1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
This document provides information for the user of the 1RU-Rxx Series Preamplifier
Unit. The various models of the 1RU-R series used to amplify signals received at their
optical input using one or two stages of amplification. The 1RU-R35 units are single
channel preamplifiers while the 1RU-RxxF and -R35W models are used in DWDM
applications when a flat gain signal over the C-Band region is needed.
The amplified signal is available at the unit’s optical output. Each stage of amplification
uses a laser-diode pump and erbium-doped fiber. The 1RU-R series of preamplifiers
has built-in electronics supporting different modes of operation of the amplifier.
Also available as an option for the 1RU-R series is a coupler for the fiber integrity
monitor Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC).
The present document guides the user through the proper installation and usage of the
1RU preamplifier with or without the OSC coupler and with or without the LAN interface
option. Recommended safety precautions are also highlighted.

***CAUTION***
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of
procedures other than those specified herein may result
in hazardous radiation exposure.

1.4 Optical Safety

1.4.1 National Standards

United States Government safety requirements for lasers and laser amplifiers are
described in the DHHS/CDRH2 radiation performance standards, 21 CFR 1040.10 and
1040.11. International safety standards for lasers and laser amplifiers are described in
the IEC3-60825-1:2007. The safety standards for optical fibre communication systems
are detailed in IEC 60825-2:2007.

1.4.2 Hazard Level 1M Sources of Optical Radiation

Under worst-case single-fault conditions, the 1RU-R35 and -R35W models deliver
invisible laser radiation with fiber-coupled output powers not exceeding 16 mW and 40
mW, respectively at their signal Out port. They are therefore Hazard Level 1M sources
of optical radiation. They are intended as telecom ready products for incorporation into
fiber-optic-telecommunications systems and meet full compliance with FDA/CRDH 21
CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 and IEC 60825-1: 2007 and IEC 60825-2: 2007 radiation
performance standards. Internally, the 1RU-R35 and -R35W contain one 980-nm laser-
diode pump. The optical Monitor port of the 1RU-R35W provides a fiber-coupled output
power equal to 1% of the signal output power and therefore is within Hazard Level 1
laser radiation requirements.
The fiber-coupled invisible laser radiation output power at the signal Out port of the
1RU-R15F and -R17F models is less than 40 mW and 60 mW, respectively, even under
conditions of the worst-case single fault. They are therefore Hazard Level 1M sources of
optical radiation. The 1RU-RxxF series pre-amplifiers are intended as telecom ready
products for incorporation into fiber-optic-telecommunications systems and are fully
compliant with IEC 60825-1: 2007 and IEC 60825-2: 2007 radiation performance
standards and comply with FDA standards for laser products except for deviations
pursuant to Laser Notice No. 50, dated June 24, 2007. Internally, the 1RU-RxxF
models contain one 980-nm laser-diode pump. The optical Monitor port provides a
fiber-coupled output power equal to 1% of the signal output power and therefore is
within Hazard Level 1 laser radiation requirements.
Safety Specifications:
1) Wavelength range: 1520 to 1570nm (invisible, infrared region).
2) Beam size: The beam is normally safely confined within a single-mode optical
fiber (SMF-28e) with a mode-field diameter of 10.4  0.5 m at 1550 nm.

2
Department of Health & Human Services / Center for Devices & Radiological Health
3
International Electro technical Commission

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 13 of 85

3) Beam divergence: If the beam is allowed to escape into free space, the beam
divergence (full angle) is given by:
DIV = 4/ MFD
where MFD is the fiber mode field diameter
Therefore the beam divergence at the output ports of the 1RU pre-amplifiers is
190  9 mrad.
4) Model 1RU-R35 maximum output power (under worst-case single-fault
conditions): In the absence of an input signal, the maximum output power (in the
form of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE)) of this optical amplifier is equal or
less than 0 dBm (1mW). With a saturating input signal of -4 dBm (0.4 mW), the
maximum output power will NOT exceed 16 mW, thereby meeting Hazard Level
1M requirements.
5) Model 1RU-R35W maximum output power (under worst-case single-fault
conditions): In the absence of an input signal, the maximum output power (in the
form of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE)) is less than 16dBm (40mW).
With a saturating input signal of -4 dBm (0.4 mW), the maximum output power
will NOT exceed 40 mW, thereby meeting Hazard Level 1M requirements.
6) Model 1RU-R15F maximum output power (under worst-case single-fault
conditions): In the absence of an input signal, the amplifier is shutdown and
therefore there is no output power. With a saturating input signal of 0 dBm
(1mW), the maximum output power will NOT exceed 40 mW, thereby meeting
Hazard Level 1M requirements.
7) Model 1RU-R17F maximum output power (under worst-case single-fault
conditions): In the absence of an input signal, the amplifier is shutdown and
therefore there is no output power. With a saturating input signal of 0 dBm
(1mW), the maximum output power will NOT exceed 60 mW, thereby meeting
Hazard Level 1M requirements.
8) The output connectors on all 1RU pre-amplifiers are shuttered optical connectors
that prevent accidental exposure in the event that there is NO optical fibre
connected.

