased. Accessories, including but not limited to power cords and interlock
connectors used with MPBC’s products are not covered by this warranty.
To obtain service or repair for any equipment, follow the procedure below.
1. Call MPBC Sales and Marketing Group. Support personnel will determine if the
equipment requires service, repair, or calibration.
IMPORTANT
Never send any unit or accessory back to MPBC without a Return Merchandise
Authorization (RMA).
4. Return the equipment, prepaid, to the address given by the support personnel.
Be sure to write the RMA on the shipping slip. MPBC will refuse and return any
package, which does not bear an RMA.
Note: A test setup fee will apply to any returned unit, which after test, is found to meet
the applicable specifications.
5. After repair, the equipment will be returned with a repair report. If the equipment
is not under warranty, the customer will be invoiced for the cost appearing on this
report. The customer will pay return-shipping costs for equipment under
warranty. Shipping insurance is also at the customer's expense.
