APEX PREDATORS
HOW TO PLAY
This rule sheet contains additional rules for Aquamarine Map 2
- Apex Predators. Please see the Map 1 rules for full instruction
on how to play Aquamarine. If you haven’t played Aquamarine
before, we recommend you start with Map 1 before playing
this map.
CAVES
In some parts of the map are dark caves, shown by shaded
water spaces. On your turn, you can draw a shape that
encloses one or more cave spaces only if:
1. If it is Day; or
2. You spend an available Torch
You start the game with 3 Torches (and can earn an extra
Torch from Research see below), and when you use one, cross
it off. If it is Night and you have no remaining torches, you
cannot draw a shape that encloses any cave spaces.
RESEARCH
In this map, you have entered more dangerous waters in order
to study the habits of some apex predators, namely sharks and
giant squid. Near these creatures you will find research icons.
Each research icon enclosed lets you cross off one space on a
research track. There are four separate research tracks, and for
each track its spaces must be crossed off in order from left to
right.
you can choose to cross off several spaces on the same track,
or cross off spaces on different tracks.
Colossal Squid cover multiple spaces on the map (7, 8 or 11
spaces). If you manage to enclose all spaces of a squid over
multiple turns, you gain 10 points per squid at the end of the
game.
Whenever you cross off a space on a research track with an
icon, you immediately get the corresponding bonus:
Each Shark you have enclosed loses you 3 points at the end of
- Bubbles: You don’t spend any air this turn, exactly the the game. You only suffer this penalty once per Shark,
same as if you had enclosed bubbles in a shape regardless of whether you discovered 1 or 2 of its spaces.
- Bonus Torch: Circle the corresponding place in the
torch track
- Bonus move: Make an additional move equal to the
number in the square
Banner fish score exactly the same as Butterfly fish in Map 1.
If you gain a bonus move, you immediately draw another
Enclosing a shoal of 1/2/3/4/5 fish in a single shape earns you
shape of size equal to the number in the box (either 3 or 5), of
1/3/6/10/15 points.

STINGRAYS and CUTTLEFISH Score 5 points for each of
these two animals you discovered, as long as it was at the
right time (Day for Stingrays, Night for Cuttlefish).
At the end of the game, you earn 1 point for each space you
have crossed off on any research track. Additionally, if you
cross off the last space on any track, you gain a bonus number SHARKS Lose 3 points for each Shark you enclose.

scores 1/3/6/10/15 points if it enclosed 1/2/3/4/5 Banner
Fish.

FLAGS Players score the written points under the flag if they
enclosed it. However, players can only gain the points from a
maximum of one flag for each dive. If they enclosed more, they
only score the flag with the highest value.

BEACONS Players score 15 points for each pair of Beacons

they enclosed, as long as within each pair one Beacon was
enclosed during the Day, and one was enclosed during the
Night.