1.4.3 Connecting Optical Cables

Optical connections to the 1RU-R are made via an SC/PC adapter with spring-loaded
shutters. Other types of connectors are also available as options. (See Section 1.2 &
Section 2.5, for further details.)

1.4.4 Eye Protection

Under normal operating conditions, with an optical cable connected to the output, or
with the shutters closed on both adapters, there is no optical radiation emitted into free
space. No special eye protection is thus required.

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 14 of 85

***IMPORTANT***
Never view directly with an optical magnifying system
(e.g. inspection microscope) any optical connectors
on jumper cables (i.e. patch cords) connected to the
amplifier unless the amplifier is deactivated (disable

2.2 Mechanical Installation for Operation

The 1RU-R unit has been designed to safely and securely fit into four types of racks. A
19” TIA, a 23” ANSI, a standard ETSI 600mm x 300mm or a mid-mount ETSI 600mm x
300mm rack depending on the bracket mounting option.
The 1RU-R unit is fastened to the front of the rack via four front-mounted screws; the
clearance holes that are provided in the 1RU-R unit mounting brackets accept either M6
or 1/4-20 screws. The equipment is provided with M6 screws for ETSI or 12-24 UNC
screws for TIA or ANSI mounting option. The mounting brackets provide a guide for
proper clearance on top and bottom for cooling the 1RU-R unit. The overall rack unit is
2U. The electrical cables can be routed either along the left or right hand side of the
unit, allowing the unit to be placed up against a wall. The fiber optic cables must be
routed on the left side because of their exit angle.

The 1RU-R has a storage-case-temperature range of -40C to 70C and an operational
ambient temperature range of -5C to +55C.

2.4 Electrical Installation for Operation

The 1RU-R has four electrical connections including the power feed interfaces. Two
14 AWG power cables are included with the unit. Also provided with the unit, is an RS-
232 cable to interface the CT software via a computer. The Alarm solder cup and shell

through the hole of the stud and tightening the thumbscrew. The Earth ground location
is identified by the following symbol.

Power Feed (J1 and J2)

As seen in Figure 15, the 1RU-R power feeds A and B are connected with 14 AWG two-
conductor cables. A 3mm flat screwdriver is needed to open the connector spring
contact by inserting it in the upper cavity above the contact. The pin terminal of the
conductor can then be inserted into the connector and the spring contact released by
removing the screwdriver.

External Input and Output (Alarm J4)

As seen in Figure 15, the external input is wired with the internal power feed of the 1RU-
R. The internal signalling feed is protected against short-circuit and provides sufficient
power to both inputs. Using the 1RU-R internal signalling power decreases the number
of conductors to wire between the terminal equipment and station power supply.
The alarm contacts are also located on the same connector J4. Each relay contacts
provide NO and NC outputs.
The external input and output must be wired to a DB15 male connector. We
recommend using 22 AWG conductor. A set of solder cup DB15 male connectors and
straight exit shell are included as accessories with each 1RU-R ordered.

The external input can also be fed from an external power supply. Figure 17 represents
the wiring of the external input from the station supply A. Since the 1RU-R external
inputs are designed around an opto-isolator, the supply source may even be
independent from the station power supply (the isolation provided by the opto-isolator
exceeds the maximum power supply voltage of 72 Volts).

2.5 Optical Interface

The typical optical interface connectors used are SC/PC type, although optional
connectors can be ordered (refer to Section 1.2 for the optical interface connector type).
These industry-standard connector types are readily available commercially. Keep the
shutters closed when no input cables are connected.

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 28 of 85

It is generally prudent to avoid excessive connection and disconnection to the input and
output connectors, as this will cause degradation of the surface quality of the
connectors and increase the chances of scratching. Note that any increase in the
connector loss on the input adds directly to the amplifier’s noise figure. If the user
anticipates the need to frequently connect and disconnect the 1RU-R, it is highly
recommended that jumper cables (i.e. patch cords) be connected to all 1RU Optical
ports, to which the connection and disconnection can be made.
If degradation in output power or noise figure is noted, this may be due to a dirty
connector. The connectors may be cleaned with high-quality alcohol and a clean, lint-
free cloth.

***IMPORTANT***
Never view directly with an optical magnifying system
(e.g. inspection microscope) any optical connectors
on jumper cables (i.e. patch cords) connected to the
amplifier unless the amplifier is deactivated (disable
mode or powered off).

2.6 Power-up Operation

The 1RU-R unit has a default operating condition at power-up.
For the 1RU-R35 and -R35W models, the factory default setup at power-up is to have
the amplifier in APC mode with an output power setting defined by the user at time of
purchase. If no optical signal is applied to the 1RU-R input, the amplifier output is
limited to that corresponding to the output at maximum pump laser diode drive current.
For the 1RU-RxxF models, the factory default setup at power-up is to have the amplifier
in AGC mode with a gain setting equal to its nominal value (Ex: 1RU-R15F will have
Gain = 15dB). If no optical signal is applied to the 1RU-R input, the amplifier output is
OFF.
The user can store a different setup in the non-volatile memory by using the Save
Settings command. The Restore Default Settings command allows the unit to revert to
the factory-default setup.

3 USING THE AMPLIFIER
3.1 Application
The 1RU-R series of preamplifiers are designed to provide a cost-effective solution to
link extension where expensive network monitoring and communication, as well as
power supply and alarm redundancies are not necessarily required. These EDFA
network elements are compact and easy to install and maintain.
This product line allows the user to have access to such features as alarms, dual input
DC power feed, Craft terminal interface, and Automatic Current Control (ACC) mode or
Automatic Power Control (APC) mode and, in the case of the 1RU-RxxF models,
Automatic Gain Control (AGC) mode.
 The 1RU-R unit operates as an optical amplifier before decoding of the transmission
signal. In a link, this EDFA is installed immediately before the receiver equipment to
provide pre-amplification of the signal after the link.
The 1RU-R35 model uses a fixed narrowband ASE rejection filter with a standard
center wavelength of 1552.52 nm, and provides up to 35 dB of gain. In typical
operating conditions, the output power will be in the range from –15 to 0 dBm. The
Table below shows the recommended output power range vs data rate when the
1RU-R35 is used in conjunction with a 1RU MPBC Wavelength Converter (WC).

Data Rate Min Output Max Output

Power (dBm) Power (dBm)
STM-1 -15 -8
STM-4 -15 -8
STM-16 -15 -3
STM-64 -7 -2

 For models with the fiber integrity monitor OSC coupler option, a connection must be
made between the 1RU MPBC Booster and the 1RU MPBC Preamplifier. If
combining the 1RU MPBC Preamp and a 1RU MPBC Wavelength Converter (WC),
the output of the preamp connects to ‘Line Rx’ connector of the WC (see Figure
18a). In addition, the wavelength of the 1RU- R35’s fixed filter must match the
wavelength of the 1RU-WC. The standard wavelength for both units is 1552.52nm
(other wavelengths may be provided if requested)
Figure 18b shows an example of a 1RU-R link operating with generic equipment.

status of the equipment (RS-232 serial Interface or optional Ethernet Interface)
 Craft terminal software with GUI
 Control of the amplifier in ACC, APC, or AGC mode (depending on model)

1RU-R series features:

The 1RU R-series is built around MPB Communications’ EOA product line (see Figure
19 & Figure 20). The EOA module is a high performance EDFA, which will be
described in section 3.3.
OSC Coupler (C1 option):
The OSC Coupler option is available with the 1RU-R35 and -R35W models. This extra
coupler allows the user to transmit/receive a 1625nm OSC signal from the input port of
the preamp (depending on the model of 1RU-P OSC option selected).
LAN (ETH232 option):
The LAN option is available on any 1RU-R Series models. This feature allows the

3.3 EOA Module
MPB Communications' Erbium-Doped-Fiber Amplifiers are optical amplifier products
designed for incorporation into fiber-optic-telecommunications systems. The
preamplifier members of this product family feature a wide operational wavelength
range over the full C-band (1530 nm to 1565 nm) with high gain and low Noise Figure.
Gain flattened models for DWDM systems are also available. The built-in electronics
provide independent driving of the optical amplifiers either in automatic-current -control
(ACC) mode, automatic-power-control (APC) mode, or automatic gain control (AGC)
mode (for RxxF Models only).

Figure 21 - EDFA Module Block diagram (R35 and -R35W Models)

The EOA preamplifier module includes a single laser diode, which serves as pump for a
length of erbium-doped fiber. All preamplifiers feature built-in output isolators to avoid
reflections that can otherwise impair system performance. Figure 21 shows a block
diagram of the EOA-S preamplifier with fixed narrowband ASE rejection filter.

3.4 Fiber Integrity OSC Coupler Option

In the 1RU-R series preamplifiers with the OSC Coupler option, a C/L-band WDM is
inserted between the signal input port and the gain stage.
As shown in Figure 19, the OSC subsystem includes:
 The OSC coupler located in the preamplifier EOA-S housing.
The fiber integrity OSC Coupler option connects using an SC/PC connector. If using
the MPBC 1RU-Power amplifier with OSC option in conjunction with 1RU-R series
preamplifier with the OSC Coupler option (recommended), connect the “OSC’ connector
of the Power amplifier to the ‘OSC’ connector of the preamplifier (see Figure 18a).

3.5 System Operation

The 1RU-R unit is a stand-alone amplifier that requires only –48VDC supply to operate.
At power up, the unit reads the factory and user’s parameters from its non-volatile
memory and initializes the optical amplifier and peripherals (LEDs and contact relays).
The unit will check for hardware or software failure, turn on its Laser On indicator and
then turn on the EDFA to operate at its setpoint power level. If during initialization or
during normal operation the unit detects a hardware or software failure, the unit turns on
the Fault indicator and activates the Fault contact closure. If during normal operation,
there is NO input signal (for the RxxF model ONLY), then the output is disabled. The
unit also monitors two external inputs (amplifier disable and amplifier reset), which can
be configured at the site by hard wiring them with remote contact closures. For
example, the user may want to disable the amplifier (stop all radiation emission from the
unit) for maintenance purposes such as optical fiber repair or connector cleaning. This
can be done easily by supplying -48V to the external DISABLE input on the alarm
connector or using the software command offered in the craft terminal or via
HyperTerminal.
In case of a firmware problem, the unit turns on the Fault indication and activates the
Fault contact closure. If the Loss Of Output (LOO) contact closure is also active (optical
path failure, service affected), a remote supervision system could decide to try to fix the
situation by sending a -48V pulse at the external RESET input. Since a reset pulse
would shutdown the EDFA for few seconds (initialization period), this type of action
should be done only if the LOO alarm is active. Otherwise, this action could cause an
unnecessary disruption of the traffic.
The equipment can provide detailed information on all internal monitor points and
operation status via its communications interface (serial or ethernet). The information
must be polled via a set of ASCII commands listed in a later section of this document or

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 36 of 85

via the MPBC 1RU-R unit graphical user interface (GUI). The interface can also be
used to set operating parameters and control commands such as DISABLE.
A 10BaseT interface is offered to provide a LAN connection to the 1RU-Rxx product.
The LAN connection must be set via Telnet command and the 1RU-Rxx product can be
remotely managed from the LAN using the 1RU craft terminal software.
Table 1 below, provides a tabulated presentation of the hardware user’s indication for
each problem occurrence on the 1RU-R product.

3.5.1 External Disable

The amplifier can be disabled by applying -48VDC to its disable input pins J4-12 and
J4-13. The disable input requires less than 10mA at 48VDC and will activate for an
input voltage lower than -32VDC, i.e. –72V to –32V.
When the amplifier is disabled, the laser pump in the amplifier is turned off and the EDF
will greatly attenuate all input optical signals between 1500 and 1600nm as they travel
to the unit‘s output.

For 1RU-RxxF only
1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 37 of 85
3.5.2 External Reset
The amplifier micro-controller system can be reset by applying –48 VDC to its reset
input pins J4-10 and J4-11. The reset input requires less than 10mA at –48 VDC and
will activate for input voltage lower than –32 VDC, i.e. –72V to –32V. The reset input
only requires a pulse of more than 0.05sec. Holding the reset input high will halt the
1RU-R unit until the input is released low.
After a reset pulse has been given to the amplifier, the micro-controller system re-
initializes and returns to its nominal setting and operating mode.

4 PRODUCT FIRMWARE
4.1 Firmware Objective
The objective of the firmware is to provide essential functions to control and monitor the
amplifier. Such functions include:
 Control of the pump laser current
 Monitoring of pump and TEC currents and temperatures
 Reporting of alarms and faults
The firmware consists of two interdependent applications; the first one runs on a micro-
controller unit (MCU), and the second one runs on a digital signal processor (DSP).
Essential functions provided by the MCU and the DSP make it possible to control and
monitor the amplifier operational parameters, as well as trigger alarms or faults when
problems are detected.

4.2 MCU States

The MCU takes care of relatively slow tasks, such as the laser diode TEC control and
user interface management.
MCU functions are called from a sequential finite-state automaton described in Figure
23. States used are as follows:

4.5.4 Faults
The faults are different conditions that prevent the amplifier from operating safely. When
such a condition is detected, the amplifier is immediately put in Automatic Laser
Shutdown (ALS). According to the severity of the fault, different actions are taken.

5 COMMUNICATION INTERFACE
It is possible to communicate to the 1RU device via a Serial Interface Port or an
Ethernet Interface port. The two interface ports will be described in the following
sections.

5.1 Serial Interface

Serial communication is used to operate the 1RU-R Telecom unit from a PC-based
HyperTerminal Application or from the 1RU-R Craft Terminal Software.

5.1.1 EDFA Amplifier Side

The 1RU-R Telecom unit serial interface uses RS-232C signal levels.
Electrical connection on the product is through a female DB9 connector (J3). (Refer to
section 12 for details)

5.1.2 Personal Computer Side

The link to a PC is established through a RS-232C DB9 extender cable. The PC serial
port settings should be configured as illustrated:

5.2 HyperTerminal Commands
All commands are to be typed on one line. There can be one or more spaces between
the command and the first argument, and between arguments. A command ends with a
carriage return.
When the User submits a command from the HyperTerminal to the amplifier, the
command gets processed, and then the amplifier returns the related reply to the
HyperTerminal.
If this reply happens to be positive, the expected arguments are returned. However, if
the reply is negative, the only argument returned is a single string containing an error
message. Here are the essential commands:

5.2.1 Essential Commands

5.5 Ethernet Interface (Optional)
Ethernet communication is used to enable remote operation of the 1RU-R Telecom unit
from either a PC-based HyperTerminal Application or 1RU-R Craft Terminal Software.

5.5.1 1RU Device Side

The 1RU-R unit has an Ethernet interface (10BaseT only) that accommodates a remote
user on the same LAN to control and monitor the unit. The physical interface is done
via the RJ45 port J5 on the unit front panel.
The Ethernet module embedded in the 1RU only encapsulates and unwraps the ASCII
proprietary reply/command between the 1RU and the user interface.

5.5.1.1 1RU Default IP Address Configuration.

The 1RU Ethernet port is configured with the following default private IP address and
netmask.
Default IP address: 192.3.1.254

5.5.2 Personal Computer side

Setting up of the Ethernet Port for the 1RU device, can be done via a Telnet console. It
must be noted that in order to connect via a telnet console, the host PC and the 1RU
device must be connected to a common LAN.
If connection to the 1RU device is done directly from the PC a standard Ethernet cross
cable is needed. If the connection between the 1RU device and the PC is done via a
LAN, a standard Ethernet straight through cable is needed.

7 RoHS
7.1 Introduction
The European Union’s (EU) Directive 2002/95/EC restricts the use of certain hazardous
substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) entering the market from July
1, 2006 onwards. The restricted substances and their allowed limits are detailed in the
table below.
Material Limit
Lead (Pb) 0.1% by weight
Mercury (Hg) 0.1% by weight
Hexavalent Chromium 0.1% by weight
Polybrominated Byphenyls (PBB) 0.1% by weight
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) 0.1% by weight
Cadmium (Cd) 0.01% by weight
The Directive also details a series of exemptions, some relating to particular
applications of one of the hazardous substances (e.g. lead in electronic ceramic parts,
lead in optical glass) and others to particular applications of the EEE as a whole (e.g.
lead in solders for telecommunications network infrastructure equipment).
This document details MPB Communications Inc.’s position regarding compliance of its
telecommunications equipment with the RoHS directive.
7.2 Relevant Exemptions Designated in the RoHS Directive
Given the high reliability standards demanded for telecommunications network
equipment and the current status of industry efforts to develop and thoroughly test the
reliability of alternatives to lead/tin solder, MPB Communications Inc. will be exercising
the exemption granted under the RoHS Directive allowing the use of:
lead in solders for telecommunications network infrastructure equipment
The exercise of this application-specific exemption covers the continued use of lead/tin
solder on the various PCBs used in MPBC’s telecommunications equipment.
In addition, MPBC has to date identified two individual components whose continued
use relies on the exercise of the lead-in-solder exemption:
 the 14xx nm single-mode laser diodes used on MPBC’s SLU, PLU circuit
cards.
 the 15xx.xx nm DFB laser diodes used in MPBC’s OTM-16 transponder
In both of these families of laser diodes, lead/tin solder is used to solder the laser diode
chip to the sub mount inside the butterfly package.

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 67 of 85

The Directive also provides for a number of broad-application exemptions (i.e. not
limited to telecommunications equipment). Of these, the exemptions that are (or
maybe) relevant for MPBC’s telecommunications equipment allow the use of:
lead in electronic ceramic parts (e.g. capacitors, integrated circuit
packages, piezoelectronic devices)
lead in optical glasses
cadmium in the plating of electrical contacts
deca brominated diphenyl ether (Deca BDE) used as a flame retardant in
polymers
The internal coupling lens in the 14xx nm single-mode laser diodes mentioned above
contains lead in excess of 0.1% by weight, but this fact does not affect the compliance
status of the laser diodes owing to the lead-in-optical-glass exemption.
The only other components identified to date whose continued use relies on one of the
broad-application exemptions are the optical isolators and circulators used in MPBC’s
EDFA’s, EYDFA’s and all Raman, Super Raman and ROPA pump sources. The
Faraday rotator crystals in these devices contain lead in excess of 0.1% by weight
(0.5%). The manufacturer (Gran Opto, a joint venture of Mitsubishi and Sumitomo
Metals & Mining) of the raw Faraday rotator material used by almost all component
manufacturers has applied to the EU for an explicitly specific exemption and a decision
by the EU is expected in the very near future. However, MPBC feels that these
components are already compliant with the RoHS directive under the lead-in-optical-
glass exemption. The only source found to date of raw material with less than 0.1%
lead (Integrated Photonics Inc.) currently has a very limited customer base, making the
availability of fully qualified components very questionable.
7.3 MPBC Telecommunications Equipment RoHS Compliance
Position and Policy
MPBC’s telecommunications products delivered after June 30, 2006 under ‘new
product’ customer orders will be compliant with the RoHS Directive with the exercising
of the lead-in-solder exemption for telecommunications equipment and one or more of
the above-mentioned broad-application exemptions. The designation ‘new product’
customer orders refers to all equipment orders except orders for replacement parts for
systems delivered prior to July 1, 2006, since the latter are exempted under the RoHS
Directive.
MPBC has been and continues to be (in the case of any new components considered
for inclusion in its products) very diligent in obtaining materials and component RoHS
compliance declarations from all suppliers. These declarations are being kept on file in
a form suitable for audit.
MPBC has also instituted a strict quarantine/segregation procedure with regard to
existing inventory of non-RoHS-compliant materials, components and finished goods to
ensure that no such items can make their way into ‘new product’ deliveries after July 1,
2006.

1RU-R Series User Manual DOC-02642 Rev.11 Page 68 of 85

It shall be MPBC’s goal to continue to reduce the number of components whose use
relies on these exemptions as soon as substitute components with proven reliability
become available.
7.4 China

products at their end of life shall be returned to MPBC as per standard
Return Material Authorization (RMA) process. The RMA shall specify that
the product be returned for end of life reason.

13 APPENDIX IV: VISUAL INDICATION
For the telecom application, the 1RU-R has at least three (3) visual indications. These
indicators are:
 POWER (LED green) – The LED is turned ON when the +5V of the power supply is
on. The LED is turned OFF when the power supply is off.
 Laser On (LED green) – The LED is turned ON when the unit has its laser on. The
LED is turned OFF after the laser is shutdown.
 Fault (LED red) – The LED is turned ON during HW/SW failure, and in case of an
optical path failure (based on loss of output). The LED is turned OFF if all faults are
cleared.

For the 1RU-RxxF models, there is a fourth visual indicator:

 Loss of Signal (LED yellow) – The LED is turned ON when the optical input power is
below the signal loss threshold. The LED is turned OFF after the optical input power
is above the signal detect threshold.
